The US govt??The problem I've always had with the deposing of Middle Eastern/North African governments is that we have never known what we will be getting that replaces them and it has now been shown without exception that the new governments are worse than the old ones.
I've travelled through Libya when Gaddafi was in power and whilst I won't say he was a saint, he wasn't as bad as the West made him out to be, he was a hell of a lot better than the Saudi's have ever been. Just as with Iran, Egypt and Iraq under Saddam, they would show no mercy to Islamic fundamentalists and actively looked to clean them out of their countries. The West though used these groups as reason for wanting the governments overthrown and now we are paying the price. Getting rid of one iron fisted government when you know that what replaces them will include radical fundamentalists is complete lunacy, but unfortunately the Western world is currently run by a bunch of lunatics and it will take a generation to clean them up.
Just look at what has happened in countries the West has caused an overthrow (or tried to overthrow) the government in recent times:
Iraq - gone from Shiite run government that was only against Sunni groups who were aligned to Saudi Arabia and want Saudi style laws, where other religious minorities openly tolerated (13% population Coptic Christian) with a successful economy and constantly improving standard of living and standard level of corruption ; to a country near the bottom of the standard of living charts worldwide, no religious tolerance of minority religious (Coptic Christians <1%) and a government hell bent on retribution of all those from the former regime, with rampant corruption that is strangling a collapsed economy.
Libya - was a strong growing economy expanding from just oil products, could lay strong claims to the following compared to other African nations, best standard of living, highest education standards and best health system, corruption was low, religiously tolerant of all and provided you didn't complain about the person running the government you were not going to be harassed. Now economy is struggling to rebuild, corruption is rife and infrastructure badly damaged with standard of living having dropped markedly.
Egypt - religiously tolerant progressive and one of the leaders in Africa/Middle East in trying to seek peace agreements between waring nations/ and civil wars, with the rarest of things in Africa/Middle East an independent press. Now problems with religious violence, economy nearing collapse, any dissenting voices silenced. No longer cares about rest of Africa and only staying involved in Palestinian conflict because of necessity.
Ukraine - overthrown democratically elected government because pro-Russia, installed puppet pro-EU government which has never been properly elected and immediately recognised it despite no election being held. Refuse to accept annexation of Crimea (which was Russian anyway prior to donation to Ukraine administration during Soviet era) which was done in an election, like it or not getting over 75% in a vote was a given no matter how the election was held and everyone knows it. Now have civil war in parts of the country and a government that is no interested in providing any assistance to any ethnic Russian areas. Corruption still rife
Syria - pro-Iranian government that whilst religiously tolerant did have issues with Sunni minority and Kurds (but then almost everyone in history has had problems with the Kurds) with a healthy economy. Now racked with civil war involving various groups including religious fundamentalists of the worst kind who have no tolerance for any with differing beliefs of their own, to the point of enslaving them or execution.
So whilst we say we've got rid of these terrible governments and have sent support to do so, the support (if any) we are sending to get rid of what has replaced it which is in almost all cases far worse than what was ousted is much less. So who is really the oppressor of the developing world?
