Yes, that is the exact point. The player coming in doesn't have to be the direct replacement for the player going out. Apart from key position players and ruckmen, every other player is able to be moved around in order to play the best available and in-form team. The 'can't drop Charlie, no one in the 2's has the pace to replace him' is a very simplistic view of the selection process.
Agree, Good player player can diversify their skills and playing positions.
Good AFL coaches can motivate bad players to give a new position a go.
