Bean Dailey Takes Charge: Season 2008

Wonaeamirri, Spencer, Zomer, Valenti - who do we promote to the senior list for Rivers?
I like the look of Austin Wonaeamirri, exciting young small forward. Has the makings of a cult figure, and could attract supporters looking for a team to follow.
However, I feel Dailey will want a more mature body and will promote Shane Valenti.
Spencer is still raw and needs some time to develop.
The less said about Zomer, the better.

Good to see you're thinking ahead: there will be a post about list management in the next few days.

Player Contracts
Our list manager, Tom Herringbone, analyses the list each season and assigns each player a monetary value. As the season continues, he sounds out each player manager and finds out what they and their player is thinking. Obviously, this being the start of the season, not many players are thinking of contracts just yet, but as the season continues a few will start to talk to their agents about trying to get a new deal. As Tom negotiates with the agents, he’ll bring us offers that he thinks the players will accept. Longer contracts will generally have a lower per year figure because career security is worth a fair bit to a player. The closer to the end of their contract, the more desperate players will get and we can offer them lower contracts. But a player’s value can change based on their performance, so a developing youngster might be asking for more at the end of season rather than midway through.

There are only two players who have asked their managers to have a chat to Tom: Nathan Carroll and Trent Zomer. Nathan Carroll is asking for either a one or two year contract of $62,800. That’s a small slice of the salary cap, relative to what others would demand, but he’s not exactly a key player. Trent Zomer is happy to take the minimum AFL wage of $50,000 for an upgrade off the rookie list next year. I don’t think re-signing either player is a high priority at the moment. There’s no need to make a decision just yet,

We do need to make a decision on who will replace Rivers on the senior list from Spencer, Zomer, Valenti and Wonaeamirri. I think we can discount Spencer straight away: he is young, inexperienced and extremely light for a ruckman and has shown very little in the Sandringham reserves. Another option is Zomer, who at first glance is an unco, ungainly tall thin lad who only switched from basketball to football a year ago. A second glance confirms the first. Valenti is your stock-standard VFL mid: workmanlike, always willing to do the team thing, racks up disposals, good strength and passable disposal. He isn’t going to win a Brownlow, but we could do with a solid citizen in our midfield with Moloney, McLean and Sylvia all capable of tearing a game apart but showing little inclination to do it on a regular basis so far this season. He can also go forward and snag a few goals, which is where we’d likely start him if he was to get an AFL berth. Wonaeamirri is almost the opposite of Valenti, a livewire forward who doesn’t seem to have the attitude for the top level but just keeps kicking goals. His fitness is appalling and I don’t think you’ll ever see him turn down some turtle in favour of an extra lap at training, but sure can kick goals. He started off the in the Sandringham reserves but kicked 3 bags of 4, then got a promotion to the seniors, was completely lost for two rounds and then kicked 3.7 and 5.1 in two games. He was quiet again last week and currently can’t run out more than 2 and a half quarters at a time, but yeah… he can kick goals.

So there are a few questions for you to answer for Bean: do we give either Carroll or Zomer a contract yet, and who do we upgrade for Rivers?

No to Mullet Carroll and ZOMGer as Supermercado used to call him. Neither are needed IMO.

Upgrade Aussie for me. Gives us something different in a tired forward half.

The thing is with a young inconsistent team, do you want a player that is lazy but will sometimes produce some magic? Or a player who will work all day. I'd upgrade Valenti over Aussie at the current stage, wouldn't offer wither Carrol or Zomer contracts yet though.

Valenti. No good putting Wonaeamirri up if he can't run out a full game. However, I reckon Wonaeamirri will be a star of the future and a player people will name their BigFooty usernames after.

Well then, Wonna it is.

After five rounds, Bean and his assistants have produced an update of how the playing list is travelling:
1.Simon Buckley – games: 2 (pre-season: 1), ave disp: 14.5
Came into the side off the back of some excellent form at Sandringham. Has done his job with a minimum of fuss and done well both defensively and with ball in hand. Needs to polish disposal and improve his tank to get more of a run in the midfield but is looking like holding his spot from what we’ve seen.

