This may be an inappropriate topic for public consumption... but they're professional athletes, so tough. We're often discussing how much this player gets, how we can't fit this and that into the cap etc., and I thought I'd have a go drafting what our player payments would look like. I put this together and then the new CBA was released so had to restart

Following are the criteria:
- The salary cap, known officially as Total Player Payments, is A$8.78m for the 2012 season, floor is 95% or A$8.34m
- The average wage for an AFL player was $227k in 2011, at some point this week i saw the figure $236 as 2012's average so i thought, that sounds believable.
- Only half of the salary paid by a club to players on the rookie list counts towards the league's salary cap; rookies are to be paid $53,700 for 2012, so let's say $27k each.
- M. Doughty's (Soul Coughing!) payments only count for 50% being a Veteran previously - i can't find anything about Veteran allowances for 2012, although i thought i saw that there's no discount anymore?
- For most people with 50 games or less, i gave them $150k. Couldn't find the minimum salary for an AFL player allowed, although that would help a lot, hint hint, if anyone knows post it and i can redo.

Otherwise, with a 49 man roster, it's difficult to fit us all in. I suspect we've got such a large roster at the moment, because we have so many players who wouldn't command very much money? Was quite a juggling act, and I'm sure there'll be many opinions that i have under or overpaid players. If i could find the floor for payments for full-list players, that would probably go a long way to correcting the figures.

So... how close am I, and how can you help me correct it?

Maximum 100% $8,780
Minimum 95% $8,341
Total 100% $8,766 ($14k short of the cap!)

Is Knights our second highest paid player, if so massive WTF! should half his salary and give the remainder to Thommo.

I'd say most new draftees are between the 60k-100k mark. Here's a really helpful article I found, written last year:

http://www.afl.com.au/tabid/208/default.aspx?newsid=90746
Yep, a mate of mine was on around 63k before playing bonuses last year. That is a typical draftees salary, with first rounders on a little more than others. Thommo, VB, Stiffy and Rutten would be on more than you have listed. Knights is a our 2nd highest player I believe, as we had to pay a shitload to keep him after his 2009 season. Rookies also get a minimum of 34.5k (or very close to that), with playing bonuses obviously. This is increasing to around 55k in the next few years I read.

Tex would also be on around the 350k mark, easily. Also the Porpoise would be around the 300k mark.

I believe the changes with Veterans stipulates that any player who has given 10 years of service to one club, regardless of age, qualifies for a payment of $100k pa outside of the salary cap. Pretty sure there is no limit in regards to how many eligibile players per club can receive said payment.

Not exactly sure, but I would guess that any player eligible who is still on a current contract, would have $100k of said contract removed from the cap.

Exactly right. I wrote a thread on this earlier but nobody replied. I think Reilly, Johncock, Rutten and Doughty would qualify. As for the last bit I'm not sure either when the new rules take effect (immediately or after renewal of individual players' contracts.)

I think rookies are actually $41,400 for 2012 - the increase starts kicking in for 2013 (at least, that was what the Age reported in their coverage of the new pay deal).

Thommo is our highest paid player.

AFL does not. name players in salary brackets they list. It is media speculation that suggest it is Tip. This makes a better story than our.best player.being.highest paid.

I believe Vince and Knights are well paid as well.

Tip is well looked after in third party deals....."Tippets Tips"....

The old CBA details exactly what a first year draftee gets (plus any bonuses for being a first rounder, or a Top 10 draftee).

I'm sure the new one will too.

Thommo is 100% not our highest paid player.

It's Tippett then Knights.

He was signed to a three (I think?) year deal at the end of 2009 on big money. Rumours were he was indeed our second-highest paid player at the time, and I doubt anyone has overtaken him in the interim.

Needless to say it hasn't exactly worked out as we hoped given his horrific run with injuries. There were times 12 months ago where it looked like he may never get fit enough to play again.

Symes would have to be on base salary conscidering we gave him only a 1 year deal, you would assume it was take it or leave it.

What is the proportion of 'base' salary compared to match payments/bonuses do you reckon?

Just rough percentages of the total cap. Anyone got any idea?
Scully earned about 180k in his first year with Melbourne, and was on a base wage of just over 100k (as he was a number 1 pick). So roughly 3.5k per game he played that year, which is the same for most players I believe.

Not sure how accurate the numbers are but I would like to thank/congratulate the OP on his research (no sarcasm). Most revealing ...

Thank you Sekaj. Sadly, only the rookies would be accurate, as they're on a specific pay scale. Everything is a vaguely educated guess.

With all the tidbits in the thread, I will repost it sometime soon, with *more accurate* numbers.
