Given the lack of experience in the side, reckon they'll go for Ed Cowan to replace Rogers. He's got a reasonably decent opening record with Warner.

They'll bring someone young into the middle order to replace Voges, with a view to bumping them up to the top once they have some experience.

Personally I think Cowan got the tap on the shoulder by selectors and told that he probably wouldn't be selected again.

I'd be sad if that was the case. He's probably the only other batsman in the country capable of doing Rogers' job right now, and at 33 he'd be a decent stopgap.

After being of the view that it would be bad for Bancroft to be the next opener, I'm now convinced. Great foil for Warner as well. I'm more than slightly concerned he hit a 6 however.

The BCCI website has Bancrofts total as 150 from 267 balls and not 150 from 167 balls as cricinfo has it.

I trust the BCCI stats in this case

Now been adjusted on cricinfo.

Not entirely sure that Bancroft will be ready by the Australian summer, would be surprised if he played.

As an opening batsmen myself. It really is a specialist position.

Talk of putting in a middle order bat (aka Burns) in a view to opening down the track is just silly.

Bancroft to open

Yeah, I think Burns should come in to replace Clarke. If the selectors are reluctant to pick Cowan, then Bancroft could well be debuting fairly soon.

No, he's not capable of doing as good a job as Rogers.
I didn't say as good, although Rogers struggled to convert his starts for a long time too. The Warner-Cowan opening partnership averaged something like 44, which is still pretty bloody good. I honestly can't see any other batsman coming in after Rogers and being similarly reliable at the top of the order.

With how weak and inexperienced our middle order is right now, we really need to maintain a solid opening pair to protect them. IMO Cowan is the only real option in the interim.

Burns did open for Queensland last season and did pretty well. Apparently it's his preferred position.

EDIT: Made ~800 runs at 53, with 2 tons and 4 fifties. Not bad for someone who's "not an opener".....

I can't see Marsh being successful long term as an opener. He failed at Shield level there. But the selectors always want him so I'll bet he'll get first dibs.

Well if he comes in at 5 and succeeds I'd move him to 4 when Pup is gone. Burns to 5 or opener.

I'd hope the selectors noticed that the improvement in his form at Shield level seemed to coincide with his move to the middle order.
They probably didn't.

If the selectors have any brains they'll put a gun to Rogers head and tell him he's not retiring

I was listening to Rogers interviewed after the first innings and you can't help wonder what on earth he and Warner have to say to each other at all. Like a Martian and someone from a galaxy near the Dogstar trying to communicate.

I think he'll still retire. He said that he can't play night tests due to his eyesight. Fair enough.
