OK, so we all know Gibbo is playing today for Box Hill against Collingwood.

As of right now its half way through the 3rd quarter and by all reports, despite Box Hill being down by a few goals, Gibbo is playing really well deep in defence.

Not too sure exactly who he is playing on but has had plenty of the ball and spoiled well. Has made one or two mistakes by foot but as I write, he has just spoiled the ball over the line running back with the flight deep into defence.

Expect him back for the doggies so long as he pulls up alright

Anyway just a quick update, and hopefully, I'll have my work cut out for me keeping everyone updated on his second half of the year. :thumbsu:

yeah I was at the game today also, from what i saw he looked to be his normal self and was moving around very well, should be back this week which will bolster our defence:D

Yeh, tbh I was only listening on the radio and going by some comments in the Box Hill thread. Seems to have gotten through the game alright and that's the main thing...

Hawks' Gibson has week more in reserves

Hawthorn defender Josh Gibson will have to wait one more week before he is available for senior selection as the Hawks prepare for a testing month.

Gibson has recovered from a hamstring injury and returned via the reserves at the weekend, but fellow backman Tom Murphy says it is unlikely he will line up against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG on Friday night.

Oh well, a fully fit Gibbo is what we really need. Backline seems to be holding up well for now anyway...

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/a...best-josh-gibson/story-e6frf9jf-1225890757703 We know we can match it with best: Josh Gibson

HAWTHORN defender Josh Gibson says Geelong is still the team to beat in this year's premiership race, but says Hawthorn has plenty of improvement left in the run to the finals.

Gibson pulled up well after returning to the game from a serious hamstring injury on the same day as St Kilda's Nick Riewoldt.

He was pleased to get through the match without any issues, but disappointed that the Hawks went down by two points in a classic encounter with the Cats.

"I personally use (Geelong) as the measuring stick,'' Gibson said.
"When they are behind on the scoreboard, they really apply pressure and their contested footy is just fantastic.

"It was a really exciting game, but we were on the losing side, so it is disappointing.

"There were some real positives to come out of it. They have been at the top for a long time, so in terms of matching our game plan against theirs, to lose by a couple of points shows that we are doing the right thing.''

"It is exciting to get through injury-free, but at the end of the day, we would have loved to have won this match,'' Gibson said.

Hawks vs Geelong Rd 15

Just the 7 touches and 3 tackles for Gibbo in his first game back since round 3. Apparently played on Chapman most of the game, and I must say I hardly noticed - Chappy was on fire. Still, just glad he got through fine. With a few more (successive) games under his belt I've no doubt he will start to show the value he adds to the team.

Hawks vs Brisbane Rd 16

Gibson had a reasonable game playing on Jonathan Brown who booted 3 goals in the Lions thrashing at the hands of the Hawks. Gibson had 15 disposals (5 kicks, 10 h/balls).

Hawks vs St.Kilda Rd 17

Gibson played on his hamstring buddy, Nick Riewoldt for the entire game and managed to keep him to 5 shots on goal (for 2 goals) in just they're 3rd game back from injury. Gibbo was vital in a few passages of play and gathered 16 disposals (2 kicks, 14 h/balls), often running off Riewoldt to help his fellow defenders.

Disappointment clouds Hawks' good form

HAWTHORN defender Josh Gibson says the disappointment of letting two premiership points slip in Friday night's draw with St Kilda clouded his optimism about the Hawks' consistently good form.

It came after a strong performance at Etihad Stadium from a much-improved Hawks outfit that many considered unlucky to not claim the four points against one of the premiership fancies.

Hawks vs Pt. Adelaide Rd 18

Josh was one of very few Hawks' players who could hold his head high after the game. Our back line was smashed (in part due to the lack of midfield pressure) with the exception of Gibson who kept Ebert to just 13 disposals for 1.2 while gathering 16 disposals (7 kicks, 9 h/balls) himself along with a couple of marks and tackles, running off his man to support his teammates when the the high ball came in.

Hawks vs Sydney Rd 19

Gibson was amongst the best for the brown and gold in the swans belting of the Hawks at the SCG on Saturday. He was one of few defenders to keep his opponents honest throughout the night for the Hawks, though the Hawks defence wasn't helped by a lack of pressure upfield. Josh managed 19 disposals (8 kicks, 11 h/balls), 7 marks and contributed 3 inside fifty's in what was arguably his best game for the hawks to date.

