The big thing is this year we are running more players behind the ball than at any time in our history.

This enables our defenders to penetrate the zone and run free. Schofield, Wellingham, Hurn, Sheppherd and Butler all in on the act.

At center bounce downs we structure up with a seven man defence on most occasions and this just adds to the run especially with a winning ruck.

This has resulted in faster and more precise ball movement through the corridor. There is no doubt that we look way faster this season but it is speed of ball movement rather than leg speed that has made the difference.

I also think JK, Lecca and even Hill are actually benefiting from a less congested forward 50. JK in particular is the sort of forward that benefits from space. Darling will also hopefully.

At the game on Saturday what we lacked was just a speedy agile classy forward crumber to really capitalise inside the forward 50.

Yes, but not at the expense of Cripps or Hill. If Newman or Karpany come good I think we should try and go in with one less tall - Sinclair out, with Gov and McInnes to pinch hit at either end. Not sure how much Bennell is adding down back, shame he doesn't have the goal sense or fitness to swing forward (as far as I'm aware).

We have 2 blokes playing small forward avergaing 2+ goals a game placing them in the top 20 goal kickers this year

One of them is manic for forward 50 tackling, the other at the moment is running deep into defence and assisting the defenders and midfielders clear opposition forward thrusts.

Small forward is a strength at the moment

I understand what Prem87 is getting at though, various times on the weekend we had no one down after a marking contest. Our smalls have a tendency to play tall, not genuine crumbers however Hill has been doing this well on occasion this year.

A lot of that is game play thought and speed of ball movement.

WHen the ball recoils from half back to full forward, the likes of Hill in particular are caught at half back helping out the defence. There is no way they can be under the talls feet

When it is slower ball movement the lads are there - think of Hills terrific crumb against GC the previous week.

Right now I suggest our small forwards are an absolute strength. Cripps pushed into the centre square at times, Hill into d50 and both are high on the Goal list.

Hills form is thanks to having a CHF like Mcinnes playing in the squad as it allows him to play further up the field and also as a crumber. I wonder if this will still happen once Darling is back in the squad?

McInnes has been great for our structure, I too question whether Darling can play that CHF role with the same impact. Darling would be suited as a flanker who leads high?

I don't think our structure will work that well with McInnes, Kennedy, Ruck and Darling - it becomes very top heavy - particularly if Darling isn't able to rotate through the midfield

Part of our success is having less reliance on a handful of midfielders and having more people rotate through the guts (ie Cripps).

The taller we go up front with specialist forwards, leaves less room for mids like shuey, yeo, priddis to spell. And as such we then rely on those blokes to be permanent mids - which is what we are moving away from.

I have enjoyed what Fraser is doing - but he isn't as good as Darling and I think people forget what Darling is able to bring to the table. IN addition to being able to provide a contest up leading from CHF, he has immense defensive pressure and greater goal scoring ability.

Oh i agree i was just saying if Mcinnes is in form it will be hard to drop him for Darling. Only way i would do it if we played one less ruck which i do not want to do. We could end up with the same problem next year with Emac and Brown back and in that case i would still leave McGovern down back with Emac and Schoey and not bring in Brown at all.

When Darling comes back i wonder if we will look at keeping McInnes and just play the 1 ruck. McGovern and McIness to give Nic Nat a rest
Doubt it. I think it would be our most ideal set up though (Mackenzie, Schofield/Brown back and Kennedy, Darling and McGovern forward).

NN just doesn't have the tank to ruck 85% of the game, and McGovern probably just isn't quite tall enough to ruck for large portions of the game.

Yep as a 3rd tall on the flanks is his best position if Mcinnes is still doing well we have some interesting (Good) times ahead!
I think the idea is Lycett/Sinclair is meant to play more of a focal part of the forward line as a FF or CHF rotating with Kennedy. When Nic Nat goes forward we play Kennedy more at CHF and NicNat to take chronic hangs in the square. Thus Darling, Kennedy and Resting ruckman are the KPF's. Making the ruck in Lycett/Sinclair more of a forward who rucks than a resting ruckman.

I think simmo deserves a lot of credit for how he has managed his players this year. He has developed a number of players by giving them frank honest appraisals of where they are at then focusing them to provide a role that complements their skills and the team needs.

Prime examples, wellingham, hill, shepphard, masten, cripps and schofield. All playing the best footy of their careers and i think simmo deserves a lot of credit for that.

I am truly excited for the first time in a number of years on watching this group evolve.

Just Wondering how those vehemently Pro Suma and complete staunch defenders of Worsfold are feeling right now.

Do you still believe Simmo is out of his depth and this appointment has set u back years? Just a formality that Simmo would automatically get sacked, lucky to last till the end of Year 2?

I was a defender of Woosha, but wasn't disappointed with Simo's appointment.

Defender of Woosh =/= hatred of Simo.

Don't know about you but I'm in the process of erecting a shrine to our lord savior Simpson

Defending Woosha had nothing to do with Simpson. It's not as though we pulled a Mark Harvey on him.

Woosha was long done.

Our team structures and ball movement are really starting to take shape.

That's simpson and the rest of the coaching group. A lot of respect for what he's building