2.Nathan Jones – games: 5 (pre-season: 4), ave disp: 20, tackles: 15 (ranked 1st at the club), clearances: 16 (2nd), marks: 31 (3rd), inside 50s: 15 (3rd)
Has been a very solid player for someone in just his third year. Consistent and does the hard things well, has worked really hard to cut out awful disposal errors, and even won a game off his own back last week. Definitely one to watch for the future.

3.Clint Bartram – games: 2 (pre-season: 2), ave disp:15
Has worked hard to improve his fitness and attacking game with a little success, but in both games has let his opponent get the better of him. Needs to continue cutting out the clangers and continue to shut down his man.

4.Ben Holland – games: 5 (pre-season: 3), ave disp: 13.6, goals: 6 (1st), marks: 24 (8th)
Only 6 games away from 200 and doing enough to keep his spot at the minute. Provides versatility, bulk (something we really lack at both ends of the ground) and experience. Needs to keep throwing his weight around and kick a few more goals to see the year out.

5.Brock McLean – games: 5 (pre-season: 3), ave disp:19.2, tackles: 14 (2nd), clearances: 10 (5th)
Entered the season off a shortened pre-season having had surgery on his ankle in the off-season, and seems to still be struggling. His fitness is right down and he’s spending as much time on the bench as Jeff White. Taking that into consideration, his numbers per game time aren’t all that bad, but he is struggling to impact games the way we know he can, having only really come to the party in round 2 against the Dogs. Whether we persist and hope that his tank improves, give him a run in the magoos or a rest completely is something we’ll need to consider.

6.Matthew Bate: – games: 2 (pre-season: 4), ave disp: 17, injured.
Was a real contributor before his injury and his absence has hurt our forward line. Good at both distributing ball to forwards and being a target himself, we’ll need to assess whether we bring him back through Sandy or rush him into the senior side, with Petterd covering his role fairly well.

7.Brad Miller – games: 1 (pre-season:2 ), ave disp:12, goals: 3 (7th), ave inside 50s: 5 (2nd), injured.
Has kicked a goal per quarter played this season. Unfortunately, he’s only kicked three goals. Hard to judge based on such a small window, he but presented well and used it well in the time that was given to him.

8.James Frawley – games: 5 (pre-season: 3), ave disp: 21 (4th), minutes: 395 (1st), marks: 32 (1st), rebounds: 31 (2nd)
Has taken the mantle of primary defender with aplomb, stopping almost every opponent thrown at him and rebounding with flair. It says something about the state of our midfield at the moment that a key defender is 4th on the possessions list, but it is also a glowing endorsement of such a young player. Has shown remarkable resilience with just 5 minutes on the bench so far this season, and might need to shoulder even more of the burden with Rivers going down last week.

9.David Neitz – games: 4 (pre-season: 1), ave disp: 10.25 (6th lowest), goals: 3 (7th), tackles: 13 (4th), inside 50s: 12 (5th), clangers: 10 (4th), frees against: 8 (1st)
Has had a pretty rough start to the year. Injured for most of the pre-season and missed another game and a half through soreness. His output has been well down and possessions and goals are not coming easily for him. Still giving his all, however, and there are signs it’s starting to turn around for him. Needs to continue to improve and stay injury free in order to serve out the year with dignity, or even push on into a 15th season.

10.Cale Morton – games: 5 (pre-season:3 ), ave disp:24.6 (1st), kicks: 77 (1st), clearances: 12 (3rd), marks: 30 (4th), rebounds: 6 (6th), clangers: 10 (4th)
An incredible debut season, leading the possession count and racking up 25 and 30 disposals a game without problem. The fact he has an enormous tank for such a young player means that he makes more contests than anyone else, even allowing him to sneak a few clearances later in the game, which he has no right to do given how light he is. Needs to improve his disposal and continue to work hard on his impact, but is really showing why we took him at number four in the draft.

11.Paul Johnson – games: 2 (pre-season: 2), ave disp: 10 (5th lowest), ave HO: 8.5 (4th)
Has really disappointed when given the opportunity, giving us little up forward and even less in the ruck. Looks a step above at VFL level but really disappointing in the big league. Needs to show big improvement in order to take back the 2nd ruck role.

