Labor chose to blacken the name of the nation’s sporting elite to give itself a short-term political distraction, Mr Abbott said, describing it as a ‘‘silly, squalid, sordid’’ thing to do.

‘‘But far from being the blackest day for Australian sport, it was a black day for politics, it was a black day for the Labor party.’’

‘‘It’s pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.’’

Eighteen months later, a lot of decent people were still struggling to restore their reputations.

‘‘It was just really appalling that people could stoop to this level,’’ the prime minister said.

And so it begins.

Abbott could be the Bombers best friend.

If Middleton rules the evidence inadmissible, Abbott can simply squeeze ASADA for funding to stop a second investigation.

Abbott can then blame labor for the utensil-up

Very much his MO

The further this shemozzle continued, the higher the chance the Libs were going to use it as a club to smash Labor with.

It's laughable that last year there were HTBers insisting he wouldn't do so.

The court case has coincided with a need for some distraction.

Be assured of one thing: Abbott will stop at nothing in the pursuit of smacking Labor.

Political point scoring. If he steps in then he's no better than the Labor party were.

Bet he steps in.

Realpolitik says no.

He gets a free whack, and well timed you'd think. Would be poor politics to then go ahead and do something with huge potential to slam his own dick in the door.

Would have to perceive a massive upside to act on top of the talk, and I can't see it. Then again this government has not been characterized by sound judgement.

After Hockey's car comment the other day I think Tones will have to get in line to slam it in the door.

Good grief.

I wouldn't listen to this ******* Abbott anyway. Only today he's saying that it was Labor's fault that Liberal MPs were having to resign for taking illegal developers donations and lying to ICAC. Why? Because if Labor had not banned political donations from developers in 2009 then it wouldn't be illegal now and therefore the Liberal MPs would be doing nothing wrong.

Yet another item in this saga that the Essendon "foamers" have been correct about. Next step will be a judicial review.

When are you guys going to accept that the stuff that we've been saying all along is pretty much correct?

What are you going to do when the SCNs don't stick and you find out that Hirdy wasn't as bad as he's been painted?

Just like a drug going on the safe list now means it was fine to take previous to that finding? Wow the similarities keep building up.

It certainly seems entirely consistent with Essendon logic:

Abbott is a political opportunist, therefore Essendon is not guilty of using performance enhancing drugs.

will be interesting to see what comes out about it all when the books are written and the stories told down the track

was the Blackest Day in Sport a badly needed political distraction or an attempt to flush out witnesses and whistle blowers???

Fairfax haven't even reported it yet. Pisser.

The Prime Minister of Australia comments on their biggest story of the last 2 years and they don't think it's worth column inches because it doesn't fit their narrative.

You honestly think this is the biggest news story of the last 2 years?

Labor party sticking it to essendon ? Doesnt add up somehow.

Is abbott reading this wrong ? Most people believe essendon are as guilty as, and the rest are quoting technicalities

Or is "blackest day" a bit too colourful a phrase ? Abbott " blood on his hands" would be an expert on that