Hawks vs Melbourne Rd 20

Gibbo played a solid game down back for the hawks, keeping his opponent Brad Green to just 2 goals in the Hawks 21 point victory. Gibbo managed 15 disposals (7 kicks, 8 h/balls), 4 marks and 4 tackles for the match.

Hawks vs Fremantle Rd 21

Gibbo was certainly among the best players in the Hawks belting of the Dockers. The hawks won 155 to 39 and Gibbo starred with 34 disposals (18 kicks, 16 h/balls), 9 marks and 5 tackles in what was, by far, his most dominant game in the brown and gold to date. He and Burgoyne truly showed their worth to the team in this match, and along with Hooper, all three have been great pick-ups.

AFL.com.au Team of the Week: Round 21

HALF-BACK
Josh Gibson (Hawthorn) - Gibson played his best match for Hawthorn. The Hawks didn’t face a lot of resistance, but the former Kanga’s form was a highlight as they prepare for September. He racked up a heap of the footy across half back, gathering 34 touches and nine marks to show why his new club was so keen to acquire him late last year.

'Kiddy' Docker's plot backfires as Hawks hammer Fremantle by 116 points

Josh Gibson said the Hawks were intent on not taking Fremantle lightly.

"They had a few guys out, but we still needed to win to make the finals, so our mindset didn't change," Gibson said.

"The most pleasing thing about what we did today was that at no stage were we comfortable with it and just settle back. We kept fighting.

"Hawthorn missed out on finals last year and I didn't play them at North, so everyone's hungry to play finals. That's a real positive driving force."

Hawks vs Collingwood Rd 22

Gibson played on Travis Cloke and although he allowed Cloke 19 disposals and 5 marks, he kept him to just one shot for one goal. Gibbo managed 9 disposals (2 kicks, 7 h/balls) himself for the match and 2 tackles. With Cloke well held, and the Hawks firing, Hawthorn secures the win over the first placed Magpies.

Hawthorn vs Dockers - Elimination Final

The last time these teams met in round 21 of this year, Matthew Pavlich did not play, along with a host of other players who were being rested for finals footy. This time though, in the elimination final, Pavlich was the task at hand for Gibson, and you'd have to hand the honours to Pav. He booted 3 goals in the dockers' win over the Hawks and along with his 6 marks and 5 tackles, he had a fairly solid game. Gibbo gathered 14 disposals (5 kicks, 9 h/balls), took 4 marks and laid 2 tackles for the match.

Ashley Roberts is purring for her man Josh Gibson
The Daily Telegraph September 07, 2010 12:00AM

FORMER Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts and AFL glamour boy Josh Gibson set tongues wagging on Sunday night when the high-profile pair hooked up during a night out.

Roberts, who was linked to Bra Boy Koby Abberton during a trip to Sydney last year, apparently has a bloke stashed in every capital city.

Gibson was only too happy to meet up with Roberts at Melbourne's Cushion Lounge when Roberts and some gal pals blew into town.

Gibbo played on Taylor Walker in the Hawks round 1 encounter with the Crows over at AAMI stadium. Walker won the battle, kicking 4.2 to help the Crows secure the victory over the Hawks after trailing at half time. Gibbo had 14 disposals (8 kicks, 6 h/balls), 4 marks, 3 tackles, 4 frees for and a solitary hitout.

Hawks vs Melbourne Rd 2

Josh mainly played on Pettard for the match and kept him to just 1 goal with 12 disposals and 4 marks. Gibbo himself managed 24 disposals, 9 marks and a couple of tackles in the Hawks demolition of the Demons.

Hawks vs Richmond Rd 3

In one of Gibson's best shut down games he's ever played, he had the task on the in form Jack Riewoldt. Jack had 1 or 2 touches to his name up until half time thanks to Gibson, and only ended up with 8 disposals, 4 marks and a single, late goal. Showing his class, Gibson finished with 6 tackles, 18 disposals and a couple of marks in another demolition by the Hawks.