12.Colin Sylvia – games: 5(pre-season: 3), ave disp:20.8 (5th), goals: 5 (2nd), handballs: 48 (3rd), inside 50s: 15 (3rd), marks: 25 (7th), frees for: 11 (1st), clangers: 11 (3rd)
Has had two stunning games, one good one and a couple of mediocre outings in his customarily frustrating way. Is playing primarily as a forward flanker but gets a moderate amount of time in the midfield. His good is very good and he has done a number of game-changing things, but really needs to apply himself to get to the next level and do it consistently.

13.Adem Yze – games: 5 (pre-season: 3), ave disp: 15.2
Really struggled as a forward flanker early on and couldn’t get his hands on it or run out games. Was approached to play more of a Mr Fix-it role and despite initial hesitance has grown into it. Now has limited game-time but uses it well and plays his part. Needs to continue to prove his worth to hold his place.

14.Lynden Dunn – games: 1 (pre-season: 2), ave disp: 6
Has been tried as a tagger and utility across the pre-season, round one and Sandringham but failed to deliver in both roles. Needs to show more at Sandringham than he has since being sent back there to get anywhere near a game.

15.Ricky Petterd – games: 3 (pre-season:1 ), ave disp: 22.7 (3rd), inside 50s: 21 (1st)
A revelation. Quickly become our chief architect of forward entries. Good hands and doesn’t seem to make many mistakes, provides some forward pressure and threatens around goals. Could probably be a little more selfish and try and kick a few himself, but has cemented a spot in the 22 very quickly.

16.Jack Grimes – games: 0 (pre-season: 2)
Got a couple of runs in the pre-season and showed a respectable ability to get the ball, use it well and keep it away from his man. Has slowly built up at Sandringham and if he continues, will be pushing for a senior game before long.

17.Chris Johnson – games: 1 (pre-season: 2), ave disp:17
Shone as a rebounding defender at Sandringham for a number of weeks before finally getting a call up. Looked flustered at senior level in his game last week but still managed to get a lot of it. Really needs to work on his composure to secure a spot.

18.Brad Green – games: 5 (pre-season: 4), ave disp: 17.8, goals: 4 (4th), rebounds: 7 (5th), inside 50s: 14 (5th)
Has been thrown around the park a bit, playing wherever he’s been needed, and perhaps hasn’t settled as a result. Isn’t really starring in games but has been a dependable and solid team-first player, plugging holes and stopping gaps where they’ve appeared and stemming a flow of goals or kicking a few himself when they’ve been most needed. Is disposing of the ball excellently and has taken a few younger players under his wing. Perhaps not one of out most prolific players, but probably one of the most influential.

19.Addam Maric – games: 5 (pre-season: 2), ave disp: 11.4, goals: 4 (4th)
A real impact player. Often goes missing for a quarter or two each game but whenever he gets his hands on the ball something happens. If he can apply himself throughout a game and work hard on consistency while limiting his opponent to less than 20 touches (something he has struggled with on occasions), he could really make a place for himself in the team.

20.Colin Garland – games: 4 (pre-season: 3), ave disp: 14.3, rebounds 6 (6th), injured.
Has been another young defender who has shown a lot of promise, holding both big and small players while getting a lot of the ball himself. Seems a very good decision maker and showed immense courage on more than one occasion. Should be a part of the back six for many years to come if he can keep this up.

21.Daniel Bell – games: 3 (pre-season: 2), ave disp: 12,
Was tried as a negating back/mid without much success. Did little to curb his opponents while offering little rebound. Hardly a sound user of the ball, either. Will need a good showing at the Zebras.

22.Brent Moloney: – games: 2 (pre-season: 3), ave disp: 14.5
Scarce statistics so far this year and just doesn’t seem right. Is carrying a fair bit of weight in an attempt to improve his clearance work but just looks slow and too easily caught. Didn’t react well to being dropped to Sandringham, either. Needs to buck up and show a bit in the VFL before he returns, because he is well short of his best at the moment.

23.James MacDonald – games: 5 (pre-season: 3), ave disp: 20.6 (6th), clearances: 18 (1st), tackles: 14 (2nd), inside 50s: 16 (2nd), clangers: 14 (1st)
Outstanding performance from an incredible warrior. Not only does he do a job on the opposition’s best mid each week, but he also burrows under packs and is always looking for a way to get the footy forward. His style is workmanlike and so is his disposal, but he’s led the midfield admirably and is one of the first chosen each week.

