Traded 35. Jarrad Jansen (2014-2015)

Great to read your write ups fellow Cat fans.

I can never really judge talent well early on and wait until I see a fir bit of a player - but I know some of you posters have some good cred with such things.

I was disappointed not to get Dunstan (just from the write ups pre-draft) but it sounds like he will be our Dunstan.

I think some forget how strong and big our midfield was and how that translated into effectiveness. Ling, Corey, Bartel, Kelly and Ottens made for a big midfield. Even Chappy and Ablett were strong. We have missed this aspect for a while now.

Perhaps Simpson, Selwood, Kelly, SJ, Caddy and GHS will be big enough, and skilled enough, to bring back some midfield dominance we used to have in spades.

If we can get Jansen to become a decent big bodied mid with a touch of speed and loves to tackle - he will be a great replacement for Kelly going forward. Then we just need Lang to come good as SJ's replacement in the midfield in the next 2 seasons.

Funny you should say that Jon Douglas . Id say most have a very positive view of what we saw. Early days of course but I wonder if any of us would swap him right now for Cripps or Dunstan. I like Dunstan and Robertson but atm Im very happy with our pick. It even tickles my fancy a bit that we may just end up with a very good kid yet again with a late pick from a low profile draft aspirant.

I think the kid will be a gun in time. I'm very excited about this young West Aussie prospect.

SC, I saw the other day Lukey Dunstan racked up 22 possessions in the badly beaten St Kilda team, with the reports and injuries Dunstan is just about a lock to play rd 1. Coach Richardson loves him like a son.
But we've got Lang, after my initial disappointment the little I've heard and seen is that he'll be worth waiting for. I don't expect him to jump straight into seniors like Dunstan will, there's no need at our club, same goes for Jansen, but I'm sure Scottie was grinning.

Amazing JD (Dunstan), just posted and you'd trumped me I see! I would have been wrapped, but funny I'm sort of confident about Darcy L, looks to be genuinely tough like the skip.

The thing is that Jansen was a second round pick but Cripps and Dunstan I think were first round picks - well higher than Jansen anyway.

If I remember correctly Cripps was picked well before our first round pick (Lang pick 17/18 ?) and Dunstan a bit higher and we preferred Lang. But Jansen was a later pick than all 3 players mentioned.

So if Jansen is as good as Cripps and Dunstan he has been an excellent pick.

History seems to show that is where our recruiters do their best work - later picks - rounds 2 and 3 picks.

Sure we have had a fair share of first round picks do well - Mackie, Bartel, Selwood, Taylor and Corey the picks that bought us Chappy, Enright, SJ, Egan, Duncan, Motlop, Lonergan, Bundy, Guthrie, Stokes, etc - were exceptional selections.

We still have a few that might make it on the list that were first round picks - Brown, Thurlow, Lang and Smedts. Varcoe, and Caddy are somewhere between making it and not making it. Maybe this year they will become others that have entered the making it as a first round pick - and acknowledged by a majority of posters on this Board as so.

As for round 2 and lower picks that still may become good picks that we seem to specialise in are Simpson, GHS and Murdoch.

THunt is another in-betweener and has this season to see if he too can join the second plus rounders to become another successful pick.

Jansen I hope will become one of these second round picks that come good very soon. It sounds from the posts here he has a good chance to in the next season or two.

One of my mates is good friends with Jarrad, and I got him to ask JJ about his weight when he came back to Perth to visit his family this week. Jansen said that he's up to 97 kg!!!!!

What id really like to know is .. has he improved his tank. His size looks fine , strength will improve over seasons , skill look good enough just game awareness and run longevity will hold him back. Get 5 to 10 VFL games done and I think he may be pushing for a Sub position

I'd say that's what they'd be focusing on Turbo, what's pleasing is his solid contribution in a depleted team against a very strong Richmond last week.
Would've learned a lot last week,......... I think we might have one in Jansen.
Gee!.. he's a unit too.