Hawks vs West Coast Rd 4

With tall defender Stratton doing a PCL last week and out indefinitely, the Hawks would face one of the tallest forward lines in the League - The Eagles. With Kennedy, Lynch, Cox, Naitanui and up and comer Jack Darling all spending time up forward, it was always going to be a tough ask for the Hawk's defense, especially for Gilham and Gibson. Kennedy was the man Gibbo was given the task of stopping, the big forward ending up with 4 goals and 2 behinds despite a gallant effort by an under-sized Gibson to quell his influence. The Hawks managed to sneak away with a 7 point win however, with Gibson finishing the game with 13 disposals (all handballs) and a mark in one of his less inspiring performances of the year to date.

Josh Gibson a key to Hawthorn Hawks revival
Bruce Matthews From: Herald Sun April 12, 2011 9:56am

DEFENDER Josh Gibson has been lauded as the quiet achiever in Hawthorn's impressive start to the season.

Midfielder Chance Bateman today named Gibson as a key component of the Hawks back six.

"Since he has been at the club, he has been great. He hates getting beaten and he's so strong. He's very hard to beat one-on-one,'' Bateman said.

Gallant in defeat, the Hawks took it right up to the Cats in this match and it sets up another great battle in round 12. Gibson didn't have his best game however, as his opponent, Steve Johnson, amassed 25 disposals for 4 behinds with 7 marks. He really turned it on in the third quarter and Gibbo was unable to go with him, finishing with 16 disposals (4 kicks, 12 h/balls) for just 1 mark and 2 tackles. He also gave away 2 free kicks.

Hawks vs Port Adelaide Rd 7

The Hawks, fresh off the bye, played a tough game and managed to come out the victors for the first time at AAMI stadium in a very long time. Gibson was manned up on Daniel Motlop and he kept the goal kicking sneak to just 11 disposals for 1 goal 1 behind, while gathering 19 disposals (12 kicks, 7 h/balls) and 7 marks himself.

Hawks vs St.Kilda Rd 8

Gibson lined up on his usual Saints opponent, Riewoldt, and after Roo got off to a flying start kicking 3 goals in the first quarter, Gibson would keep him goaless for the rest of the game. Gibbo's job was made even harder after Gilham went down very early on in the match with what turned out to be a season ending ACL injury. Still, the star recruit played out the game very well, finishing with 20 disposals (17 kicks, 3 h/balls) for 14 marks and 3 tackles. He also had 4 frees against.

Hawks vs Sydney Rd 9

Just like in round 7, the Hawks finally break another interstate hoodoo, this time defeating the Sydney Swans at the SCG. When goodes played through the midfield, Savage tagged him, but when Goodes moved up forward, it was Gibbo's job to quell the 2 time Brownlow medalist. Goodes ended up goaless for the match, but he did manage to gather 21 disposals for 5 marks. Gibson finished the game with 16 disposals (8 kicks, 8 h/balls), 4 marks, 2 tackles and 2 frees for.

Hawks vs Western Bulldogs Rd 10

Gibbo got the huge job on Big Bad Barry Hall and he absolutely smashed him. So badly, in fact, that Hall was subbed off at 3 quarter time, resulting in Gibson being moved onto Williams for the remainder of the match and keeping him relatively quiet for the rest of the game. Barry finished with just the 2 disposals for 1 behind while Gibbo shone with 19 disposals (10 kicks, 9 h/balls), 10 marks and 2 tackles. the hawks demoralised the Dogs, playing a very disciplined, precision passing game.

Hawks vs Fremantle Rd 11

After a mostly uninspiring 3 quarters of footy, the Hawks put on a clinic in the last quarter to turn a 20+ point deficit into a 20+ point win. Gibson was lined up against Pavlich and took the honours in this one, keeping Pav to just the 2 marks and 1 behind. Gibson finished with 13 disposals (7 kicks, 6 h/balls), 3 marks and 2 tackles.

Hawk defences down so Gibson stands up
Jesse Hogan, June 7, 2011

FOR all Hawthorn's riches in midfield and attack, its defence does not seem to be as overtly formidable. The season-ending injuries to Stephen Gilham and Ben Stratton threatened to expose that weakness; instead they have gone a long way to disproving it.

