News Carlton request Priority Pick - AFL Commission says NO - post #439

Our demise is not all our doing. Here is how the AFL have contributed and what I would be putting forward as an argument as to why we should receive compensation.

Draft Penalties. We were penalised the following picks:
1, 2, 31 and 34 in the 2002 draft, all draft picks in the 2003 Preseason Draft, first and second round draft picks in the 2003 draft.
Yes we brought this on ourselves by breaching the salary cap but we were made an example of and over penalised, particularly for a team in the position we were in. The penalty was more than draft picks and a massive financial wack. The penalty was that we would be terrible for a decade which brought about an enormous amount of lost revenue and diminished supporter base. This is why the punishment did not fit the crime. The punishment may also not stand up in court if it's ever challenged either.

Getting nothing for losing two free agents. We lost Waite who has had a fairly good season for North Melbourne and we received no compensation. We lost Betts and received no compensation as we picked Thomas up in the draft. Since Thomas has hardly played and not played well, it would be fair to say we got nothing for him and have gone the last two seasons uncompensated.

Compromised drafts. The AFL brought in two new AFL sides right in the heart of our rebuild. Right when we were on the up and getting lower picks despite requiring top end talent. Right in the tricky stage that would be the difference between us potentially rising to a top 4 side or bottoming out. Granted our drafting has also been poor but we would have had a far better opportunity to get things right had it not been for GWS and GCS having a bucket load of picks before us. Where this really hurts is with the Jacobs trade. We lost a good ruckman for nothing, granted we could have picked Parker with the pick we got but the list of good players available had GCS' not come in would have been much longer. It would have made it a fair trade. I think the impact of these clubs coming in, particularly the timing, has had a massive effect on us, similar in some ways to the draft penalties we received and we are not the only club who have copped a whack from this.

The AFL have brought in changes to the Father Son rule that will make it harder for clubs to bring in quality father sons. Seems all good and fair but again the timing affects us more than other sides if you look over the last 10 years and next 5 potentially. We are being put at an unfair disadvantage compared to clubs over the previous 10 seasons who have had access to quality father son picks.

If the AFL don't deliver a band one compensation for Kreuzer this is just another example of the AFL contributing to where we are.

Why we should qualify for compensation
- We are the worst side in the competition with only 4 wins.
- We have suffered at the hands of the AFL and the decisions they have made and the timing in which things were implemented. Perhaps far greater than most, if not all other clubs. The AFL have implemented programs that have negatively affected our efforts to have a quality list greater than some other clubs.
- Some of the AFL's recent changes, like the father son rule, could bring about an unfair disadvantage to us in comparison with sides over the last 10 years.
- We have lost a lot of quality players for nothing. Not just free agents Betts and Waite but Garlett who was traded for a worthless pick, Mitch Robinson and Jeremy Laidler who are all playing decent football.
- We are losing Henderson and Yarran for, at this stage unknown quantity, most likely unknown youth. Bell and Kreuzer could potentially be gone and possibly more. Judd and Carrazzo have retired. Not only are we the last placed team in the AFL but we will lose 4-6, maybe more players who are in our best 22. This makes 8-10 best 22 players gone for nothing in 3 years.
- Not only are we worse than Brisbane but we can argue we have been more unfortunate than them as they have generally not lost good players for nothing.
- We need more than the standard issue draft picks and what we may receive in trades and compensation to be competitive and rebuild within a reasonable timeframe.
- In 14 seasons: Last - 4 times, Bottom 4 - 6 times, Top 8 - 3 times + finals by default, 2 finals wins, not top 4 since 2000.
- The current state of our list is exceptionally poor.

We more than have grounds to apply for a priority pick. Just how much worse do we have to get? How long do we have to be really bad before the AFL decide that they are going to throw us pick?

I agree with most. But your forgetting we had 3 number 1 picks. Plus numerous others that didnt fruit. We are where we are due to the inept ability of leaders on and off the field.

But hey if the afl feels generous I would be all for a hand out.

Yep, definitely recognise that our drafting has been a problem, plenty of misses which we've gone over many many times here. Had we had an even playing field that many of the better teams like Hawthorn and Geelong have had during their build to success then perhaps we'd be better and wouldn't have fallen as hard. Things have been tougher for us than a lot of clubs out there. Over penalised at times and inconvenienced by timely rule changes along with our own ineptness to succeed at the business of AFL football. You also have to wonder, had it not been for our massive financial burden, would we have had quality people running the show who wouldn't have made the same mistakes. Financial burdens not only caused by mismanagement but from massive AFL fines and an enormous loss of revenue from lack of membership and attendances due to the situation we were put in where we were a bottom side for some many seasons. The AFL's enormous attack on us over the salary cap still hurts us. Lost members, lost support, lost attendances and the financial burden carried. Generally teams with money have quality people running the show. I could be wrong but, if that's the case that was one hell of a punishment handed out.

I think the AFL penalties stopped hurting us about the time juddy came on board. Only ourselves to blame since then. Poor executive leadership and a string of poor decisions re list management. Our culture never really understood the ' no quick fix' mentality until recently. I'm hoping that one day we look back on this period as a time of positive change, though it's going to be hard yards.

Losing players like Betts, Waite, Garlett, Robinson, Laidler and Lucas for nothing is what really kills your list management. The only player we got something for was Garlett and that was a token pick. Disgraceful and embarrassing. Then to top it off we trade for layers such as Jones, Tutt and Thomas.....This is what has hurt us this time.

Let's hope we get maximum value for trades from now on. We cannot keep being mr nice at the trad table. We are being laughed at by other clubs.

It was never going to happen.

No harm in asking though

New headline:

AFL announce that Carlton are not as big a basket case as the haters think they are so STFU.

 Grrr... don't remind me!! - I'm still choking at the *********** of this decision.
Throw in Hampson & Warnock being retained over Sam Jacobs and you really have to wonder if someone was being paid to do a hatchet job from within...

You just know Robbo is going to make the Headline. "Carlton deemed beyond saving as Priority Pick justly denied."

The word 'shameful' will be in there.
