Past Player - Alex Spina

You might want to check with his mum who works at the local council. Not happy at all.
And you might want to learn the difference between a gag about "playing for the enemy" versus real feelings about her son realising his lifelong dream.

There is something about this kid, I feel that he will go down as a hall of famer. Based off of absolutely nothing except my gut feel!

I feel the exact opposite. Can't see him even playing a single game. Nor will Kelly.
Cameron? Yes.
Battersby? Possibly a few. The other two? No chance.

Just my Gut feel.
Or the Chinese I had last night. Hard to tell the difference.

Draftees in Focus: Alex Spina

by Paige Cardona · August 2, 2013

Draft Range: 20-30

One of the most hyped up draft prospects ahead of the National Championships

Strengths

Damaging player, neat skill set, good composure and calm under pressure, good decision maker, elite kick rating, and nous around goals is exceptional, very good overhead and at ground level, rarely misses a target, has plenty of upside in his development and has the makings to become a good midfielder at AFL level if he’s at the right club.
Weaknesses

Didn’t overly impress (for mine) at the championships (was a bit hot and cold) but has been very good at SANFL level for North Adelaide. Doesn’t win a truck load of the ball, but his 15-20 disposals a game are always of high quality. Spina will probably become a second round pick, as he was a little inconsistent through the championships and needs to develop his tank. Would love to see other areas of Spina’s game go to the next level, especially in his tackling pressure, and being able to impact the scoreboard each game as a forward of his capabilities is a must.

Alex Spina could be an AFL draft steal

The cleanness of his football and his goal sense also seem to scream AFL, but Spina was consistent rather than outstanding this year meaning he could slip lower than predicted heading into the year.
If he does tumble outside the top 50 on draft day, the pacy goalsneak may one day be looked back on as a steal.
Playing the notoriously fickle role of a small forward and pinch-hitting in the midfield through the under-18 championship, Spina consistently showed he can find the football, and kick goals.

Alex Spina
Club: North Adelaide
D.O.B.: 27.6.1995
Height: 181cm
Weight: 75kg
Position: Medium Forward/Midfielder
Plays Like: Angus Monfries
An ultra-clean and exciting half forward, Spina is often a link player used between midfield and forward and possess speed, agility and goal kicking nous in spades. Spina is a vision specialist, and can often weigh up situations both in traffic and in space to make the best decision, and his clean disposal means that he is always reliable with ball in hand. What I love about Spina, is that he offers x-factor, and is one of the more reliable shots on goal in this year’s draft crop. Reminds me a lot of Sam Mayes in 2012 as a draftee, and will graduate to becoming a full-time midfield in years to come. Could also be utilized off half back, given his clean marking and kicking abilities and how he competes at ground level, there is plenty of upside with Spina despite his inconsistencies – the Crows have gotten “the bash brothers” in Knight and Spina in this draft – the pair are all class.

Was flicking through the 2013 AFL Prospectus (Championship Data put this out at the start of every year). They do a list of the top 25 prospects for the next draft and I was kinda surprised to see Alex Spina's name on the list. I know a lot can happen in 12 months, but it's interested to see that he was ranked pretty highly going into the 2013 season.

Yeah Spina was in the AIS squad this year which means at the start of the year he was considered in the best 30 players.

He had a good underage year last season and was expected to have a really good season this year.

For him not to get picked in the ND, he must have really fallen away if its true he was ranked in top 30. Well hes been given a slim chance to prove himself he better take it.
