Lol Wigarus features in an AFL article about their stupid player ratings:

Twitter chatter
There's been plenty of talk in the Twitterverse about why Fremantle's Luke McPharlin is No. 288 in the overall ratings and is just the 77th-best defender. Wigarus, tweeted: "How do you justify McPharlin's ranking?"

The thing about McPharlin is that although he averages a touch over 15 possessions per game, which is not bad for a key defender, his direct involvement in passages of play that lead to Fremantle scores is not particularly high.

Direct involvement in passages of play that lead to a score. Blinkers well and truly on. How about actions that prevent one?

It's the other side of the coin. No point in scoring a heap if you leak points like a sieve.

The guy just needs to say, there are issues with the current set up that we're looking to try to fix. Until then, ignore the ranking of any key defender or guys that lock down... It's cod sh!t.

Yep nice work Wigarus. Their response was that they don't know how to figure it out the correct way.

Piss poor joke of a system. Looked at the list and they had defenders in the bottom 4 clubs miles ahead of McPharlin. Sure.. an AA honour doesn't count  . Why bother looking at the system when it doesnt take into account the role of each players such as defenders spoiling and keeping opponents to x number of goals rather then "direct influence on the involvement of the play".

Agreed. This whole rating system feels to be a companion piece to the Dreamteam take on the game.

Was having a look at the midfield player ratings and our highest ranked midfielder is Steven Hill at 88 lol was surprised not really sure how it work but geez we must have a s**t midfield going by this system!!!

Defenders defending must be a strange concept.

Oh hai gais :)

You have exposed these mathematical geeks who know nothing about football.

Watch out the AFL are already on to you.

My theory is that they built a system to reinforce their predetermined order of rankings.
More likely the model they have devised pushes enough of the players the developers were expecting to see up to the top but at the cost of making a nonsensical ranking of everyone else. If score involvements are of such weighting as to significantly affect a key defenders ranking then clearly their system is floored. The fact they would defend that is not surprising however as the alternative is something along the lines of the admitting: "It's a fair cop; I admit we don't really have that deep an understanding of the game and the same applies to the senior AFL officials who approved it without spending any time to validate its logic. You've caught us out. We are all idiots and I now going to commit ritual suicide in shame. Goodbye."

I wonder if they register a statistic for opposition offensive plays stopped?
How many 'points' does Dawson get when he leaves his opponent and nullifies an oncoming attack by bumping a player up the field without taking possession of the ball?

If the answer is zero, then the system is well and truly f&*$&*&%d

Dawson is a spud and the system proved it! What more do you want ;)

Being facetious people :D

the system isn't a player ranking. its a score involvements system. Teams who score heavily are biased.

So it basically favours one way footballers, which is probably why it so disproportionately favours West Coast midfielders despite their midfield being crap.

Freo vs North: A Player Ratings preview

Freo have no players in the Top 80.
North have 6 players in the Top 80.

Defence will be a sore point, with the 295th McPharlin and 351st Dawson anchoring the Freo backline. Lee Spurr has been the big mover this week, increasing his rank to 385th but remains one spot lower than Adam Selwood.

North must have of the stingiest defences in the league, with all of their back 6 having a higher ranking than Luke McPharlin.

It's going to be a long day for Freo's midfield, with Harvey (14th), Wells (20th) and Swallow (41st) all expected to dominate before Freo's top midfielder Stephen Hill (83rd) even gets a look in. Apparently Michael Barlow has been in reasonable form, but the 201st ranked player has failed to impress the judges, trending nowhere unlike every other player who played this week.

Despite Pavlich having a terrible start to the year then getting injured, he's still Freo's top rated forward at 72. The media are hyping Walters as a gamechanging inclusion for Freo, but not if you consult the rankings. I don't think Brad Scott will have many nightmares about the 334th best player in the league. According to him, "that's only 17 spots higher than Zac Dawson".

North also appear to have weak forward line outside of their Top 100 players in Petrie and Thomas. Ross Lyon will need to concentrate his low quality backline on stopping these two players because there's nothing else that should worry him; and certainly not the 477th ranked Aaron Black.

North only have one classified ruck - yet another platinum Top 100 player in Todd Goldstein (70th). You wouldn't expect 275th ranked Zac Clarke to give him any trouble, and certainly not Jack Hannath. At 581st, there's actually been some confusion over whether Hannath just won a competition in the paper to run out there with the Freo boys this season.

So what does this tell us? Freo will get monstered in every area of the ground, especially their horrific defence. North by 83.
