Amazing coincidences in football

The North Melbourne Football Club resides in which suburb of Melbourne?

North Melbourne.
That is actually rare. Even historically Collingwood was based in Abbotsford, Carlton was based in Carlton North/Princes Hill, and so on.

Port Adelaide at Alberton, Adelaide at West Lakes, West Coast Eagles (nominally Perth) at Subiaco, Fremantle at Cockburn

Hawthorn have never lost a GF when they've played on the 27th of September
Hawthorn have never lost a GF when Olivia Newton-John has sung the national anthem
Coincidentally, neither have Fremantle.

Or Gold Coast.

Or GWS.

Spooky!

Well, not necessarily, we've never lost a grand final in October.......granted we've never played one either.

In fact, I think only Collingwood have won grand finals in October.
Collingwood has actually won more flags in October than September (8-7).

Although we've lost 6 October GFs as well.

Since losing it's second flag in 1975 Hawthorn has backed up by winning the premiership within 2yrs of every subsequent grand final loss.

1975 lost to North Melbourne ---> 1976 Premiers (1yr)
1984 lost to Essendon ---> 1986 Premiers (2yrs)
1985 lost to Essendon ---> 1986 Premiers (1yr)
1987 lost to Carlton ---> 1988 Premiers (1yr)
2012 lost to Sydney ---> 2013 Premiers (1yr)

Actually that is pretty weird.

2005 Sydney finish third and win premiership.
2012 Sydney finish third and win premiership.

2006 Sydney start year 0-3 and make the GF
2014 Sydney start 0-3

Wrong. They were 1-2 after 3 (beat Adelaide).

In 2000 in the SANFL, Central District and North Adelaide played each other with Central winning 183-46.

Also in 2000, again in the SANFL, Woodville West Torrens and Glenelg played each other with WWT winning 167-30.

Both happened in Round 9 and both margins were 137 points.

Central and WWT would play off in the GF, Central winning by 22 points (not 16 unfortunately). North and Glenelg finished bottom two.

Didn't he deliberately take his dad's number? In that case the number isn't a coincidence. The years still are though
Yeah ha. I don't think he realizes that there is a 38 year gap between the events. Another coinkidink!

High-scoring games producing a match aggregate score of 300 points or more have become very rare in the AFL, with only 3 from 2000 onwards, with the most recent time in Round 10 2003.

Amazingly, the last 7 of such games have all included North Melbourne, as follows in reverse chronological order:

Rd 10 2003: Nth Melbourne 24.12-156 d Bulldogs 22.13-145 (301)
Rd 16 2001: Essendon 27.9-171 d Nth Melbourne 25.9-159 (330)
Rd 3 2000: Nth Melbourne 27.8-170 d Richmond 20.14-134 (304)
Rd 22 1995: Nth Melbourne 30.24-204 d Fitzroy 15.11-101 (305)
Rd 6 1993: Nth Melbourne 35.19-229 d Sydney Swans 16.9-105 (334)
Rd 1 1993: Nth Melbourne 24.22-166 d Brisbane Bears 22.11-143 (309)
Rd 13 1992: Geelong 29.18-192 d Nth Melbourne 17.13-115 (307)

One has to go back to Round 9 1992, where Geelong demolished Essendon 28.13-181 to 17.22-124 to find a 300-point aggregate game not involving the Kangaroos.

On the subject of high-scoring, Melbourne has never had a score of 200 points or more, but was in the highest scoring game of all time (345 point aggregate), where St Kilda won over Melbourne 31.18-204 to 21.15-141, in Round 6 1978.

This 1978 game is the first and to date only time St Kilda has kicked a score of over 200-points, and while it is somewhat ironical that it was against Melbourne which has never achieved that milestone, it gets really freaky when the Bulldogs also kicked their only 200-point score in history in 1978. And this 33.15-213 to 16.10-106 demolition job at the Western Oval was against St Kilda!

The following year the luckless Melbourne conceded the highest score to date 36.22-238 to Fitzroy, losing by 190-points. While the margin still stands as the greatest, the score was beaten by a point in 1992, when Geelong kicked 37.17-239 to defeat the Brisbane Bears (Fitzroy's future merger partner) by 164 points at Carrara. In the 1979 game, Robert Walls played for Fitzroy and Greg Wells for Melbourne; while in the 1992 game Walls coached the Brisbane Bears, and Wells was the Cats' assistant coach/runner.

Melbourne's highest score was 28.14-182, scored twice against North Melbourne in 1986 & 1991, and their highest score in a quarter of 12.2-74 was not kicked in any of these high scoring Demons' matches, but against GWS in 2013 by a struggling Dees' team that won only 2 games for the season.

So, Claremont Tigers is the pintle that holds all things together.

Wonder what other shenanigans they've been at the indirect center of.

In another coincidence, in both 1991 & 2011, the Claremont Tigers went on to take out the WAFL premiership, defeating the Subiaco Lions on both occasions.

I'm sensing if you keep scratching this 'claremont tigers' surface you'll find more and more amazing coincidences. The veritable butterfly effect.

There are a few more involving the Claremont Tigers:

Claremont has played in the WAFL Grand Final in the same year as its Tiger cousins Richmond & SANFL team Glenelg on quite a few occasions, but aside from 1934 (Richmond and Glenelg premiers) these Tiger teams have never won the flag the same year. In 1940, Claremont defeated South Fremantle, and Richmond lost to Melbourne in the most recent final played between these teams to date. In 1972, both Richmond and Claremont lost to Carlton and East Perth respectively, and in 1981 Claremont won over South Fremantle while Glenelg went down to Port Adelaide. There was a hat-trick of Tiger losses in the 1982 Grand Finals, Richmond, Claremont and Glenelg losing to Carlton, Swan Districts and Norwood respectively. Richmond have not made the Grand Final since then, but Claremont and Glenelg both lost again in 1990.

More coincidences exist with the VFL/VFA Tigers, Werribee, where Werribee's only premiership to date in 1993 was achieved in the same year as a WAFL premiership as Claremont, the Tigers savaging the red and blue teams of West Perth Falcons and Port Melbourne for big GF wins. Claremont and Werribee have made the Grand Finals of their competitions on two other occasions in the same year, Claremont winning and Werribee losing to Dandenong in 1991; while both Claremont and Werribee were beaten in 2005 by the South Fremantle Bulldogs and the Sandringham Zebras. And when Coburg changed its emblem to Tigers thanks to an alignment with Richmond (which has since ended, with Coburg becoming the Lions again), both Coburg and Claremont were defeated in the 2007 grand finals by their feline cousins, Geelong Cats and Subiaco Lions.

Now for the freakiest one of all, back to 1964. In the VFL, Collingwood Magpies look to have their GF against Melbourne Demons in hand, leading by 2 points with virtually no time left on the clock, and in the WAFL, the East Fremantle Sharks lead Claremont by 2 points with seconds to spare in the Grand Final. Then Melbourne score an amazing goal to win the 1964 premiership, and across the Nullabor, Claremont do the same to defeat the Sharks, the Demons and Tigers celebrating their premierships with 4-point wins. In Adelaide, South Adelaide don't give their supporters heart-failure in a 27-point win over Port Adelaide. To this day, Melbourne and South Adelaide have not won another premiership, while Claremont has won eight more. And Werribee entered the VFA the following year, taking 28 years to win a premiership, with no more since.