Lance Franklin's return to goalkicking form had undoubtedly been a factor in the Hawks' return to the top-four after two underwhelming seasons, but their defence too has played its part in the rise.

Only Geelong, Collingwood and Carlton have conceded fewer points this season. And while the good form of the likes of Blue Michael Jamison and Cat Harry Taylor has been recognised, the contribution of Hawk Josh Gibson to his team's rise has been largely understated.

Hawks vs Geelong Rd 12

In what was probably Gibson's worst performance statistically all year, he was matched up on Geelong power forward, James Podsiadly. Pods finished the game with 6 goals to his name, including 4 in the 2nd quarter in what was an awesome display from the big man. Gibson finished the game with 12 disposals (5 kicks, 7 h/balls), 6 tackles and 2 marks in the Hawks 5 point loss.

Hawks vs Gold Coast Rd 13

Gold Coast youngster, Tom Lynch, was the match up for Gibson in round 13. The youngster was very impressive and proved a bigger task than expected for Gibson, finishing with 3 goals and 7 marks from 15 disposals. Gibson was fairly serviceable on the rebound though, gathering 18 touches (8 kicks, 10 h/balls) and 4 marks.

Hawks vs Essendon Rd 14

Gibson came into the round 14 clash against the bombers with a heavily strapped left shoulder, and had it re-strapped after the first quarter. This didn't stop him from doing a number on promising Bombers youngster, Michael Hurley, who was only able to manage a single behind from his 11 possessions and 5 marks. Gibson's 25 disposals (18 kicks, 7 h/balls) off the half back line proved to be a real key in the Hawks' ability to rebound the ball out of their defense. He also took 11 marks for the game.

Hawks vs Collingwood Rd 15

Travis Cloke was the opponent at hand for Josh Gibson against Collingwood in round 15. Cloke finished the game with 3 goals, 3 behinds from 16 disposals and 12 marks. Gibson kept fighting all day though, even copping some friendly fire from teammate, big Max Bailey, when Max's fist ended up in Gibson's eye, finishing the game with 17 disposals (11 kicks, 6 h/balls) and 4 marks.

Round 16 Season 2011

Key defender Josh Gibson had a battle on his hands against Brisbane strong man Jonathan Brown.

Gibson started on fire in the match at Aurora Stadium and lead the stats with 11 posessions to quarter time; a fact highlighted on Monday nights edition of Footy Classified which showed some of the excellent work in out marking or just generally beating the Brisbane champion.

Ended the match with 9 kicks, 7 marks and 15 handballs, 3 tackles and 2 frees against.

At the end of the day his 92nd AFL match was one of his best games for Hawthorn.

Hawthorn tames gutsy Brisbane Lions by 42 points at Aurora Stadium
AAP From:
Herald Sun July 09, 2011 5:09PM

Defender Josh Gibson, who was locked in an intriguing duel with Brisbane captain Jonathan Brown throughout the day, said the Hawks simply toughed it out in the awkward conditions, and finished full of running.

"That wind was really swirling, it was making it tough going across the ground, so it was hard to know which way the advantage was going today," Gibson said.

"This is our home ground down here. They took it up to us, so it was pleasing the boys kicked back in the last quarter."

....Brown worked hard to try to get his team back into the contest in the second half.

Gibson clearly had his measure early, but the Lions' skipper ended up kicking three goals to pass DanielBradshaw as the Brisbane Lions' all-time record goalkicker. He has now booted 498 goals.

Gibson said his task on Brown was made a bit easier by the assistance of his teammates in the back half, a fact Lions coach Michael Voss picked up after the match.

"He (Brown) is a champion," Gibson said.

"To the boys' credit, they got in his space a bit, and there was good pressure in the midfield, which makes that kick coming in a bit higher, which makes my job a little bit easier.

"So I didn't get exposed to too many wrestles with him, because he is a lot bigger than me."

Fists of Fury

Throughout the 2010 offseason media experts and regular punters alike aired their concerns that hawthorn’s undersized backline would prove to be the ultimate undoing of its premiership aspirations. The loss of Stephen Gilham and Ben Stratton to seemingly season-ending knee injuries in the opening rounds of the season did little to allay these fears. While the 2011 flag does not reside at Waverly it wasn’t for the lack of trying on the part of Josh Gibson. In a team where Clarko considers anyone taller than himself ‘key position’, the 189cm Gibson was charged with taming the veritable array of gorillas and beasts the opposition stationed inside its forward 50.

