THE AFL will not step in and force Essendon to remove James Hird as senior coach even if Bombers players are found guilty of doping charges.

Essendon players remain in limbo as they await a decision from the league’s anti-doping tribunal regarding the club’s controversial 2012 supplements program.

But it is not only their fate yet to be decided, with Essendon admitting it has “pretty tough decisions” to make on its senior coach if players are found guilty.

Hird and the AFL have endured a poisonous relationship, with the senior coach banned for 12 months and believing he was made a scapegoat.

He said in court he only accepted his penalty under “duress, threats and inducements”.

Interesting stance from the AFL given many on here seem to think he will be banned from the AFL for life come late March

That's probably because it's not the AFL's problem to remove Hird if his players are found guilty of doping.
That would be Essendon's problem to remove him.

But I'm glad Essendon are still looking to be on the front foot about all these matters and take responsibility into their own hands.
