Player Watch Sam Grimley (2009-15)

Whilst I don't have stats it seems Sam has progressed through the Development Squad this year to the main Box Hill team.

Appreciate their list has a few injuries but he has bobbed up and kicked a few goals in the past weeks and shown some glimpses of talent that are keeping the Box Hill regulars intrigued.

Still a lot of development required but it is nice to read that he is making the transition to a tougher level.

According to the AFL website:

Rookie Will Langford and uncapped ruckman Sam Grimley were both hurt playing for Box Hill on Saturday.

Langford has had surgery to repair a fractured collarbone, and will be fit for the start of pre-season training.

Grimley has a slight fracture in his hand, and is waiting on advice from a specialist as to how it should be treated.

Sadly, it looks like Sam's year may also be over.

More Development Awaits

The title probably says it all. Sam started the year playing in both of Hawthorn's opening NAB Cup games in Perth. Against WCE he had 1 kick, 2 handballs and 2 hit outs and against Freo, 1 kick, 2 hitouts and 1 tackle. He took no further part in the pre-season competition and ended up at Box Hill, where he started in the development squad before progressing to the seniors, where he showed some promise.

For a player of his height he has incredible athleticism, which keeps the Box Hill regulars excited. He has however come from a basketball background and with a pretty lean frame, has a lot more work ahead of him to reach AFL standard, whether as a ruckman or a tall utility.

It will be interesting to follow his progress against Nathan Vardy, who was selected a few spots later in the same draft by Geelong. Whilst Vardy has shown more to date and was obviously more developed and AFL ready when drafted, it seems that many of the Hawks faithful are quietly confident about Sam's raw, but freakish talents.

Alrighty then, I have been given the honour of reporting on future champion Sam Grimley. That's him intimidating Josh Gibson during the recent intra club hitout down in Launceston. Apparently just after this photo was taken he grabs Gibbo and snaps him like a twig.

Since being a suprise 3rd round selection in the 09 draft Sam has made quiet but steady progress from the development sqaud, cracking a few Box Hill senior runs. He has impressed many with his athletic ability as a big man, covering the ground and displaying agility not usually associated with a lad his size. He has managed to put on a little beef since arriving at Waverly going from 80kg to be now listed at 86kg (may have got prematurely excited there, had that problem since I was a young bloke).

Sam's drafting had a little twist as apparently the only club that had spoken to him was Collingwood. So when we drafted him apparently he was suprised and Collingwood dissapointed. Ahhh, lovely.
Having just turned 21 Sam is still in the dawn of his career as a ruckman/kpp. But 2012 may be his year to crack a run.

Sam get's his first real chance to show us how much he has improved this friday. SO let's get behind Sam and wish him all the best for 2012.

Judging by that photo, he's been doing some serious bench press. His hips and legs still look a little on the small size for a ruckman but I've always thought of him as a key position player anyway..
He's gained 11kg since this time last year..

Sam Grimley v Israel Falou

Whilst Sam may have been a little overshadowed by the Issy show he still managed a run in the ruck. Ruckwork is average at best and many believe his potential will be as a kpp. Which with the current rules means he porbably is still a show to be a good 2nd ruck. We need to see more of this lad.

Sam's stats
1 kick, 3 handballs, 2 marks, 4 hitouts

Hopefully Sam will get another run against the Dee's this week.

Clarko said ruckman - 199cm is a Ruckman, we need a ruckman and he was drafted as a Ruckman.

Grimley and/or Lowden need to establish themselves as the clear 1st Ruck at Box Hill in 2012. Pattisson and McCauley are basically back ups for Hawks.

His marking was pretty good against GWS. Found good position in a contest and backed himself to take the mark. Almost had a shot on goal but Hale was in front of him. If he can have a good year for Box Hill he may be given a chance later in the year if we decide to rest Hale or Bailey. I think he is a year away but I was happy with the limited chances he had

Just going over Sam's stats and so far 2 games for 3 goals and taking a few marks.
Had 16 hitouts v Sandy.

Has not been named in the best for either game v Sandy or Werribee. With sunny weather predicted for this sunday, let's hope Sam has a day out. Probably wont be doing a lot of ruckwork due to Pattinson and Lowden.

From all reports Sam had a quiet day against the Borough. Limited possies and a goal which was handed to him on a platter. Here's hoping for a better run next week Sam plays' Collingwood.

Am worried about him.

Always thought he was a Pelchen 'could be anything pick' and the game has changed so much since he was drafted. Vardy has shown buckets load more at every level including AFL.

He's not close to be a KPP, even though there is some love for him as a key defender. Really? Hi Mr Reiwoldt, Hawkins, Cloke, Walker, Reid, Petrie, Kennedy... here's your opponent. WTF?

He's also miles off being a ruckman.

It's not courageous, but i'll make the call now. He won't make it and with a super draft coming up, should be delisted from the senior list and at best rookied.

Pelchen got bullied by the Pies into thinking this kid would be a star. Thank god he's gone.

We didn't think Joey Kennedy would make it but we though Jarryd Morton, Steve Green and Grimley would?....

Hard to disagree with any of this

He's out of form because he is being played out of position week in, week out.

Box Hill desperatly lack a KPF since the departure of Lisle. The fact that we have a surplus of ruckmen down there in Lowden, McCauley, Pattinson means that one of them has to play KPF. Unfortunately for Grimley, he's the most likley to show something there.

Calls for him to be delisted are very premature.

With the talk that Collingwood were really keen to take him, it seems like they achieved what they were after in the year before by taking Lachlan Keeffe in the rookie draft. 200cm defender who I think has come on really nicely. Would love grimly to become type of that player

For the fourth year in a row he's playing in the development squad again isn't he?

He was drafted in Nov 2009 so it's actually his 3rd season.

Playing a tweener type role which is confusing for us watchers, so its hard to work out his role. Out of contract at the end of 2013.

My bad.

Clarkson is on record as saying he is a ruckman and not a KPP.

It's a long season so Sam has time to find form. I am sure he knows where he sits as far as staying on the main list. Clubs never make a secret of where you sit in the pecking order.

CLA you make a good point as Sam has had little impact over the last few weeks.
Has shown glimpses, needs to dominate the VFL seconds. Into it SAM!

I'd just put him in the seniors at FF. He can take an overhead mark and can provide defensive pressure. If he kicks 1 or 2 goals a game he's doing his job.