I say this with trepidation , because I don't wan't this to be post that sets you on a certain path. Perhaps , just perhaps we may end up in front from our 3 draft picks as a package. I doubt we would have picked JJ if we had of picked up Dunstan. All three looks like they will offer something , and in fact something different.
I hope your right , that he learned a heap etc. When I've watched JJ , one can see more the player he may be down the track with his little don't argues and strong take always. Very much in consideration a second 1/2 of the season debut

If the lad grows anymore, he could be an answer for CHF...193cm and 97kgs, only 19. Moves well. Food for thought.

Get your drift on the selections TC, I'm not anti-Lang but I'm guessing you realise that, the way these two are going it is a very good sign we'll have good future quality from this draft, after my initial disappointment.
He gives off the little palms, does he!...when you're that big you can get away with that stuff. :thumbsu:

As much as I'd like to see him rewarded by a senior appearance, I'm just content atm from what I'm reading regards Jared and also Darcy, there is no rush and it's happening quick enough anyway.

I was think that he could possibly be the third tall position that I was hoping Menzel and then Kersten would fill.

If he builds a midfield tank he's got both options, could and would become a very valuable asset in time, like another one of him next draft.

Yep, would like to see some strong bodied kids come through in the next draft regardless of the position that they play.

Go Catters

Until I see more of JJ , I'm not convinced he would be a legit forward. Its more difficult than just having the shape and size. I suspect your talking the Petracca kid. At this stage id say he would be a good addition and fit our needs, we lack a creative forward of his size. I see Bundys brother is a goal kicker s well.

Bundy's brother missed out in the last draft- can you see him getting picked up at the end of this year, TC? I'm a big fan of getting brothers to the club (if we are talking late picks).

I don't want him changed, hopefully they won't stuff him up. A very big bodied mid isn't unusual in AFL ranks any more, in fact some teams are further into the concept than we are for sure.
I'd like another future big bodied mid next draft to go with JJ, will go well to repair the loss of Ling, Corey, Rooke and Bartell in the coming years.

If Petracca is there you would have to take him I'd suspect, but we need a big forward like Wright.

I am not sure he needs to be a "forward". It seems that he is a big mid who can play forward.
And looking at the video footage of him it is clear that he can take a contested mark and can kick goals. All the ingredients are there for him to be a versatile mid/forward given time.

If he keeps his development on track and his form stays about the same or even improves, what's the chance they might fit him into the subs vest in a home game around mid season?
I haven't seen him, just up to date on game reports and a few of his stats.

I'd like to see that! :) He went OK in the preseason games- then was injured, wasn't he?

Yeah but he's obviously over that now and putting in creditable performances for a first year pick, I think out of the 2013 group he's the one most likely for a debut.
After a restricted start Lang is starting to go about it nicely as well, so they say.

Is your friend an East Perth boy, or from the Bullcreek-Leeming area, serial_thrilla?
Bull Creek-Leeming. He's good mates with Jarrad's older brother, Scott.
Funny story about JJ: he eats 18 Weet-Bix each morning!! Sounds like he's eating his host family out of house and home. Hehehe. :)

Hahaha! JJ played for the Bulls team, while my son played in the Sharks team in the same age group - that's why I asked if your mate knew JJ (thought he might have been a teammate)

I think Jansen would be suited most to a HBF. Good overhead, clean on the ground, ability to beat an opponent 1 on 1 and I note JJ played KPD as a junior before switching to mid.

I don't think we have enough quality half back flankers coming through now that it seems Guthrie will be a full time mid.

We have thurlow, and maybe smedts and hunt. Only the former I'm sure will make it. Hunt is more a bit player and who knows what smedts will accomplish.

We have had great half back flankers in our period of dominance which has proved to be pivotal in our game plan.

On the other hand we have selwood Duncan Guthrie caddy motlop HS Lang christensen coming through/young mids.

Develop JJ along with thurlow as our first choice half back flankers.
