Swift Swans destroy Inaccurate Pies

Sydney burst out of the blocks at the SCG and never looked back, recording a 29 point over the pies.
Collingwood tried to work their way back into the game but were not good enough for a ferocious Sydney defence that just kept forcing errors from the Pie forwards.

The Winning Coach's Verdict:

John Longmire:
A good win by us, the magpies dominated on the stats sheet but just couldn't convert it into a good score due to some brilliant defence by Ted Richards and Luke McPharlin. They (The magpies) have had a lot of personnel changes over the last year and if they begin to gel together as a team sometime later in the year then they will definitely be a threat.

Collingwood Reserves Report

Notable players:

Andrew Tomblin - 27 Possessions - 7 Marks
Jarrod Witts - 23 Possessions - 30 Hitouts - 5 Marks
Ben Kennedy - 21 Possessions - 3 Goals
Quinten Lynch - 9 Possessions - 6 Goals

Could 3 be the magic number for Andrew Tomblin? Two very good performances in the VFL might set up a debut for the star midfielder in round 3 of the afl season.
Jarrod Witts also impressed with 30 hitouts and might be considered for this week's game against the Gold Coast, and forward Quinten Lynch responded to being dropped with 6 goals to his name.

The game hates them unfortunately. :( Expect Mike Pyke to be injured in the next few weeks, leaving them without a decent ruckman. I've seen this happen multiple times with them.

Coaches Last Say:

Damien Cowan:
Last week was a poor loss as I believe we dominated the Swans all around the ground. We've changed some aspects to deal with the way we go about things in the forward line so i'll see if it works. We look a little tall but all of our tall players are very mobile and you just can't leave out a guy that kicked 6 goals in the VFL last week. (Quinten Lynch) - Our team isn't settled at the moment and we need to find the best balance that works for us, you just can't expect a team to have multiple changes in the off season then come out and dominate. We'll build chemistry in time. Andy Tomblin gets a debut tomorrow after some amazing performances in the VFL, this kid was on nobody's radar midway through last year and now he's racking up 30 touches in the VFL. I'm hoping for a good game from Andy tomorrow.
The Suns have a once in a generation midfield that will be the best in the competition in a few years time, we need to capitalize on their weaknesses that they have right now.

Guy McKenna:
We've had a good start to the season with two wins against Melbourne and Fremantle. We know that we've beaten the Pies once before so we're definitely going to have a crack at it again and make it 3-0.

Magpies to fear the Sun no more

Collingwood have recorded a 4 goal win over the Gold Coast suns in Brisbane on Sunday.
The Pies led all match and went to record their second victory of the season.
Dane Swan, Clinton Young and Paul Seedsman were the shining lights for the Pies and Clinton Young is becoming a key player in the Magpies 2014 premiership charge with 3 weeks of good performances.
Magpie young gun Andrew Tomblin recorded 8 disposals after coming on the field at 3qtr time, and will no doubt be starting next week.
The news of the night was Colin Sylvia being subbed off at 3qtr time with what seems to be a hamstring injury. Collingwood Club doctor Dylan Pickerill has said that it's nothing serious and Colin will only require a week off. Sylvia has been in amazing form in his start to the season with a new club, being Collingwood's leading goalkicker for the first 3 rounds.

Leading Possessions:
Collingwood: D.Swan 34, C.Young 32, P.Seedsman 30, S.Pendlebury 30, D.Beams 27
Gold Coast: G.Ablett 33, B.Matera 31, J.OMeara 21, H.Bennell 20, N.Bock 17

Goalkickers:
Collingwood: T.Cloke 5, C.Sylvia 3, B.Reid 2, Z.Clarke 2, C.Young 2, D.Beams 1, N.Maxwell 1, S.Pendlebury 1, A.Fasolo 1
Gold Coast: S.Day 3, T.Murphy 2, C.Dixon 2, D.Swallow 1, A.Hall 1, J.Martin 1, Z.Smith 1, H.Bennell 1, D.Prestia 1, M.Rischitelli 1

Hitouts:
Collingwood: Z.Clarke 17, B.Grundy 14
Gold Coast: Z.Smith 27, T.Nicholls 15

Injuries:
Collingwood: Colin Sylvia (Hamstring, 1 week expected. Subbed out at 3qtr time for Andrew Tomblin)
Gold Coast: None

Man of the Match: C.Young (Collingwood)

The Winning Coach's Verdict:

Damien Cowan:
Happy with the win tonight, Clinton Young is showing everyone why the club recruited him and Nick Maxwell seems to be relishing after having stood down from the captaincy, he is playing as a loose man across the defensive 50 and is even drifting forward to kick goals making an opposition forward having to man him up. I like our contested game at the moment and everyone seems to be going pretty hard at it, hopefully Col Sylvia is back soon as he's been a star pick up for us, and Andrew Tomblin will be definitely getting a full game next week as he proved tonight that he deserves it.

Collingwood Reserves Report

Notable players:

Liam Irvin - 28 Possessions
Marco Huley - 28 Possessions
Jamie Elliott - 20 Possessions - 2 Goals
Ben Kennedy - 13 Possessions - 2 Goals
Patrick Karnezis - 6 Possessions - 4 Goals

Liam Irvin has responded to seeing his fellow draftee having his debut, with a solid game in the VFL. Jamie Elliott has also pushed his claim to get back in the side after being omitted last week.

Alan Toovey to Return

Good news for Pies fans with the club doctor giving magpie defender Alan Toovey the all clear to return to the VFL after a year off with an ACL injury.
If 'Tooves' can get back to his best then it may just make the Collingwood side even more formidable.

Ladder after 3 rounds

zN6kGkx.png

The AFL ladder shows flag favourites Hawthorn once again sitting at the top with 2 convincing wins and a high percentage. Will having a bye in round 2 affect them in the long run as their players begin to get tired? Good player management will be required if they are going to have a major tilt at the flag.
The ladder also shows Richmond sitting comfortably in 9th position and Melbourne yet to record a win.