24.Russell Robertson – games: 4 (pre-season: 4), ave disp: 12.3, goals: 5 (2nd), handballs: 4 (3rd lowest), inside 50s: 12 (6th)
Has struggled a little bit this year, like many of our forward line fixtures of previous years. Wasn’t kicking or setting up goals and was sent back to Sandringham for a week, but responded with style and 11 goals. He returned and looked much more confident last week. Needs to continue to show what he’s capable of to keep his place in the side going forward, with a number of youngsters snapping at his spring-heels.

25.Kyle Cheney – games: 0 (pre-season: 1)
Is developing pretty well for a late pick last year. Needs to continue to show improvement if he wants to grab a game or two before the end of the year.

27.Jared Rivers – games: 5 (pre-season: 2), ave disp:21 (4th), handballs: 62 (1st), rebounds: 12 (3rd), clangers: 10 (4th), out for the season.
That’s all we’re going to see of Riv-dog this year. And it’s a damn shame because he was really showing the sort of form that saw him hailed as one of the great up-and-coming defenders early in his career. There are few better defenders to have under a ball in all the league, based on his four and a bit games this year, and we hope to see him back next year with much the same attitude and aptitude.

28.Isaac Weetra – games: 0 (pre-season: 0)
Is still very early on in his development. Showed a little bit in his first few games of VFL, but needs a lot of work.

29.Michael Newton – games: 2(pre-season: 1), ave disp: 18, goals: 4 (4th), ave clangers: 4 (1st)
Got his lucky break With Bate, Miller and Neitz out of the side and took his opportunity with both hands (with both hands, about 2m off the ground and kneeling on Bret Thornton’s shoulders). Is erratic, to say the least, but shows some willingness to provide defensive pressure and tries his heart out. Will be fighting it out with the likes of Holland, Miller and Neitz for the two or so key forward roles.

31.Paul Wheatley – games: 5 (pre-season: 2), ave disp: 20.4 (7th), kicks: 71 (2nd), tackles: 10 (5th), rebounds: 34 (1st)
Is having a real Indian Summer thanks to a niggle-free pre-season and is very popular with the young defenders. Reads the play so well and still has that booming kick that gets us out of trouble in a jiffy. Is enjoying the mentoring role he’s been given with Garland and Cheney and looks to have his spot in the 22 sewn up for now.

32.Cameron Bruce – games: 5 (pre-season: 4), ave disp:24.2 (2nd), tackles: 10 (5th), rebounds: 10 (4th), clearances: 12 (3rd), clangers: 13 (2nd)
Has played the majority of the time on a wing and has been thrown back whenever we’re under siege. Racks up the possessions, hunts down the ball and is one of the few players who can play at A-grade level for more than a few games a year. A genuine leader around the club, he just needs to stop kicking those floaters that put his teammates under pressure and he’d be unquestionably our best player.

33.Stefan Martin – games: 3 (pre-season: 1), ave disp: 14.4, HO: 32 (2nd)
Another break out player, he came in off the back of some solid, if not spectacular work in the VFL, mostly as a forward, but was thrown into the ruck to sink or swim and paddled around happily on debut. He even showed up PJ in last week’s game and can play forward or back (although he hasn’t exactly excelled in either position yet). Is a genuine chance to hold down the 2nd ruck role for a little while until either Jamar or PJ can show some good form, an extraordinary outcome for a big project player in just his second year.

34.Jeff White – games: 4 (pre-season: 2), ave disp: 11.3 (7th lowest), HO: 79
Still by far our best ruckman now in his 13th year, White continues to dominate tap work, even if he isn’t as mobile as he once was. He works hard with the younger rucks and its clear he’s close to the end, but he keeps giving his all for the club. Will he still be our best ruckman at the end of the year? If so we’d better hope he’s willing to go around again next year.

35.Trent Zomer (Rookie) – games: 0 (pre-season: 0) In negotiation.
Has one haul of four goals at Sandringham and has certainly shown potential. Obviously needs more work, however.

