Tackles, tackles, tackles.

The big improvers this year are the Doggies - and just about every time I hear one of their young players speaking about their team focus, it's all about tackling.

Considering we're ranked last for disposals so far we should have plenty of opportunities to tackle. And yet there have been so many instances I've seen when an opposition player cuts between two Carlton players, who then proceed to look at each other like they're not sure who was supposed to tackle the guy.

The answer - you can both f***ing tackle the guy!

If we're gonna lose games, so be it, but I want to make the opposition hurt in the process. Get Whiley into the side ASAP, seems like the kinda kid who likes the physical stuff. We know Clem likes to hit blokes, but he's lacking the pace at this point to catch them in the first place, so give him a spell. Boekhorst apparently has the pace for the game, just not the tank, so give him the vest next round and see how he goes. And if Gibbs doesn't have the composure to clear the ball with anything but a blind bomb around the body, give him a mandate to crunch as many blokes as he can at every stoppage - he's got a big frame, time to stop floating around the outside like a seagull.

There's only one tactic I want to see and that is play on football.

If Murphy reckons fitness is not the issue then it shouldn't be a problem. In both games so far after quarter time the players have gone into their shells and played kick to kick footy whereas their opponents have played on continuously.

It's pretty simple and it's called work ethic. Play on and space opens up putting the opposition on the back foot. If the players don't have the confidence to back their skills doing this then they should * off and play local footy somewhere up the country.

Murphy to wing Attack
Simmo to wing defence
Judd as center
Casboult at goal shooter i supose
Dont know who will be goal attack, maybe hendo but he could be goal defence too
Jamo as goal keeper

Get rid of this tagging BS we will be near the bottom of the ladder this year so might as well teach some of the young boys how to win the footy. Tagging 3 to 4 of the oppositions players and losing by 10 goals just seems pointless. Tagging only works if u are a chance to win the game!!!

Less rushed kicks & long kicks to contests, more handball & short passes. I'd like to see Carlton work harder to retain possession. We're winning the ball & giving it to the opposition at the moment
BNS - I tend to agree - we look very ordinary without the ball so perhaps we should work on getting more of the cheap ones - uncontested possessions
we tend to lose the uncontested possession count quite badly at times and I wonder if anyone has access to stats regarding our F50 entries in relation to our uncontested possession count

We are a team without an identity right now, we need to run and gun more, kicking to the boundary constantly hurts us.
Stick tackles, move the ball quicker and handball/play on sometimes.

Yarran and Menzel need to rotate in the middle/wing more as well. They are game breakers.

Bold = When fit and free from injury.

It looks as if it is a form issue and lack of communication on the field.

Stronger communication and leadership.
Watson, Jamison, Jaksch and Rowe to gain back form and keep the opposition key forwards quiet.
Tuohy, Docherty, Simpson, Byrne, Sheehan, Buckley, Armfield and Walker (occasionally) to provide half-back run.
Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, Cripps, Bell, Whiley, Carrazzo to win clearances and make good decisions.
White, Everitt, Henderson, Watson and Walker to swing both ways.
Menzel, Bell, Thomas, Buckley, Tutt, Ellard, Smith, Gibbs and Armfield to apply forward pressure.
Curnow to stick by a key player to keep them quiet.
Watson, Rowe, Casboult, Jones, Henderson, Everitt or Foster to develop into a key forward and put goals on the board.
Warnock, Kreuzer and Wood to provide more than a rucking contest.
Holman, Viojo-Rainbow, Johnson, Giles, Dick, Boekhorst, Gowers, Walsh and Fields to get match experience in VFL and continue developing through their performances.
All players to stretch their game styles and improve their flexibility.

Not really a tactic, but I would LOVE to see that when a player has the ball and looks to kick it off that there are freakin' players to kick it to! If you go to our games this will annoy the hell out of you. Sick of seeing the players stand still whilst the player with the ball is desperately looking for options. Soooooo annoying!

Good Point NavyBlue5 - I would class it as a tactic but it goes hand in hand with moving the ball on by hand which speeds the disposal up and means that our guys are not manned up as much and therefore "their are freakin' players to kick it to!"
Not a big rugby fan but used to play as a kid - two things I think the Blues could learn from rugby:
- in rugby the quick play the ball is critical to good offensive tactics - get the ball moving before the opposition get ready - in our game a quick handball might not pay off every time but if it hurts us 20% of the time that's better than 50:50 contests by having to bomb to the boundary
- tackle around the arms but watch the hips - we need to be better at tieing the ball up and not being sold the candy - surely if Saverio can be brought down to help the forwards we could get an ex-Storm player to come and help out our tackling - Meb must know a few of the boys well enough to ask some favours?

I suspect that this is the other players acknowledging the game plan. Don't look for options, up the line you go. No risk.

However you have to be flexible. Having been involved in junior soccer, player run to position and call for the ball from a throw in, even though the coaches simple instruction was to throw it in tight up the line as it usually ended in another throw in to our advantage and we gained field position. The idea is that it clears out space so if we did retain the ball there are less defenders around as they let to go cover the players calling for it.

Some players will half heartedly make position but with no conviction and the opposition will concede the backward kicks. The idea is to have multiple genuine attempts to get free in front of he ball and in the corridor with a second wave making space behind that. Other teams do it against us whereas we struggle to think more than one possession ahead. Pull it of a few times and the opposition start second guessing. We need to be brave.

In: Armfield, Byrne, Walker and Cripps
and Rowe on the bench with rain forecast so maybe Buckley as a late change

Based on that I am going to claim that our poll has influenced the match committee
1) another clearance specialist in (Cripps)
2) 2 Tall back and forward and utilities as 3rd talls and speed at all cost (Armfield, Byrne and Cripps)

Now on Saturday we just need the boys to play through the middle and demonstrate their ability to thrill!
