Following the 2010 Grand Final victory, commentators were predicting a Collingwood dynasty with such a young and talented list.
Of the 23 players who participated in the draw and ultimate win a week later, this is what is left.
Can anyone recall such a fall from grace from a Premiership team to the current status within such a short space of time?

I'm not talking positions on the ladder (we all know the Hawks missed the eight in 2009) but how such a talented list could be torn apart, suffer injury or lose form as per above.

Umm we won a flag due to our gameplan, our side was never that good.
You say that now, but you only have to trawl through BF to see pages and pages on how player X is the new Judd, or Y is the new Ablett, etc.

The difference between Collingwood and other premiership sides is theirs was the youngest side to win a premiership in many decades. It looked like the natural consequence of their success being earlier than expected would be a sustained run at the top.

They went to the GF again in 2011 (their 2011 was even more impressive, it seemed like no one could get near them for much of the year) and top four again in 2012. Since then they have been mediocre.

A very different arc from Hawthorn in 2008, who also won earlier than many expected, but quickly plummeted out of the top four. Hawthorn had a mini rebuild with a mature core of leaders who won in 2008, and went back to back.

I doubt Collingwood will do this.

Everyone knew they were treading water before the Brisbane dynasty though. Collingwood were expected to do big things

I don't think it is all doom & gloom, they have had a lot of early draft picks which if they have nailed will see them back up in a couple of years but they definitely wont see finals in 2015.

I think it is simplistic to just look at the flag team, they were in the finals every year from 06 and went deep most of the those years, it is hard to stay up for a long time (TWSS). 2011 was probably one that got away against Geelong, I wonder if the Malthouse/Bucks rift was a factor but they were close to leading at 3/4 time from memory.

The recruitment of Lynch & Jesse White are the only things I would say they have stuffed up, losing guys like Shaw, Beams & Sharrod aren't bad at all given they are of questionable character. I'm sure Bucks wouldn't mind Swanny retiring as well to lose a few headaches!

It is a slight worry how many players have left seemingly on bad terms - which looks like the players don't like Bucks. But you'd rather the players now who is boss than having them tell the powers that be to sack a coach like Adelaide, GC & WB have done. And another way of looking at it, is they have made some tough calls to ensure they can compete for a flag in the future rather than being finals flops every year. One step back, two steps forward.

Perfect timing for Collingwood in 2010 and they pounced. Geelong had internal troubles with Bomber and Ablett dividing the group and the other big challenger being cut down with injuries and limping into the Grand Final.

Something went very wrong. Maybe it was Buckley, maybe it was something else but knows

They should have won 2011 as well

They got rid of Malthouse and the new coach tried to reshape the team. It was a very irregular strategy to employ for a team who just played in the GF. The turnover of the the list was more typical of a side that had bottomed out and got a new coach.

Just strange timing fueled by Eddies ego. If the Pies had of allowed Buckley an apprenticeship elsewhere and then brought him back to take Malthouse's spot when the side started declining then they would have seen a much better coach and quicker turn around imo.

Their list was and is still completely overrated. Malthouse is just very good at getting the most out of ordinary players whether it be his man management or the relatively safe and simple gameplan he implements.

Collingwood 2010 was the youngest premiership side since Hawthorn in 1978. They had amazing depth, a well-balanced list and everyone at the time felt they were about to start a Geelong-type dynasty. Remarkable how its all turned out considering the good sides have generally found it easier to remain on top over this period, with the compromised drafts not giving other teams a proper chance to rebuild.

You just had to look at the next year. Geelong should have beaten us by 7 goals in the first game, pounded us in the final rd and it was a 10 goal turnaround in the GF.
Hawks choked in the prelim, our gameplan had been dissected and was no longer of any use.
