Hawthorn determined to bounce back after wretched 2009 season

January 22, 2010
Hawthorn captain Sam Mitchell says his players are desperate to avenge their shocking 2009 AFL season and reassert themselves as one of the top clubs.

The Hawks plummeted a long way after their 2008 premiership win, missing the finals last season when they finished ninth, including five losses in their last six games.

Mitchell said the Hawks were keen to show their true worth in 2010.
"We're not very happy with the way last season went and we probably have, just to ourselves if not anyone else, a few things to prove about which is the real Hawthorn,'' he said .

(If) we can play our game style successfully and follow the instructions of our coaches then we're going to be successful because we've got the talent,'' he said. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

From the 2010 AFL Prospectus:

"Mitchell won his second PCM last season as the club's B&F. It capped off another fine year for him as ranked in the top three for clearances in the competition for the 4th straight season. He found moire of the ball than ever before, toppin g 30 disposals in 13 games and finishing with 40 disposals on two other ocassions. He was taken out of the midfield during the year and was used across half back, a role he performed well as he set up many attacks from defence. As a result of his changed rold, he recorded more kicks than handballs for the first time in his career and won a career high 18% of his disposals in the defensive 50. He covered plenty of territory, ranking no1 at the club for inside 50s/ rebound 50s combined and second for score involvements. Mitchell ranked equal second in the league for disposals and equal third for clearances during the H&A fixture.

Fantasy freako says" A gun in both forms of the game. A must have:

In his first hit out in anger for the year, the Hawthorn captain was best on ground against the hapless Tigers according to Champion Data.

Mitchell amassed 112 SC points, quite an achievement given that is not a standardised score and there were 10 minutes short of a full game. That performance would have earned closer to 150 supercoach points during the season.

Sam's dream team stats were also pretty good: 139 points. Resulting from 18 kicks, 21 handballs, 6 marks and 3 tackles.

From the TV it appeared that Mitchell carried on the role he had towards the end of last year and started off the half back flank. He also spent some considerable time in his traditional position as a pivot.

SAM Mitchell and Luke Hodge would have shared the glory as Hawthorn premiership co-captains in 2008 had president Jeff Kennett not intervened.

Kennett yesterday revealed he single-handedly blocked the idea of the pair sharing the role.
The players and coaches supported a Mitchell-Hodge partnership after Richie Vandenberg retired at the end of 2007, but Kennett was the major hurdle when it went to the board to be signed off.
"I said while I am president of Hawthorn there will not be joint captains," Kennett said yesterday.
"It's always been my view you can only have one captain of the ship.

Captain not so obvious

CAPTAINS are remembered for inspirational on-field acts. But there are many aspects to the job that aren't seen by most footy fans, yet they are just as important as picking which end to kick to after winning the toss.

Whether Hawthorn has made the right choice with Sam Mitchell as captain and Luke Hodge as vice-captain has created much debate.
But I don't think the Hawks will be worrying too much about it. They are both strong individuals who bleed for their club and understand that Hawthorn is bigger than they are.

Mitchell played with broken hand

HAWTHORN captain Sam Mitchell has been ruled out of Saturday's blockbuster against Geelong with a broken hand.

Mitchell broke a bone in his hand early in the last quarter of the dramatic win over the Western Bulldogs, yet kicked a crucial goal and effected several key smothers despite the pain.
He had surgery last night to repair the damage, having a plate and screws inserted.
But the club believes the surgery will give him a chance to return next week against the Brisbane Lions.

The Hawks are hopeful defenders Josh Gibson and Campbell Brown will return to the team this weekend.
Ruckman Simon Taylor is also a chance to return from a broken leg.

HAWTHORN skipper Sam Mitchell could make an early return from a broken hand for Saturday's clash against Brisbane in Launceston.

Mitchell had a plate inserted after playing the final quarter with the injury in the Hawks' gallant win over the Western Bulldogs in Round 14.
Forward Jarryd Roughead said today he expected Mitchell to be a positive addition to the line-up for their match at Aurora Stadium.
