Ballarat Dragons Finish 2012 Season in 10th Place
06/08/12

The Ballarat Dragons have finished the 2012 season in 10th position after finishing the season strongly. Severe injuries to several players at the beginning of the season saw the Dragons languishing near the tail-end of the ladder for the majority of the season, however three straight wins to round out the season saw them leapfrog several teams.

The season is definitely considered a success given that the club recently relocated to the North Ballarat Oval and re-branded as the 'Ballarat Dragons'. The loss of several key players at the end of the 2011 season definitely hurt the club short term, however the influx of new talent has left those involved at the club feeling positive about the club's future. Players of the ilk of Chad Wingard, Luke Brown and Sam Darley all made their AFL debuts and showed promising signs for a bright future. Rookie Tom Simpkin also had a breakout season to cement himself in the Dragon's backline.

The Ballarat Dragons will again be looking to the 2012 off-season to strengthen their future, with the club particularly keen to snare young talent. Despite finishing 10th, the Ballarat Dragons will receive the 7th overall pick in the 2012 National Draft due to penalty points incurred by teams below Ballarat on the ladder. This pick should ensure that the club picks up yet another quality recruit.

Ballarat Dragons Re-Sign Key Players
10/10/12

The Ballarat Dragons have made their first off-season moves by re-signing several key players. In a sign that the club is heading in the right direction, Brendon Goddard, Chad Wingard and Luke Brown all signed contract extensions while three rookies were promoted to the senior list.

The major signing of Dragon's captain Goddard will mean that Brendon is contracted to the club until 2015. The defender/midfielder had a solid 2012 season, finishing 2nd in the club's best and fairest award after averaging 97.3 points per game.

Chad Wingard and Luke Brown both enjoyed their first ever season in the AFL and showed promise of much to come. Wingard, the 4th overall pick in last year's draft was particularly impressive in his 19 games for the Dragons and has signed on until 2015. Although Luke Brown only played 3 games in his debut season, he showed enough to suggest he will be a long term fixture at the Dragons.

In further good news for the club, Tom Hickey, Tom Simpkin and Brett O'Hanlon have all been promoted to the senior list for the upcoming season. Tom Hickey impressed the Dragon's as a raw but talented ruckman and has signed a three year deal that will keep him at the club until 2015.

Key defender Tom Simpkin had a break-out season in terms of consistency and has signed a two year deal while forward Brett O'Hanlon showed enough promise in his 8 games to be promoted on a one year deal.

The Dragons will be looking to continue adding young talent to the list through both the trade and draft periods, with the club currently in possession of the 7th overall pick in the National Draft.

Busy First Day of Trades for Ballarat
24/10/12

Ballarat have started the trade period with a bang, completing a total of three trades on the opening day. All three trades involved had a strong focus on the future with the club managing to acquire the services of several young players as well as upgrading one of their draft picks.

In the Dragon's first trade of the day, Ballarat traded veteran key defenders Heath Grundy and Luke McPharlin to the Launceston Plovers for midfielder/back Sam Docherty and key forward Todd Elton. The club is under no illusions in expecting the two young players to perform as well as the departing pair, however it is believed that in the long term Sam Docherty and Todd Elton will be able to provide more to the club in a period when the premiership window may be more open.

A trade with Melbourne saw Ballarat pick up a further two young players with Anthony Miles and Jacob Townsend arriving at the club at the expense of veteran midfielder Andrew Embley. Both Miles and Townsend have just completed their first season in the AFL and have plenty of improvement ahead of them. Although it was sad to see Embley leave the club, it was thought that it was best for both parties to let Andrew leave to a club that is pushing for premiership success.

In perhaps the biggest trade for the club, Ballarat Dragons have secured their key position stocks for the future by trading in key forwards Sam Day and John Butcher for James Frawley and Leigh Adams. As part of the deal, Ballarat also swap their pick 46 pick for Brisbane's pick 23. Both James and Leigh have been solid contributors to the club over the years, but once again the Dragons felt that the team would be best served by securing two of the more promising key forwards in the game.

By these trades, Ballarat have made their intentions clear that the club is still looking towards the future and will be continually looking for ways to bring in young talent while further strengthening their position in the upcoming draft.

Brad Helbig Arrives in Ballarat
3/11/12

Ballarat have completed their 4th trade in this off-season by sending veteran Adam Schneider to Launceston in exchange for Brad Helbig and pick 53. The trade once again signifies Ballarat's strong youth policy, with Helbig only just completing his second season in the AFL. Helbig is a tough as nails midfielder who struggled with injury this season and is likely to improve vastly in the upcoming 2013 season.