36.Aaron Davey – games: 2 (pre-season: 3), ave disp: 9.5 (4th lowest)
Very disappointing from Flash so far this year. He just hasn’t seemed to be able to get his hands on it and hasn’t really looked like kicking a goal. His kicking is as good as ever but he seems to have lost a yard of pace somewhere along the way and his tackling is down. Isn’t in our best 22 from the display so far, and didn’t look great in the VFL, but he has shown signs in the last few weeks of getting back towards what we think he’s capable of.

37.Matthew Warnock – games: 0 (pre-season: 1)
Has struggled to get a look in with so many of our defenders doing a good job, but with injuries mounting and his strong form at the Zebras, we might see him sooner rather than later.

39.Austin Wonaeamirri (Promoted Rookie) – games: 0 (pre-season: 0)
Was promoted on to the senior list off the back of 16 goals across four weeks at various levels of the magoos. His fitness isn’t great, his defensive efforts are nothing to write home about and his work ethic is questionable. But he kicks goals, that much is undeniable.

40.Mark Jamar – games: 1 (pre-season:2 ), ave disp: 6 (lowest), HO: 9 (4th)
Got one game in the seniors for little return. Really can’t afford not to take his chances with the 1st ruck role probably up for grabs at the end of the season and the field wide open. Needs to continue to improve in the VFL and really grab his opportunities when they come.

41.Nathan Caroll – games: 0 (pre-season: 2) In negotiation.
Did little of note in the pre-season and didn’t impress early in the VFL, but has strung together a couple of good games. Needs to continue to press his case there and show that he’s worthy of a spot.

42.Jake Spencer (Rookie) – games: 0 (pre-season: 0)
Miles off being ready. Has struggled in the VFL reserves against bigger opponents.

43.Jace Bode – games:0 (pre-season: 0)
Has surprised as a decent running back at the Zebras with a number of eye-catching dashes down the wing. Still needs to tighten up defensively to be a chance of seeing senior action.

44.Shane Valenti (Rookie) – games: 0 (pre-season: 0)
Wasn’t far off securing a promotion to replace Jared Rivers on the senior list and has had a number of solid performances at Sandringham, leading them in possessions and clearances. There are still questions about whether he offers enough to make it at AFL level, but he is a very solid VFl player at the least.

45.Matthew Whelan – games: 2 (pre-season: 3), ave disp: 8.5
Has really struggled early this year and just isn’t himself. We gave him a rest from the VFL last week so hopefully that will freshen him up. Lacks energy and drive, his kicking has been poor and isn’t keeping his opponents as quiet as he used to. A long way off the senior team on form.

If Logger can develop Cale Morton I say we make him head coach of the MFC.

Have a look at the first page of his thread in the Change Rooms. He is tracking well under Dailey but we need to ensure he keeps his confidence up and help him develop to his full potential.

Preview Round 6

Friday April 25
Magpies Vs Bombers (MCG): Collingwood are flying, having thrashed North and solidified their place in the top four last week. Just a change of coach has seen the Bombers soar up the ladder, but they will need to be on guard against the league’s most potent attack. A win here could see them climb as high as second on the ladder.

Dockers Vs Cats (Subiaco): A change of coach hasn’t been quite so great for the Dockers, sitting outside the eight on percentage. They have been at their most inconsistent, with thumping given and received at home and abroad. They may well be facing more of the same against the rampant Geelong Cats, undefeated and unruffled by all their opponents so far this season.

Saturday, April 26
Blues Vs Crows (MCG): Two teams desperate to kick-start their season. The Crows were supposed to be making the finals this year but with one win from five attempts and little resistance shown in any of their defeats, they look a long way off the pace. At least they have a win this year, however, unlike Carlton. Despite showing patches of fight in each of their games the Blues are yet to get on the board and they seem destined for yet another season of pain.

Bulldogs Vs Eagles (Telstra Dome): Still yet to play anything resembling four quarters of football, the Dogs find themselves 2% outside the top four and at an interesting crossroads: if they can unlock the secret to finishing off games they will become extremely hard to beat. The Eagles are the team keeping them out of the top 4 and despite a long injury list and punishing schedule so far they continue to win, and win well, having dispatched Port to the tune of 88 points last week.

