Is set to be named pretty soon and should give a pretty good indication of how the selectors rate the current youth.

Nobody in the Ashes squad will be selected so I would be pretty surprised to see Nevill in the squad. Likewise I feel that for someone like Adam Voges, he either players in the test team or he plays for Middlesex. There would be no point bringing him into the A squad.

In my opinion Glenn Maxwell should be in this squad.

How would it work for players who are on the fringe of the Ashes squad? Probably best course of action is to be named in the A squad and if you get selected for the Ashes you obviously withdraw from the A tour.

Could work out a bit stupid to not pick fringe players in the A tour. If they then miss Ashes tour they don't go on any tour...

I'd say that anyone not named in the 16 or so man squad for the ashes will come under consideration.

Just read they are naming the Windies and Ashes squads Tuesday morning so that all makes sense.

Still think that is awfully early to be naming the squad? There isn't much cricket to be played between now and then so the only thing that should change their minds between now and then is injury. I would have thought just name the Windies squad, then Ashes after.

The other consideration may be County contracts. The feeling may be that someone who misses the Ashes squad but has a Conty stint may be better off in England in case they need to be called into the squad. Having played in the conditions, rather than in India, maybe be seen as better preparation in case of a call up. On the other hand, we need guys to have long form experience in Asia - where Australia is generally diabolical.

Australia A squad to play India A in four-day matches: Usman Khawaja (c), Matthew Wade (vc), Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Joe Burns, Patrick Cummins, Andrew Fekete, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Nic Maddinson, Glenn Maxwell, Stephen O’Keefe, Gurinder Sandhu,

Disappointed by the lack of Whiteman and Maxwell

Maxwell is in there. Strangely he's not in the one day Australia A squad though.

Australia A one day squad
Usman Khawaja (c), Matthew Wade (vc), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Cameron Boyce, Joe Burns, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Patrick Cummins, Callum Ferguson, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Chris Lynn, Gurinder Sandhu, Adam Zampa.

Why is it strange that one of our best ODI players would not be in the Australia A side?

I do think it odd that Faulkner isn't in the four day squad, though.

He is in there. Good.

Just woke up so my mind isn't functioning well just yet.

Maxwell isn't in the one day squad because he's an established member of the senior team.

You'd think so, but I'd prefer to see Maxwell playing FC cricket than ODIs for the next couple of years. He and Faulkner are too talented to not make an impact in Tests at some point.

Travis Head, Ashton Agar

That's my stab at a batting order, at least.

Not a bad squad - would have thought Whiteman maybe get a gig.
They must not rate him enough as a batsmen to take him as a specialist bat, seeing as we have 2 bats in there who can keep (Handscomb, Bancroft).

With Nevill and Wade (possibly Hartley) presumably still ahead of Whiteman, would it be better for him to drop the gloves possibly altogether?
Because if Bancroft and Handscomb were still keeping, I'm not sure they would have got picked for this squad.

Yeah, but Bancroft and Handscomb are s**t keepers.

Whiteman just turned 23.

Why would he quit the gloves when he is a good keeper and he is six years younger than Nevill?

No reason to Whiteman to drop the gloves. Good keeper, good batsmen. Still young.

Probably not quite good enough to make it as a batsman to be honest. And if a good chunk of our young batsmen actually fulfill their potential (based on the last 6 years that is very optimistic i know) then Whiteman will most likely find himself a long way down on the batting pecking order.

I'm just thinking of a way that he can move his way up the pecking order, not necessarily saying he should.
Handscomb has just had his best shield season when not keeping. This could be a result of focusing more on his batting.

Also, I reckon if Handscomb was keeping this year he would not have got picked for the A squad, even if he had the same batting stats without keepign.

But Whiteman is actually a good keeper and only merits consideration as a keeper.

Are Handscomb & Bancroft really that bad keepers? I haven't really seen Bancroft keep, bits of Handscomb I thought he kept fine.

Yes Whiteman only merits consideration as a keeper atm, but he can't even make an A squad as a keeper atm, hes 4th in line.
Say he dropped the gloves and it improved his batting (like it did for Handscomb), he will have a lot more chance to push for higher selection. Instead of being stuck behind Nevill and Wade for the best part of 5-10 years.