Adam Schneider leaves the club after five highly successful seasons with the team. All those involved at Ballarat would like to wish Adam all the best in his future AFL endeavours.

Last Day Trade sees Garlett and Polkinhgorne depart Ballarat
17/11/12

The Ballarat Dragons have completed a shock last minute trade by off-loading both Cruize Garlett and James Polkinghorne to Gippsland in exchange for Sam Wright. As part of the deal, Ballarat also upgrade their pick 53 to pick 30. The trading of Polkinghorne is of particular surprise as until recently, the management team at Ballarat had been giving every indication that Polkinghorne was a part of the club's long term plans.

While Ballarat would have been more than happy to keep Polkinghorne on their list, it seems the opportunity to pick up Sam Wright and upgrade their 4th pick in the draft seemed to much to pass up. As a result of this trade, Ballarat now have four picks inside the top 30 in the upcoming National Draft.

Ballarat Picks up Four Youngsters
15/12/12

Ballarat Dragons have further bolstered their young playing stocks by selecting four players in the National Draft. Ballarat entered the draft with picks 7, 23, 24 and 30 and used these picks to select Jackson Macrae, Taylor Garner, Jed Anderson and Tom Clurey respectively.

Of the four players selected, Macrae was the most highly touted upon entering the draft, with the young midfielder/forward able to rack up the disposals where he can use his sublime evasive skills. It's expected that Macrae will play several games for the Dragons in his debut year, where he will team up with fellow first round draft pick Chad Wingard in providing class and skill around the stoppages.

With picks 23 and 24, the Dragons were able to add further to their midfield stocks by selecting Taylor Garner and Jed Anderson. Both players have shown a real ability to find the ball in their junior careers and given time, both are expected to be solid contributors for the Dragons over the coming years.

With their 4th and final pick in the 2012 National Draft, the Dragons shored up their young defender stocks by selecting key defender Tom Clurey. Throughout his junior career, Clurey has made a habit out of shutting down his opponent. Over time however it is expected that Clurey will be able to add a bit of attacking flair to his game by providing run and carry from the backline.

Overall, the Ballarat recruiters are very happy with how the draft has panned out and expect all four players to fit in well at their new club and are excited to see the youngsters form part of the team that will take the Dragons back into the upper regions of the ladder in future seasons.

Ballarat Finalise List for 2013
28/01/13

The Ballarat Dragons have rounded off their list for the upcoming 2013 season by selecting one player in the pre-season draft and three players in the rookie draft.

With their first and only pick in the pre-season draft, the Dragons shored up their ruck stocks by selecting the very tall and promising youngster Jake Spencer. Jake had been overlooked in previous drafts but his strong performances in 2012 saw him leap onto the Dragons sights. At age 23, Spencer will play the role of backup ruck for the Dragons and will be given time to develop as a player.

In the rookie draft that followed immediately after the pre-season draft, the Dragons selected backman Josh Tynan and Jack Hutchins as well as forward Jacob Gilbee to finish off their list for the 2013 season. All three youngsters have shown glimpses of their potential but as of yet have failed to really string any games together. All three players are 20 years or under and as such are not expected to have a huge impact in the upcoming season. However, the success of last year's rookies, where a total of three rookies were promoted at the end of the season, leaves the Dragons confident that with a bit of luck, someone on the rookie list will have an impact on the upcoming season.

The selection of all the three rookies as well as the young Jake Spencer have resulted in the Dragons now possessing one of the youngest lists in the league. Brendon Goddard, James Podsiadly and Chad Cornes remain as the only players on the Dragons' list who are above the age of 25 years old.

Ballarat Dragons Pre-Season Runners Up
22/03/13

The young Ballarat Dragons list has shocked many by placing second in the 2013 pre-season competition. The Dragons were led by senior players Goddard, Van Berlo and Pearce on their way to a 2-1 record. The result was a pleasant surprise for coach fightingfury_88 who was more interested in finding out which players might be worth a shot in the season proper.

Many of the young players impressed during the pre-season hitout, but perhaps none moreso than Rohan Bewick. The young forward managed to rack up the possessions as he played more through the midfield than in previous seasons. The two top drat picks over the last two seasons, Jackson Macrae and Chad Wingard, also showed signs for the future with stints up forward and through the middle. Jed Anderson was also impressive for the club in his role through the middle of the ground.

The pre-season form has set the Dragons up for a competitive season for 2013 and with a list full of young talent is sure to improve. The club may be focused on developing the list for future seasons, but with the likes of Bewick, Wingard and Macrae waiting to break out, perhaps that development may come sooner than expected.
