HAWTHORN'S Cyril Rioli has admitted he is still suffering the effects of a groin injury that plagued his summer.

Despite starring in the club's past two matches against the Western Bulldogs and Geelong, Rioli is still being nursed along from the groin injury that he says is similar to osteitis pubis.

"It was something along the lines of that (OP)," he said.

"The only solid hit-out I will get is the games now. The week’s pretty light for me. I'm getting a lot of physio and extra rubs. Recovery during the week and a big hit-out during the game."

LIFE as an AFL footballer in Melbourne has often been likened to a fishbowl existence.

Especially so for Cyril Rioli, one of the game's most exciting young talents, who admits he is still adjusting to being recognised by complete strangers.

Rioli's freakish talents and a long-running joke on The Footy Show have combined to boost his public profile in just a short period since making his debut in 2008.

"I get it a bit here and there. I get the odd 'delicious' when I'm out from people on the street. I get recognised a lot more now. The boys at the club are pretty cool about it though," Rioli said.

Cyril showed glimspes of electricity without actually oozing any of his signature class on Sat'd night.
Is the groin complaint holding him back? Does he need a rest?
I did notice that he lost his footing a number of times ealry in the game, and he didn't look like the Cyril that we know and love.

I wouldn't be surprised if we balance his output by giving him a rest this weekend.

Cyril looks like he's suffering from the limited preseason. He's still able to out manoeuvre his opponents at times, but he's clearly not running at 100%.

Beware if Cyril gets on a Rioli

Hawk coach Alastair Clarkson says we haven't seen the best of Cyril Rioli. Picture: Michael Dodge Source: Herald Sun

ALASTAIR Clarkson says Cyril Rioli does not yet understand just how much influence he can exert on a football game.

"He's such a humble kid, he could really cause some pain for an opposition down the track," the Hawthorn coach said yesterday.
On the strength of what Rioli produced against Adelaide in Launceston last weekend, God help teams that cross Hawthorn's path when the youngster develops that self-belief.

LUKE HODGE and Cyril Rioli led Hawthorn to a 47-point win against Adelaide as the 2008 premiers continued showing commendable backbone for their fifth victory in a row.

Hawthorn kicked six goals to two in the last term. Hodge kicked three goals and had 32 possessions to be best afield; Rioli was not far behind him with 27 touches, three goals and nine tackles.

Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead also kicked three goals apiece for the Hawks.

Adelaide key forward Kurt Tippett kicked four goals but had a couple of bad misses when the Crows were still in the game, while David Mackay was their best.

Rioli and Hodge put exclamation marks on the win with two brilliant pieces of play early in the last quarter.

Rioli set up Brent Guerra's goal with a strong tackle and then a baulk before he passed into attack.

EVER-IMPROVING Hawthorn midfielder-forward Cyril Rioli says yesterday's dominant last-quarter performance against Adelaide was arguably the team's best since its 2008 premiership win.

Rioli kicked one of the six goals, and created another, that lifted the Hawks to their fifth consecutive victory and condemned the Crows to their ninth loss of the season.

When asked about the comparison to the premiership win, Rioli replied: ''Oh yeah, for sure. We played Carlton [in round nine] and played pretty well there, but today I thought we finished well - credit to the boys.''

As well as kicking an equal team-high three goals, Rioli also managed to snare 27 possessions - 10 of which were contested - in a best-on-ground performance.

''It was good to get back into form and kick a couple of goals. The team are up and about, on a roll. It was a good game today but we've still got a long way to go,'' he said. ''It was good to get up the ground. I've been playing forward but struggling a bit so it was good get up the ground. I had a lot of fun today.

''I was sort of all over the place, on the wing and a little bit of midfield and rested up forward. I was popping around everywhere.''

Freedom factor fires up Rioli

Cyril Rioli was back to his best against Adelaide
A RUN of five consecutive wins has handed Hawthorn a spot in the top eight that looked rather unlikely just weeks ago.

Part of the resurgence of the 2008 premiers has been the return to form of a number of their previously misfiring stars.

Chief among these during the Hawks’ 47-point win over Adelaide at Launceston’s Aurora Stadium on Saturday was Cyril Rioli, the fleet-footed forward leaving scorch marks across the Tasmanian turf on his way to three goals and a genuine all-round performance.

A great read from Emma Quayle
http://www.smh.com.au/afl/afl-news/rioli-simply-sizzles-20100703-zv0t.html
CYRIL Rioli keeps things simple when he heads into the centre square. This is how he describes the sort of lunging tap-ons, mid-pack flicks, hard-to-slip tackles, side steps and sprints that helped his Hawthorn team overcome the Western Bulldogs late on Friday might. "I just kind of hunt the ball," said Rioli, "I try and cause a bit of chaos in there."

