Australia Test squad - 2015

I think this is probably the best XI given the conditions. It is difficult to leave out Starc though. I like the two all-rounders because I feel the competing batsmen are only of similar ability.

By competing batsmen, do you mean Voges, Watson and Mitch Marsh? I can't see in what world 2 all-rounders are necessary. Voges isn't an all-rounder, he's a handy part-timer like North was.

I think their thinking (even prior to Rogers' injury) was

Warner
S.Marsh
Smith
Clarke
M.Marsh
Watson
Haddin
Johnson
Hazelwood
Lyon
Ahmed

Ahmed and Lyon didn't do much to advance that course in the warm up match.

Unless it's a massive turner don't expect us to play two spinners.

Even if it is a massive turner, I wouldn't be playing two spinners. On just about any deck the strength is in the pace attack. Even without Harris.

Given the squad, I owuld probably go soemthing like:
Warner
S Marsh
Voges
Smith
Clarke
M Marsh
Haddin
Johnson
Siddle
Hazelwood
Lyon

Marsh and Voges at 2 and 3 would be a concern, but I'm not sure about Smith at 3. I'm much more comfortable with him ciming in a little later with a little less movement around. He and Clarke are also the only proven players of spin.
If Rogers was fit it would probably be S Marsh at 3 and Voges at 6 with no all-rounder. Smith and Voges can fill in with a few part-time tweaksers if necessary.
Siddle had a great Shield season so gets another crack. Ahmed also had a great season, but I'd back Siddle ahead of him at Test level.

I expect to see
Warner
Watson
S Marsh
Clarke
Smith
M Marsh
Haddin
Johnson
Starc
Lyon
Ahmed

Watson and S Marsh might change positions but I get a sinking feeling they will play two spinners and try and balance the pace attack by playing two medium pace all-rounders. Although, it doesn't make sense to pick Voges for the squad and not play him - so hopefully he comes in for one of the al-rounders.

The selectors will not have the balls to make a decision on the all rounder. We need more than 4 specialist bats ffs. Voges is a much better batsman than both Watson and Marsh (and Haddin). As if either could score half the runs in a shield season Voges just did. Just give the guy a go already. Just because he's 35 shouldn't make a difference.

There's a point with all rounders where they can only bowl so many overs and you may as well just pick an extra batsman. Five bowlers and a couple of decent part time options (Voges, Smith etc) is more than enough. Don't even pretend Mitch or Watson are similar ability with the bat as Voges and the other guys just outside the team. It simply isn't true.

I like

S Marsh
Warner
Smith
Clarke
Voges
Watson
Haddin
Johnson
Starc
Lyon
Ahmed

Especially if the pitch is as grassy and dry as reports are saying

I could see that happening. But Hazlewood may sneak in based on that tour game.

For some reason I get a suspicion they could go in with Ahmed-only. Would be a surprise though.

Voges has to play.
They have to drop Watson though? As Mitch Marsh is the better bowler and batsmen at this point (Watto is cooked)

1.Warner
2.Rogers (inj) - S. Marsh
3.Smith
4.Voges
5.Clarke
6.M. Marsh
7.Haddin
8.Johnson
9.Harris
10.Hazlewood
11.Lyon

At this point in time that is simply the best side we have. Rogers and those batsmen and Haddin and Mitch Marsh are our best batting line up. And then S.Marsh is our next best Batsmen so thats how it has to go.

If only the selectors have sense

Harris isn't in the squad. Your options are Siddle, Starc or Ahmed.

I just read the article on cricinfo.

Based on it they're actually considering a team of

1. Warner
2. S.Marsh
3. Smith
4. Clarke*
5. Watson
6. M.Marsh
7. Haddin+
8. Johnson
9. Lyon
10. Hazlewood
11. Ahmed

That's almost the worst possible lineup they could select.

Siddle isn't in there. Not quite the worst.

I'll be pretty annoyed if Voges isn't in the team because we want to play two spinners.

I just can't understand the concept that we should play two allrounders if we play two spinners.

If they're confident in the two spinners than why do we need a second allrounder and if they're not confident in the spinners then why select two?

**** it, let's play Neville in place of Smarsh. That way there is two wickies, two all-rounders and two spin bowlers and two quicks. Perfect!

Me neither, we played with 4 bowlers for years in Warney and Pigeon's heyday. Of course they could be both stock and strike bowlers and could bowl a shitload of overs but it's still odd. If you can get 15-20 overs out of Watson we don't need the other all rounder, in the second dig it should be mainly the tweakers bowling anyway.

I would only play both Watson and M. Marsh if we play 2 spinners. I feel the extra quick is probably required if you lose the toss and bowl first.
