Alex Keath - would anyone take the chance?

Never knew he was 196cm - every club would take a chance on Keath.

"Clubs are able to sign players from other sports, or who haven't been registered with a football club for at least three seasons, as category B rookies.
It means his contract would not count in a club's salary cap until he was promoted into the senior team."

Unless they already have their quota of category B rookies, it's hard to see a rich club not throwing some money at him. A chance to get a decent player that won't cost a pick or salary cap would be one of the better ways to use your $$$.

Also you'd think that a guy that grew up playing footy and was highly rated would also be more likely to succeed than some of those American basketballers who hadn't even heard of footy.

196cm athlete who grew up with the game and can be signed for no salary cap or list space. I can't see why any team with money to burn wouldn't be interested in at least giving him an interview and medical.

The reason he might give cricket away is probably because he looks best suited as shield/test player and the money just isn't there unless you get to the test team. Allrounders have some value in T20 but his bowling doesn't suit it and he's not a power hitter.

Was talking to an administrator of the Melbourne stars last week. He said Sydney have been flying him up here and there to have a look around and a run etc

Given he's eligible for a Category B rookie (and therefore doesn't take up a place on the rookie list + doesn't need to be drafted), most clubs would be very interested in him. Especially given he was supposed to be a gun footballer (good enough to make the Suns original list) before choosing cricket.

A base contract with Cricket Victoria starts at $61,000 and can be boosted by $4000 per Shield game.

Keath has played just six Shield games and nine domestic one-dayers for the Bushrangers in his five years as a contracted player.

I think I'd be giving footy another shot if he's got the ability to make it.

It's a big call for an all-round talent like Keath to choose cricket over football these days.

There's oodles of money to be made in football and it is well spread with 18 AFL teams each with lists of 40 odd players.

If you can't consistently make the Australian cricket team you'll never get wealthy playing cricket.

All he needs a few good T20 performances, then he can jump from country to country playing in the T20 leagues for $$$

Get your hand off it.

A contract for a senior, established domestic cricketer is comfortably over six figures. Not to mention there is the lucrative nature of domestic T20 leagues both here and abroad. And overseas pro's playing county cricket is not exactly slumming it either.

Yes, there is more money for a greater proportion of professional footballers, but to say that you can't get wealthy playing cricket is ludicrous.
