I hope we don't start giving knighthoods to our sports people. I think community recognition awards should be given to people who make a difference in the lives of others. When it all comes down to basics, a cricketer is basically an entertainer, and it really doesn't matter two hoots whether 'Australia' wins or loses. It's sad that people talk about Michael Clarke's 100 against the Saffies as a an 'Inspirational' moment - which of course it was, but only in the sporting sense. Just being good at your chosen job doesn't qualify (this goes double for every long-term Public Servant currently lining for their gong).

If we are giving them to sportspeople, we need to give them to other entertainers - Reality TV stars etc - more people watch and are interested in Masterchef and MyKitchenRules than the cricket. The bloke involved in cricket who should get the recognition is the volunteer who has been running the local club for years for no funding and putting in his spare time.

Oh well - just my opinion, and I don't set the criteria.
