Toast Ash McGrath Retires

I know the Miracle on Grass is hard to top, but my number 2 memory of Ash would be that monster rolling goal in the 2003 preliminary final against the Swans.
Great call. And the ball stopping just over the line as a Swans' defender raced back to goals. Also 2005 when he was our go to forward.

The miracle on grass will go down in Lions folklore with McGrath's goal the stuff of legend.

Thanks for everything Ash :thumbsu:

One of my memories I will always have was the look on Chis Scott's face when he saw the ball in Ash's hands...he knew that he was in big trouble.

I have been an Ash fan from the start through thick and thin...you won't find a single negative Ash post from me in the achives...great career Ash and thanks.

Here is the 2003 goal a few people have mentioned (go to 1:02:08):

The best part of 75m great goal, nice pluck for the smother too.

It was nice when we just bombed long to our big key forwards, Lynchy throwing guys out of the way.

Love Boonj, very good up front and down back, and even had a few years where he had spurts in the midfield and a great guy to boot. Still my favourite memory is bumping into him at the pornography store that used to be across the road from the Gabba while waiting for our pizzas

A few have already mentioned it but that goal against Sydney in 2003 was a beauty. He had a great career that lasted 14 years, played over 200 games, won a Premiership and was a match-winner in a lot games over the years. Hopefully Brisbane can get a win for him on Sunday.

God I remember that 'book exchange'.

My sister was a young Ash's property manager and had to call the club to discuss the state of the place Ash was living in. She got a personal apology call from Leigh and all.

great career reckon he could have played a role next year as well but good to see him go out with a farewell match and as part of the same changing of the guard as Browny in particular.

on a side note having just watched abotu 3 different miracle on grass youtubes even in the space of 12 months our team has changed unbeleivably.

Brown, Black, Moloney, McGrath retired. Yeo has left, Lisle gave off a couple of great handballs in that last quarter and hasn't had a look in this year, Rich and Leuenberger missed the whole season. Golby (who goaled in the last quarter) has missed the second half the year. Staker took a big mark on the wing for one of the goals and hasn't been sighted since.

thats 10 players without thinking too much about it (and only 1 GH5 member) from that team who've barely played this year.

Didn't like him when he played down back in the early days, but I think that was Leigh teaching him he had to have a defensive side. Didn't think he would make it, or at best would become "just" a player, but he threw a lot of egg in my face & made me eat it as well. I'm glad he did, he became one of my favourites & though he hasn't played much in the last couple of years, it will be sad to see him go. He stayed & gave his best, & for that, a big thank you!:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Docherty was also playing, haven't seen much of Vossy this year as well...

Congratulations on a stellar career Ash. At the end of the day as a player your greatest hope is to extract out every bit of potential and talent through out your career. This can be applied to Ooh Ah without a doubt. Thanks for all the memories and enjoy your retirement.

Another one retires:( Congratulations on a great career Ash! He was always one of my favourites and I will miss watching him play. He will go down in Lions history for his 200+ game, loyal service and obviously that goal after the siren in his 200th game. It is a sad day as the last of our premiership heroes retires. He is a legend of the club and deserves to be sent out as one so kudos to Leppa and the rest of the coaching staff for giving him a send off game. Everyone get to the Gabba this Sunday to farewell Ooh Ah Ash McGrath and see him slot a couple of final goals. I know I will!
