Ask a Communist

The promise of capitalism is when everyone starts a game of monopoly.... everyone is equal and everyone thinks they have an equal chance of winning..... which in essence they have until the dice is rolled.
But at the end of the game ther is only one winner....... what sucks is everyone in that game still thinks they can win....even when bloke who has the all the hotels always wins.....
Remember...... buy buy buy bye bye....

Yeah and when communists play it there are no hotels built and the water works goes to s**t.

Privatising it works heaps better hay,,,,,
Generally not, but privatisation isn't analogous to the current water situation present in many countries under democratically elected "capitalist" governments.

Capitalism is fine when its regulated ..... but corporate capitalism is another problem...

No argument there. Capitalism is far from perfect. But if you were look at the track record of capitalist versus communist countries I know where I would want to live.

Maybe communist could create a utopia but no one can seem to tell me how to create one and how it will not turn out like all the other communist countries (both current and former).

If you're really lucky you will get a response along the lines of "none of those/these countries were really communist".

Consider Cuba was able to survive as a nation from the 1950's onward, in spite of having its resources cut off from the rest of the world./

How long would America last if it wasn't allowed to trade with the outside world? One week?

Cuba survived 60+ years, that speaks volumes for socialism.

Can you name a well regulated capitalist society that didn't result in economic catastrophe or war?

So what? I bet the infrastructure there is terrible compared to leading nations and that their choice of goods is vastly limited in comparison too.

Because the capitalist empire stopped them from trading.

It is a matter of the strong picking on the weak, not an endorsement of capitalism over socialism.

If anything it proves that socialism is far more resilient than capitalism.

As for infrastructure, their medical infrastructure is world class. Likewise, they still use cars from the 1950's and have been able to upgrade them to work on modern oils and fuels. Most cars in America are in the junkyard after ten years.

In fairness manboob, the other nations in the Latin American ' hood, those who DID embrace the Will of Washington (Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras especially) aint no shining examples of progress either.

Those countries did not embrace capitalism. The US conducted disgusting covert operations including horrific violence, torture and rape in order to undermine and destroy their successful socialist societies.

There's alot of ignorance in this thread in terms of how the West has waged a war on third world countries when they've not embraced capitalism or neglected to look after imperial interests. This ignorance becomes especially annoying when people say there have never been successful implementations of communism or socialism. There have been, ESPECIALLY in South and Central America.

Strong picking on the weak? If communism was a much better system why weren't they strong enough to fend off outside influences?

Yeah those free elections in Cuba were great.

So why do people leave Cuba for the US and not the other way around?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_Cuba

I would copy the facts that the education system doubles as indoctrination, the restrictions on freedom of assembly and the political repression yet whenever I past the relevant section it comes across as crossed out.

A 2009 report by Human Rights Watch concluded that "Raúl Castro has kept Cuba’s repressive machinery firmly in place...since being handed power by his brother Fidel Castro."[26] The report found that "cores of political prisoners arrested under Fidel continue to languish in prison, and Raúl has used draconian laws and sham trials to incarcerate scores more who have dared to exercise their fundamental rights.

Freedom House classifies Cuba as being "Not Free",[27] and notes that "Cuba is the only country in the Americas that consistently makes Freedom House’s list of the Worst of the Worst: the World’s Most Repressive Societies for widespread abuses of political rights and civil liberties."[28]

A 1999 Human Rights Watch report notes that the Interior Ministry has principal responsibility for monitoring the Cuban population for signs of dissent.[29] In 1991 two new mechanisms for internal surveillance and control emerged. Communist Party leaders organized the Singular Systems of Vigilance and Protection (Sistema Unico de Vigilancia y Protección, SUVP). Rapid Action Brigades (Brigadas de Acción Rapida, also referred to as Rapid Response Brigades, or Brigadas de Respuesta Rápida) observe and control dissidents.[29] The government also "maintains academic and labor files (expedientes escolares y laborales) for each citizen, in which officials record actions or statements that may bear on the person's loyalty to the revolution. Before advancing to a new school or position, the individual's record must first be deemed acceptable".[29]

The opposition movement in Cuba is a widespread collection of individuals and nongovernmental organizations, most of whom are working for the respect of individual rights on the island.[30] Some of the best known Cuban members of the opposition include the Ladies in White (recipients of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought), Martha Beatriz Roque, and Nobel Peace Prize nominee and Sakharov Prize winner Oswaldo Payá, as well as Oscar Elías Biscet, and Jorge Luis García Pérez "Antúnez." The movement is violently repressed by the State despite its nonviolent strategy for change.[31]

International human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have drawn attention to the actions of the human rights movement and designated members of it as Prisoners of Conscience, such as Oscar Elías Biscet. In addition, the International Committee for Democracy in Cuba led by former heads of state Václav Havel of the Czech Republic, José María Aznar of Spain and Patricio Aylwin of Chile was created to support the civic movement.[32]

Interesting little quirk don't you think? It's not crossed out on the wiki...

Either the way this is a utopia isn't it Coup? Who wouldn't want to live here?

You'd have top be an idiot to ignore the vastly different situations in post colonial China and post reovlutionary Russia and say it was entirely about the system, rather than the relative strengths of the west vs the east and the latin world at the time.

In a vacuum socialist armies tend to fight a lot better, and socialist economies tend to perform a lot better.

******* lol... The former USSR propped them up for decades and when that fell Russia did the same. Only in July this year Russia wiped 35 billion in debt that Cuba owed.

I really don't think you're grasping the entirety of my argument.

That's just it; there is no entirety of an argument present. You just go around making snide remarks like the above and being elusive.

You would make a good continental philosopher...

Capitalism is the best motivation for productivity..... but its also allows that productivity to be abused by greed.
Striving for complete Equality is a waste of time because its never going to happen.... The best I hope for is a society that can reward its self by providing everyone an opportunity to better themselves through Education... rewarding people on merit and not the inheritance or where they were lucky to be born.
Education, health and providing affordable housing is the key to secure any community.

Capitalism is going to kill itself eventually unless it is controlled. Corporations are now becoming stronger than countries.... I cant see that ending well?

Our obsession with GDP growth whilst ignoring sustainability will eventually hurt us too.