While not blessed with the desired physical attributes required to quell an opposition’s number one forward, Gibbo’s superb timing and football nous allow him punch above his weight and compete with opponents twice his size. Watching Josh live gives you an appreciation for how well he reads the play, critical in an era of team defence and zones, and positions himself to ensure he’s always able to affect a contest. Numerous times on television his fist seemingly appears out of nowhere to belt the ball to safety.

Gibbo started 2011 in fine form, smothering Ricky Pettard and racking up 24 possessions and nine marks himself against the dees in round two, a timely reminder to the hawk faithful of his capabilities after an injury interrupted 2010 season. He continued to build momentum through the first half of the season with impressive games against the tigers (6 tackles, 18 disposals), saints (20 disposals, 14 marks) and dogs (19 disposals, 10 marks), culminating in an imperious 25 possession 11 mark display in the demolition of Essendon in round 14. Gibbo’s two best games for the year came in the latter half of the season - nullifying Jonathan Brown in round 16 while amassing 24 possessions and two Brownlow votes for his troubles, and doing a stellar impersonation of the Great Wall in the semi-final against Sydney with an AFL record 21 spoils and a best on ground performance.

There is of course no such thing as a blemish-free season when competing at the highest level. Gibbo was constantly found out of position against a rampaging James Podsiadly in round 12 due to Geelong’s precise ball movement and the centre-square dominance of Ottens, a clear demonstration of defence being the responsibility of the team as a whole.

One poor display shouldn’t tarnish a season in which Gibbo had his way with the likes of Pavlich, Brown, Riewoldt x 2, Goodes, and Hall as though they were members of the Pussycat Dolls. While the AA selectors weren’t able to find a spot for a rebounding defender who takes the opposition’s number one forward and leads the competition for spoils, Josh was recognised for his efforts at the club’s B&F night coming runner-up in the Peter Crimmins Medal, winning the ‘most consistent player’ award, and also collecting the ‘best player of the finals’ gong.

When a player switches teams during their career they are more often than not remembered more for their time at one club rather than another. It’s great to see how Hawthorn and Gibbo have embraced one another so quickly, the supporters love him, the players love playing with him, and Buddy has a mate to go manscaping with. 2012 promises to be another big year for Gibbo who will no doubt benefit from the return of Gilham and Stratts to the line-up. The make-up of Hawthorn’s back six looks to be a subject of heated debate over the coming off-season, with the acquisition of Boumann in addition to the returning players making the competition for spots all the more fierce. A good problem to have. Ideally Josh will return to his duties as a rebounding third tall, allowing him to leave his opponent whenever possible to help out the rest of his undersized counterparts.

Hawks vs Collingwood - Rd 1, 2012

The Hawks kick started their 2012 campaign with a win over last year's runner up, Collingwood, by 22 points. Gibson was solid down back, helping to keep the Magpies dangerous power forwards, Cloke and Dawes, to just 2 goals between them. Gibson gathered 13 disposals himself (6 kicks, 7 h/balls) and also had 4 marks and tackles.

Hawks vs Geelong - Rd 2, 2012

The Hawks were gallant in defeat going down by just 2 points against the Cats, who would again stretch their winning streak against the brown and gold to remain undefeated by them since the 2008 Grand Final. The Geelong tall forwards took the cookies against the Hawthorn defense, Hawkins and Podsiadly kicking 8 goals between them for the match. Gibson tried hard throughout, as evidenced by his game high 8 tackles to go along with 16 disposals (6 kicks, 10 h/balls) and 2 marks.

Hawks vs Adelaide - Rd 3, 2012

Gibson had a wonderful game in the Hawks 56 point thrashing of Adelaide at the MCG. Gibson played on Walker for most of the night, keeping the promising key forward to just 4 disposals and 2 behinds, while successfully repelling a number of forward fifty entries for the Crows as well. Gibson finished with a massive 30 disposals (21 kicks, 9 h/balls) and 15 marks, the highest of any player for the match, to go along with an impressive 6 tackles.

