They used to say No Carey, No North but last year we saw just how important Gary Ablett Jnr … “The Little Master” … is to Gold Coast’s onfield fortunes. No Gaz, no Suns and no finals.

But in Fantasy terms losing the likes of Ablett doesn’t hurt too much because you can get someone in to replace them at an almost like for like basis. How GC would have loved that capability last season.

The question this year is should you pick Gaz and as long as he is full recovered from his shoulder operation, there’s no reason why not to. He costs a lot at $675,000 but you gotta pay to get quality.

Build your midfuield around Gaz. Again. The real questions lie elsewhere with the Suns. There’s lots of talent, but some potential major pitfalls too.

GET THEM IN

Jaeger O’Meara (MID $525,000)

I think the Jaegerbomb is very nicely priced here and as coaches pay more attention to the likes of Prestia and Swallow, O’Meara could get off the leash.

Nick Malceski (DEF $521,000)

Gold Coast wouldn’t have got Malceski in unless they had plans for play him, and through him, a great deal. Again, price is OK and he will get the gametime and the ball.

NOT WITH A BARGEPOLE

David Swallow (MID $531,000)

Having lost his dual position status, Swallow also loses a spot in my side. He’s priced just a bit too high and Gold Coast have so many options. Is a bit injury proneish too. Happy to be proven wrong, but won’t be picking him.

Peter Wright (FWD/RUCK $278,000)

You know how in every league there’s at least one team that just gets routinely thrashed and the coach appears to stop even looking at after about Round Three? This year, those teams will have Peter Wright in them, because people, did Google and stuff in the five minutes they spent selecting their side.

WORTH A PUNT

Tom Nicholls (RUCK $299,000)

Very much a punt, but one that could pay off big time if Rodney Eade’s decides to go with the athletic Nicholls as his first choice ruck. Monitor him in the NAB Thingo.

Jack Martin (FWD $285,000)

Certainly worth a look in the FWD line at that price, especially if in “real life” the Suns use him as a MID. But every chance he takes the Harley Bennell role up forward and Bennell goes on ball full time.
