A presence I’ve not felt since . . .

Max_Bailey.jpg

I sense something. A presence I’ve not felt since . . . What am I talking about? Oh right, Max Bailey.

My opening salvo of silliness relates not to a sense of the Force, but rather of a presence in the ruck. It’s been a while since Hawthorn had a strong figure in the hitouts duel who could do something more than block his opponent’s parries. Can Max Bailey be that figure?

It’s possible he already is.

Max Bailey is tall timber, standing at 206cm and 101kg. Despite his impressive frame, he is a renowned runner at the club, and would run a 3km time trial faster than dashing half-back Grant Birchall. Clever tapouts, contested marks and 1%ers are also a big feature of his game. Unfortunately setbacks with knee injuries have curtailed his football career to an extent, though he has returned in impressive form thus far.

In 2011, Big Max re-entered the arena along with a host of inexperienced Hawks. Ultimately it was these younger or less tried players who carried the team deep into September, and Bailey was as responsible as any of them.

Averaging 20+ hitouts a game was a more than solid return from the big man, particularly when Hawthorn played a high possession game that didn’t see a lot of stoppages. As his confidence grew, he started to win more possessions, take contested marks, and kick some goals too. In fact, all 3 of his career goals have come in his last 6 games. Though he’s a 24 year old ruckman, Bailey is on a steep learning curve.

Later in the year Bailey was reported to have been working on increasing his lateral mobility by playing basketball as part of his training. This seemed to have paid dividends particularly against the Western Bulldogs where he amassed 20 disposals.

The primary concern or question mark on Bailey remains his ability to avoid knee ligament damage. Though the club offered him a 2 year contract, Bailey insisted on a one year deal in order to better focus on performing again in 2012.

Fingers crossed for Big Max.

After participating in the first three rounds of the NAB Cup, Bails pulled up sore after the NAB R3 clash against Melbourne.

His wrist injury from last year has flared up, and he's had to go into surgery to have the screw that was inserted at the end of last season replaced by an even larger version. This is expected to put him out until Round 6 or so of the regular season.

"He's had a previous fracture in that wrist, and he's just re-aggravated that fracture," Clarkson told Ten News on Wednesday night. "They'll ascertain the severity of the injury when they get in there, but we're not expecting him to be playing before round six or seven.

Now officially on the LTI, which means he's at least 8 weeks away from returning. :(

Mark Evans on HFC website said:
"After the injury was first detected in the pre-season competition, we were keen to see how Max went with it and we thought that a few months’ rehabilitation was standard for this type of injury,"

“Placing him on the long-term injury list now means he should return a little after that three month mark.”

It was another frustrating season for Max Bailey, managing just two matches at senior level as he continued to join a group he’s all too familiar with - the rehab group. When reflecting upon his 2012 season, however, it was a disappointing year for a player who managed 16 matches in 2011 and, showing signs of leaving the injury curse behind him. It wasn’t to be, however, but with 24 matches under his belt and at 26 years of age, Bailey still has time to make an impact for the Hawks.

[General Manager - Football Operations, Mark] Evans is confident in Bailey’s ability to reclaim the number one ruck spot, a position teammates David Hale and Jarryd Roughead made their own in the absence of Bailey this season. He also believes the changes to the ruck rules, where ruckmen can’t wrestle prior to the bounce of the ball could favour Bailey’s playing style.

“He has been for a long time one of the most outstanding contributors to the Club,” he said. “He has been recognised in the past as Best Clubman and his attitude towards himself and his teammates and his club has been absolutely outstanding. He has always got a smile on his face and always gives it his very best.”

3 goals on the weekend against North, pretty much doubling his career tally. Apparently only got about the same number of hitouts, but nice to see some hard running into the forward line to get involved, as most of these three were from general play.

Subbed off in the end, making it the third game this year (basically every non-injury forced sub) where this has happened.

Congrats big fella.

The Hawks expect Bailey, who has had three knee reconstructions, to play next season, but admit it is not a certainty he will be a part of plans for back-to-back flags. He is off contract and the club admits he was a week-to-week proposition during the season because of his history of injuries. He could have knee scans as early as this week.

Love Big Max so much that when I got a pup a couple of years ago, I called him Bailey. Now that pup, being a cross between a Dalmatian and a Great Dane has grown into a giant, so a change to Big Boy will be quite appropriate. Wishing you all the best Max, and maybe one day we'll see you back with the Hawks if another role.

Now Richmond development coach, and hasn't ruled out playing a cheeky game or two under former teammate Tim Clarke.

HAWTHORN premiership player Max Bailey has not ruled out playing some games next season for Richmond's new stand-alone VFL side. Bailey, who was dogged with knee injuries at the Hawks, announced his retirement soon after the Grand Final victory against Fremantle and signed with the Tigers as a development coach.
After having three knee reconstructions, Bailey indicated at Richmond's Tommy Hafey Club function this week he could play some games this season. But it would depend on whether the 27-year-old's troublesome knees could withstand the rigours of the game.