It is what he has become known for in his two-and-a-half senior seasons. But at the start of this year, stricken by groin problems, Rioli was thinking a little more about things. He couldn't train as often as he wanted; he could hardly train at all. He couldn't slip by opponents as smoothly as he had done, and he couldn't build up much speed.

WHEN people talk about modern football's complete package, don't presume they're talking about Gary Ablett.

AFTER more than 40 years in the AFL as a player, coach or commentator, Leigh Matthews is what the courts would call an expert witness.

It's that background that makes his assessment of Cyril Rioli this week so profound.

"He's an elite ball-winner, an elite user of the ball, elite for defensive pressure," Matthews said of the Hawthorn youngster.

"To be elite in the three basic categories of footy is a very, very rare thing. I can't think of another name that's been elite in all three."

ADAM Goodes passionately argued the case recently against the stereotype of indigenous players who thrive simply on their God-given talents, asserting their work ethic was grossly underplayed.

Cyril Rioli's admirers would argue he does things on the football field that white men couldn't master no matter how many hours, weeks, months and years they practised.

Rioli didn't see the Goodes article, but does see himself basically an an instinctive player.

As humble as he is, he admits he can surprise even himself on the field at times.

"Watching vision sometimes, seeing some of the things that happen, I kinda shock myself. I think it's just instinct for me," he says.

HAWTHORN will consider approaching the AFL about the severity of interchange penalties after defender Grant Birchall was last night confirmed as the culprit of a controversial infringement that cost his team victory against St Kilda on Friday night.

As there was no clear footage of the incident, an AFL spokesman confirmed Birchall had crossed the interchange line early as teammate Cyril Rioli lined up for goal with two minutes remaining at Etihad Stadium.

Rioli kicked the goal, handing the Hawks what would have been a 13-point lead, but the score did not count.

Not a lot about Cyril here, but a good listen about the state of the Etihad surface.

When Cyril Rioli can't keep his feet, then you know there's a problem with the surface at Etihad Stadium, says WAYNE CAREY in his latest exclusive BPL podcast.

Junior Boy is the story of the round after seeing red with some off the ball treatment by his Port opponent.

His outburst have left AFL followers wondering what exactly made him so irate, as it's not in his nature to be so outwardly aggressive.

The Club have since rejected any thought that Cyril's outburst was in retaliation of any racial comments.

HAWTHORN yesterday dismissed racial vilification as the catalyst for indigenous star Cyril Rioli losing his cool against Port Adelaide on Saturday.

Rioli appeared to lose the plot late in the third quarter in an off-the-ball incident involving Port Adelaide's Nick Salter, which sparked a melee.

The AFL's match review panel will today view a series of wild punches thrown, particularly by Rioli, who has a clean tribunal record and is such a valuable player to the Hawks.

Hawthorn general manager of football operations Mark Evans said yesterday he was at a loss to explain Rioli's reactions.

When asked if Rioli had reacted to a racial taunt, Evans said: "He's saying he wasn't, but it was out of character for him because he's normally a pretty controlled person.

"I asked him on the plane home whether anyone said anything, and he said 'no'."

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...striking-misses-two-games-20100803-115ff.html
CYRIL Rioli has vowed to keep his frustrations in check after his bid to overturn a suspension failed at the AFL tribunal last night.

Rioli will miss two crucial weeks in Hawthorn's quest for the finals - Saturday's game against Sydney at the SCG and round 20 against Melbourne - after he was found guilty of attempting to strike Port Adelaide's Nick Salter during a third-quarter melee at AAMI Stadium last weekend.

"I take full responsibility for my actions and the consequences are I'll be out for two weeks,'' Rioli said after the decision. ''I'll accept that.''

While there has been speculation about what set Rioli off, Hawthorn denied that any racial slur was uttered. Rioli's explanation was simple: ''I just let my frustrations get the better of me. It won't happen again.''

What is cyril's contract status? Is he locked away from Sheedy?

Nope. He is out of contract at the end of 2012, and as the Giants get 2 years to sign up uncontracted players (2011-12) he's theirs for the taking if they can get him. Big "if" IMO. Cyril loves Hawthorn...But crazier things have happened and their is no way known we could offer him what Sheeds could dollar-wise.

Today lost his uncle.....:(
Im sure im not out of line when i say .....Cyril, i would like to extend to you the condolences from ALL at BF......."OUR THOUGHTS AND SUPPORT ARE WITH YOU "......IT WILL BE A TOUGH TIME FOR SOMENOE SO YOUNG..:(
