Emma Quayle opinion piece 10/10:

"...it is hard to understand, for a number of reasons, why the club is being punished for not breaking any rules, why it is in fact being punished for adhering to rules, and why the AFL Players Association was never consulted about a decision that has reduced the options available to players who either want to go to Sydney, or get out and play somewhere else..."

More than a bit ridiculous, insanity at the knee jerk reactions to the Eddie whinges IMHO

Lose a player like Malceski, and you can only recruit via draft picks which take 2-3 years to develop.
Already have a 2-3 year investment in a player who wants to leave such as Membrey, and you can only replace with draft picks which again take 2-3 years to develop.

I guess this gives more opportunity to the current kids next year

I just heard the news on SEN. I am shocked by this terrible news. Not happy at all !!

That is bizarrely outrageous.

Banning a club from trading and forcing it only replace players through the draft for complying with league rules.

I think it means players on our list currently who were perhaps at risk of being delisted (Harry Marsh and Xavier Richards spring to mind) will be given more chances than had they been on the list and not done much in their first few years say 5 years ago. Punting players with senior bodies is now not going to be advisable for the club over the next 2 years.

Good job, league office. Clear and transparent to the very end. They're quite genuinely making it up as they go along and bending to the whims of shameless Victorian loud mouths.

That is ridiculous, why not just apply the new COLA rules to new players recruited during the transition period so anyone brought in over average salary doesn't get a loading?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You cannot stop the success of the GWS juggernaut they say. Not on our watch.

Appalling.

Equalisation, socialism, fairness all just buzzwords to ensure a doctored outcome that aids the elite and ruling political class.

Oh hush silly.

Enough common sense from you :)

The board has long said there should be COLA but only under a certain wage/contract level closely monitored and run by the AFL to top up the poor buggers on minimum salaries. It really ain't that hard.

The issue has and is as long as Sydney is just successful enough to not upset the VFL power base so they get the Sydney market share and some bums on seats whilst being able to trumpet a national competition we were fine.

Once we threaten the established order then we had to be brought to heel.

it's not just the Vic clubs that are antsy about the extra cap space ...

either way, the AFL does look like it's just making s**t up on the run.. Thankfully the Essendon/Ryder/Port Adel 'Free Agent' clause has been knocked on the head but it wouldn't have surprised me...

just waiting for FA compo to dissapear next year just before Dangerfield leaves... guess it won't be to Sydney now, though..

You don't understand the mechanism or how it is paid.

Best to shut up before you make a complete idiot of yourself although the rest of your post is a give away.

This is seriously screwed up s**t.

My first thought is to bank all the cap over the next two years and buy up big in 2017. Throw this s**t back in their faces. "What mofos?! You told us this was the way we had to do it?"

My second thought is that bringing this on us right in our premiership window is a massive handicap, and plays right into the hands of the VFL. At least is gives us a retort to "AFL's pets/lovechild" bullshit

Few things that doesn't make much sense to me:

1. We trade in a player, we lose COLA which means all contracts with COLA now immediately are paid within our salary cap(as players can't suddenly stop being paid the amount contract states, as law suits galore) more than likely immediately pushing us over the salary cap. Salary cap sanctions to follow.
2. We can't trade in players-huge disadvantage. Hell it's a punishment that is given to drug cheats/salary cap cheats- not those clubs that follow the rules.

The whole thing is a total mess and joke.

The VFL has never left us.
Fat Eddie can pull the strings as much as he wants but instead of obsessing about a club with a genuine culture, he should worried about how Collingwood can't play finals.

We will need to delist a set number of players from our best 22 in order to go below the cap again.. not going to happen we would be finished.

Both great points.

The first being particularly important because this decision holds a gun to our head. If we bring anyone in, we go over the cap and get punished further.

And the AFL didn't even have enough guts to announce it publicly. Had to wait for Quayle to dig it up. Props to her again by the way.

Hahahahahhahaha. Unbelievable!

Gill McLachlan is clearly going to be a simpering lap dog of the Maguires and Newbolds.

Penalised for following the rules... far out. Far ****ing out.

Dude just like your club they are prepared to bomb us back to stone age to make sure the same city rivals get a strong foothold.

I am not mad at GWS just the mechanism but they were prepared for you to rot so GC could thrive.

Same s**t different town.
