Ballarat clash sure to be gold
IN THE mid-1800s, two crucial parts of Australia’s history emerged - football and the gold rush.
When thousands of people descended on Ballarat with gold fever, it seemed only natural that Australia’s new pastime would also grow in the area.
And so in 1860, after the formation of both the Melbourne and Geelong football clubs, a third club - Ballarat - was formed.
Ballarat didn’t graduate to the big leagues but still retains its role as part of the foundation of the sport.
These days it remains a force in the Ballarat Football League under the guidance of former AFL coach John Northey.
In community football round on May 10, Ballarat meets North Ballarat City – which produced the game’s greatest goal kicker Tony Lockett and dual premiership coach Mick Malthouse.
The club derives from the North Ballarat team that was admitted to the VFL in 1996, and has commenced its first year in the Ballarat Football League as North Ballarat City.
Club president Paul Leahy says the club is looking to establish its identity in the region after spending two years in the Bendigo Football League.
"We’re the new kids on the block and we used to have quite a rivalry with Ballarat," Leahy said. "In 1996 we lost our pathway but we are back on board now."
North Ballarat stars Mitch Jenkins, Adam Richardson, Cameron Richardson and captain Matthew Doyle will be a handful for the home side, which will have extra incentive to perform on the big day.
"We haven’t won a senior flag since 1988 and are having our flag reunion that day, so we are expecting to get quite a turnout," Ballarat president Shane Manley said.
"We’re having two little league games on at half time and hoping to get three of our former players - Drew Petrie, Nathan Brown and Mitch Brown - back to the ground.
"It’s fair to say it is going to be a big day."