Power Vs Saints (AAMI Stadium): Speaking of Port, are they in a world of pain or what? Second last on the ladder and with defeat margins of 119 (in the Grand Final), 27, 120, 7 (in the Showdown) and 88 points. Just the one win to speak of isn’t the way they would envision things going after their prelim win last year. The Saints are just the one spot above Port and for a side that promised to challenge for the premiership this year, they are failing miserably: impotent up forward, leaking like a sieve down back. This game could be quite exciting, if only to see which side is more awful.

Sunday, April 27
Lions Vs Demons (‘Gabba): The Lions finally got on the board last week against a woeful Hawthorn, while The Demons secured their second win against a spirited but skill-less Carlton outfit. Neither side looks terribly impressive on paper, but both have shown plenty of heart, despite being beaten most of the time. This game will go some way to determining if either can challenge for a spot in the finals late in the year.

Kangaroos Vs Swans (Telstra Dome): At opposite ends of the table and with the second worst attack coming up against the very best defence, this looks to be the easiest round of the year to tip. Sydney has been extraordinary, with a percentage of 185% and veterans and youngsters alike combining to shake down the thunder from the sky. North, meanwhile, has been less than convincing even when it has been able to challenge teams (a rare occurrence). Prepare for (the) blood(s).

Hawks Vs Tigers (MCG): Hawthorn have been disgraceful at times this year, and at others barely acceptable. On the other hand, the Tigers have stunned most with four wins in a row to start off the season. Both suffered disappointing losses last week, both will want to atone this week. The Tigers can take another step on the way to showing they are a legitimate challenger this year, the Hawks can go one step towards atoning for their start and getting their year back on track.

Last week's team:
Code:
FB: C.Johnson - Frawley - Bartram
HB: Wheatley - Rivers - Morton
C: Bruce- McLean- Green
HF: Sylvia - Newton - Petterd
FF: Holland- Neitz - Robertson
R: P.Johnson - McDonald - Jones
Int: Martin - Yze - Buckley - Maric

Emergencies: Moloney, Jamar, White, Grimes.

In terms of our team, Jared Rivers is a definite out, given he can't move his legs for the next 4 weeks. PJ was poor, Bartram couldn't close his man down and had just 8 effective disposals and Maric only touched the ball 7 times for a haul of 1.3. Chris Johnson got his hands on it a lot but also had some bad brain fades.

At Sandringham, Jack Grimes played a good game again in the midfield, playing more of an outside role than previously. Lynden Dunn took over his tagging role and didn't do a bad job of it, while Nathan Carroll held his opponent goalless despite the Zebra's going down by 40 points. Matthew Warnock was also pretty good, while Davey showed the first signs all season of his old self.

From the rehab group, White is now breathing properly and has no lingering effects from his broken nose, while Colin Garland has progressed better than expected and the doctors say he is physically fine to play, though he has only had the one full training session this week, which he passed with no trouble. The question on him is match fitness after a week and a half out.

Remember, we also now have Austin Wonaeamirri to come into the team if we want, though he didn't do a lot on the weekend.

As a starting point, how does this look?
Code:
FB: C.Johnson - Warnock - Garland
HB: Wheatley - Frawley - Morton
C: Bruce- McLean- Green
HF: Sylvia - Newton - Petterd
FF: Holland- Neitz - Robertson
R: White - McDonald - Jones
Int: Martin - Yze - Buckley - Maric

OUT: P.Johnson, Bartram (omit) Rivers (pelvis)
IN: White, Garland, Warnock

Emergencies: Grimes, Dunn, Carroll, Wonaeamirri
On Notice: Garland (pending fitness), C.Johnson, Maric
So:
  • Should we risk Garland?
  • Warnock in to play on Brown, Frawley to Bradshaw, Garland to Brennan? Or should we bring in Carroll as well/instead of one of those or C.Johnson.
  • Has Maric done enough to keep his place in front of Wonna?
  • Do we bring in Grimes after two pretty good games in the VFL midfield? If so, for who?

Give Maric another crack, four shots on goal is a decent starting point. Wonna to continue producing good form in the VFL.

I think the midfield looks a bit light on too, with the listed bench not providing much in terms of genuine rotation options. Maybe Moloney or Grimes to come in for a flanker.

Bit surprised by the inaccuracy of Maric, I mean we recruited partly because of his TAC cup record goal accuracy of 85%, to see 1-3 on the board, questions his real worth to the side.