Hawks vs West Coast - Rd 4, 2012

The Hawks traveled out west to Patterson's Stadium to take on the undefeated Eagles in what would be another huge task for them in an already challenging start to the season, falling short of the line by just 5 points. Both sides had plenty of opportunities to put the opposition away, but inaccurate goal kicking saw neither team able to take any real advantage. Gibson and the Hawks defense were able to keep the numerous Eagles tall forward options to about 10 shots collectively for the game, for 3 goals. Gibson had 12 disposals (9 kicks, 3 h/balls), 4 marks and 2 tackles.

Hawks vs Sydney - Rd 5, 2012

After a fairly consistent start to a very tough year, the Hawks put in one of their worst halves of football in recent memory, against the undefeated Swans down in Tassie, getting completely overrun in the 3rd and 4th quarters to give up a 26 point half time lead to lose by 33 points. A factor in this was surely the knock to the ankle that Gibson copped in the second quarter, which eventually led to him being subbed off in the early stages of the 3rd quarter. Before going off injured, he was playing well as the loose man in defense and managed 12 disposals (5 kicks, 7 h/balls), 4 marks and 2 tackles.

Hawks vs St.Kilda - Rd 6, 2012

*Gibson out injured - ankle.

Hawks vs Melbourne - Rd 7, 2012

*Gibson out injured - ankle.

Hawks vs Fremantle - Rd 8, 2012

The Hawks took on the Dockers down in Launceston and beat them soundly in the end by 66 points. Gibson did well in his comeback match playing as the loose man in defense and racking up 19 disposals (7 kicks, 12 h/balls), 3 tackles as well as numerous spoils as the third man up.

Hawks vs Richmond - Rd 9, 2012

After coming off a 10 goal victory against the Dockers last week, it was the Hawks turn to feel the hurt of a 10 goal loss...at the hands of a very potent looking Richmond outfit. Gibson wasn't really able to have much of an impact in defense, picking up 15 disposals (7 kicks, 8 h/balls), 4 marks and 3 tackles, while also being denied any opportunity to help out fellow key defender Ryan Shoenmakers who was well beaten by Tiger big man, Jack Riewoldt, who kicked 6.2 for the match (although 4 of them were in fourth quarter junk-time).

Hawks vs Kangaroos - Rd 10, 2012

The Hawks were back in Tassie this week to take on the Kangaroos, and take them on they did, obliterating their rivals by a massive 115 points. Gibson was very solid in a shut down role in defense on Petrie, keeping the dangerous Kangaroos key forward to just the one goal and 4 marks for the game. Halfway through the third quarter, Gibson was subbed off for a rest allowing new Hawks youngster, Josh Hill, to have a run around. Franklin was the star of the game, booting a crazy 13 goals!

Hawks vs Port Adelaide - Rd 11, 2012

The Hawks travelled to AAMI stadium this week to end the Power's 3 game winning streak, defeating them by 46 points. Gibson was lined up on Jay Schulz for the match and despite Schulz copping a big hit in a marking contest in the second quarter, he still managed to kick 3 goals for the game. Gibson was very good himself though, amassing 24 disposals (13 kicks, 11 h/balls), 11 marks and 2 tackles to help his team cruise toward victory.

Hawks vs Brisbane - Rd 12, 2012

The Hawks proved too strong for the Lions at a wet and soggy MCG, running away with a 10 goal win. Gibson was lined up against Merrett for the game and soundly beat his opponent, keeping him to just 0.2 from 3 marks, while still providing some run and carry out of defense with 14 disposals (6 kicks, 8 h/balls) and 6 marks.

Hawks vs BYE - Rd 13, 2012

*Bye round.

(more to come soon...)

Its always interesting to look back to see what we gave up for our trades and see what they picks have done, this is fron an article on Fox Sports link

Josh Gibson
Here's one of the great success hits of the Hawthorn recruiters in recent times. Gibson has been a rock in defence since crossing from North Melbourne in 2010. He finished second in the club's best and fairest last year. Traded for picks 25 (Aaron Black) and 41 (Ayden Kennedy), the Hawks would make that deal again 100 times out of 100.
