If you consider a 7,827 member difference similar, then yes.
It's not as large as you make out, especially considering the relevant success recently.

hawthorn are only up there because of their Golden run. as its said "all good things eventuraly come to an end" so when they slide down the ladder, their fans will drop off, similar to the st kilda

Let's just stick to the one account, thanks.

One team has been a premiership contender the other also fans. Reverse the two sides ladder positions and hawthorn would be on a par with st Kilda crowd wise

This is a fair point. Much better to look over the last decade than the last group of matches. This would help iron out inconsistencies like comparing Etihad attendances to MCG attendances as well. Or at least balance everything out a little better to give you a more balanced insight.

I also just want to make a general point, that Carlton have had a rubbish fixture this year, playing 5 dead time games (Sunday night or twilight); compared, for example, to Hawthorn's one. Every game we've played against non-Vic teams bar GWS has been in the twilight slot or Sunday night slot.

Elimination final...Tigers well out numbered Carlton and have more members.

This is such a fallacy. Elimination final - Tigers were louder x 5. Led many to mistake their numbers for being x 5.

As noted earlier on in this thread, Carlton made a million more from their membership. In AFL, membership numbers aren't all they're cracked up to be.

Hence when St Kilda finished 1st and 3rd (after home and away) and Hawthorn 9th and 7th in 2009 and 2010 the Saints drew 767209 and 831799 and while the Hawks drew 892017 and 922136.

So despite playing 4 games in Tasmania (the Saints played 11 games in Melbourne at this point) Hawthorn outdrew them by more than 100,000 per season across both seasons despite the Saints making back to back GF's

In fact in 2008 and 2011 - when the Hawks finished 2nd and 3rd and the Saints 4th and 5th the Hawks drew 910679 and 864164 and 791834 and 781824

Social media is usually a pretty far indicator of club size and the Hawks are comfortably within the top 5 Victorian clubs (and perhaps 4th according to some indicators)

Some posters post a lot of rubbish on these boards...

When you consider that the Hawks now play 4 games in Launceston (since 2007) and 2 games since 2002 this herein highlights the growth. In 1970 the Hawks were probably 8th or 9th amongst the 12 original Victorian clubs. Today they sit amongst the top 5 clubs

That's a pretty big movement but it also highlights how difficult it is to move up the food chain despite all the Hawks recent success and Tigers comparative lack of success.

Mind comparing your 2004 crowds?

While I agree with a lot of what is said here, social media is a fair indicator of supporter size in a specified demographic. The number of people in the community in the say 15-29 age range who a) use facebook/twitter b) like/follow their footy team is likely to be much higher than in say the 45-60 range. These numbers would naturally be skewed towards a) those with big traditional supporter bases and b) those with recently successful periods (everyone loves a winner)

So we just ignore reality and base it on "some time in the future when things change"?

At which point, your argument will apply in reverse, as is the current situation.

Then again, maybe some of the so called 'big clubs' golden runs as you call it ended long ago, 1980, 1995, 2000, all currently non-competitive on the field and in absolute shambles off it.

Put us wherever you want in your fantasy ladder, we both know you'd rather be in our shoes.

Not including 1961, Hawthorn's first, from 1971 onwards they've been up near the pointy end rather than the bottom more often than not. Based on that, Hawthorn may never have a spell down the bottom so we'll never find out. Flags in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s, pretty awesome if you're a long time supporter of those 'Orrible 'Awks.

If they say it often enough, eventually they may be right. (like Geelong being too old after '10, might finally catch up this year and the next few I think :()

[QUOTE="Hawkk, post: 33838450, member: 1haven't kinda is...

Particularly when you shave off all those non access members (8000 last year)[/QUOTE]
Can we shave off Tassie members to?

We haven't had to sell games to survive so we've never had access to two home supporter bases.

I'd probably drop Saints to North levels, and bring Rich back a little too. But the rest is backed up by statistics just about.

St Kilda have a lot more supporters than North, especially latent ones, but it just doesn't look like that at the moment because the we're crap and North are going pretty well. Is there a recent year when both of these two teams have been on a similar position on the ladder? Maybe 2012 (North finished 8th, St Kilda 9th), during which St Kilda's average home crowd in Victoria was 32,697 whereas North's was 27,399. That's more than a 5,000 better average home crowd for Victorian matches in a year where North finished two wins above St Kilda.

If you look back at historical crowd figures, you will also find that St Kilda's crowds are much better than North's.
