I think this ties in with how the GF performance is dissected? To what extent was it a leadership problem and was that lack of leadership on field or in the coaches box?

I think the responsibility will be seen as widespread and therefore not a problem at captaincy level.

The coaching was dreadful. Longmire was supposedly coach of the year but he took the day off. He should have been down at the bench feeling the embarrassment, maybe he would have done SOMETHING.

But the onfield leadership was non existent. I don't remember one Swans player laying a tackle that said "back at you" or any player coming in to defend a smashed teammate. That was probably the worst thing, we acted like beaten dogs.

This!!!

Hodge said they respected us in his speech

Would think no where near as much after that game

Poor selections too (see Rioli/Simpkin, Langford/Sewell, McEvoy/Ceglar; bold moves = vindication for Clarko).

Bird (should've started him on Hodge like 2012 GF), Mitchell (hard nut), Laidler (100% effort) & ROK (Norm Smith medallist ffs) would've given us a lot more than Shaw (nothing special all year), Reid (unfit & only average when he was fit), Jetta (hasn't done anything since 2012) & Rohan (not hard enough).

Horse was playing favourites.

I personally think it is more of aside issue than anything to do with what just went on but Kennedy deserves his shot.

Can't see the point of co-captains to be honest- but whatever.

All the senior guys are media savvy. They all get training. They are fulltime football players - I am sure the captaincy doesn't eat into too much time especially when anyone at anytime can fill in for marketing.

I don't think it's a side issue. I think it can fundamentally be one of the main issues. Our leadership was non exsistent and really, it hasnt played a strong role for much/all of this year. Our captains were shite early in the year with our losses and didnt lift again on Saturday.

Why isnt Goodes captain...he is the 'spiritual' leader of the club now and has everyones respect and had a go on Saturday. Going forward JPK makes sense but not sure about selfless, follow me type of captain we need, but hopefully Parker can redeem himself and develop into that no holds barred do anything to win lead by example mongrel captain we crave. I have had enough of Jarrods finger pointing and lack of courage to put his body on the line....Jack had a bit of what we need but hasnt fired a shot really much this year.

There should be repercussions fo rthat performance, and maybe this is where they start.

Finger pointing and telling teammates to work harder. Fair enough, that's expected from the captains. But what about taking it up to the opposition? I didn't see Roughead getting roughed up by the leaders let alone anyone after he crunched Hanners. Who was there to remonstrate? Who was there to pick Hanners up and tell him good on you for being the only player to attack the ball with Roughead oncoming? Only player I saw dishing out any decent heat was Buddy. For crying out loud, he's playing against his old mates but still has the guts to take them on. Where was everyone else?

Bloody hell, so disappointed with how Jack & McVeigh went about it. Yeah, most of the team was crap but McVeigh only 11 disposals and zero influence? Jack with 2-3 opportunities to kick potentially team lifting goals only to be denied because he was unable to muster up a kick with his non dominant foot? How deflating must that be for the team.

Not saying they should be axed as captains or leaders, that's a far stretch but the GF was a poor leading by example and taking it up to the opposition display by McVeigh and Jack. If we're going to have co-captains we need a lead by example classy 'freakish skills' captain like Goodes (& after his lone hand GF performance, maybe even Buddy down the track) and also a physical, courageous, and in the opposition's face 'never say die tough' captain like Kennedy or maybe in the future, Parker. Hawthorn are damn lucky they have a captain in Hodge who has the all of the aforementioned qualities. Only player in our team right now that embodies the same spirit is Goodes. But at 34 years of age he isn't here to lead anymore. It's up to those in their prime years.

Probably a knee jerk reaction from me. But besides the ruck and defensive stocks, leadership is also an area we need to address this offseason.

i suggest jack especially go out and train

the weekend was not the first goal mess up this year because he is so one sided

Need to draft a few that kick both feet. We have a lot of players that are one foot specialists.

I think someone mentioned it in another thread but Jack did look really uneasy at the Grand Final Parade presentation with Hodge. Looked completely nervous.

I was going to open up a new poll about this, but then decided to do a search and bump this thread. I think we've gone down the wrong track with appointing Jack as a co-captain. McVeigh can certainly be frustrating to watch on-field (the pointing is over-covered on this board, but is not a good look at all), but he does provide leadership and obviously has a lot of respect from within the club. But I just don't see that with Kieren Jack.

I don't know whether McVeigh will stay captain until he retires, but either way, I think the next captain should be Luke Parker. I'm not just saying this because of his game last week, but have been mulling over it for a while. Even in games when he doesn't rack up possessions (which seems to be getting rarer and rarer), he leads from the front and leaves everything out there on the field. Does all the thing you want in a player, but all the things you want in a leader too.

But what impressed me most was the way he brought the team into a huddle at 3/4 time of the Fremantle match. He pulled them all in and gave a pep-talk, specifically pointing out the efforts of Sam Reid in getting us back into the game. Not only does that show leadership in providing inspiration to teammates, but that would have done Sam Reid the world of good, to get publicly encouraged for his form and determination. I can't imagine McVeigh or Jack (for VERY different reasons) doing that as well as Parker did.

Yes, he's still young, but this might still be a year or two down the track and he already seems to have the respect of the playing group.

Thoughts?

Keep your powder dry until at least after the game boys & girls.

The bump in this thread wasn't really timed for before the game, just that it was the first time in the week I had the time (and remembered) to post on bigfooty. I'm not calling for Jack's head on a platter, but just not sure if he's the right choice.

Also, the co-captains thing is a load of crap. It reeks of under 9s.
