Burns named captain, Pendlebury & Maxwell vice-captains

In a stunning turn of events, 19 year old Scott Pendlebury has been named Collingwood's vice-captain after just one year of AFL football. Scott Burns was rightfully named captain after serving under retiring captain Nathan Buckley for many years, while Pendlebury and Nick Maxwell were named his deputies. There was a huge list shuffle at the end of the 2006 season which saw the Pies bring in four players from other clubs and picked up another five AFL players in the preseason draft. Add to that the five youngsters that were selected and the Pies welcome a total of 14 players.

Collingwood obliterate Brisbane with youth

Collingwood has already caused a massive boil over in the preseason, defeating Brisbane by a massive 93 points and holding the Lions to just two goals after a goalless first half. It was Collingwood's largest winning margin under Peter Williams and also the lowest opposition score too. What made the win more impressive was the fact that Collingwood elected to rest Paul Licuria, Scott Burns, Shane O'Bree, Anthony Rocca, Tarkyn Lockyer and Shane Wakelin in a bid to test out the younger guys and new players. It worked a treat with first pick in last year's draft Edward Kinder booting five goals in an impressive performance at full forward. In the midfield, Luke Ball and Gary Ablett combined well, while Sean Dempster had 19 disposals and nine marks in defence. Up forward Aaron Davey collected 23 disposals. It was a fantastic way to kick off the preseason.

Collingwood 18.6 (114) defeated Brisbane 2.9 (21)

Goals: Kinder (5), Neven (2), Maxwell (2), Ball (2), Didak, Tarrant, O'Keefe, Davey, Cloke, Pendlebury, Ablett.
High Possies: Ball (28), Davey (23), Ablett (21)

Magpies go down to Bulldogs but show positive signs

Collingwood may have been bundled out of the preseason competition, but its ability to showcase its youth was not forgotten. Edward Kinder booted another two goals while Aaron Neven collected 24 disposals in the middle. Gary Ablett and Luke Ball were sensational while Travis Cloke booted three goals despite sustaining a rib injury which will see him miss the rest of the preseason. The final two preseason games will see the veterans and older players phased in to see what 22 will start the season in three weeks time.

Collingwood 14.12 (96) defeated by Western Bulldogs 19.14 (128)

Goals: Cloke (3), Kinder (2), Davey (2), Thomas (2), Pittams, Tarrant, Didak, Prestigiacomo, Ablett.
High Possies: Ablett (30), Ball (26), Neven (24), Johnson (24), Didak (21)
Injuries: Travis Cloke - Broken Ribs (1)

Magpie duo prepare for early debut

Magpie draftees Edward Kinder and Aaron Neven are preparing to make their debuts as early as round one after some impressive pre-season form. Kinder booted 14 goals in four games, while Neven played in the midfield and off half back, averaging just under 20 disposals a game. Collingwood won two matches by 93 points including its final encounter of the preseason against Essendon where Anthony Rocca booted nine goals. Collingwood coach Peter Williams said the match showed he could fit all of Cloke, Rocca, Tarrant and Kinder in the one forward line. "Form permitting, we can fit all of the four big boys. Tarrant can play off a flank and move up the ground while the other three are the key talls. Obviously we have a number of talented smalls that can kick goals as well which is nice."

Williams also noted that Neven might even break into the midfield by season's end. "The plan is to start him off the half back flank and then gradually shift him into the middle. We estimate this might be Burnsy's last season and guys like O'Bree and Licca aren't getting any younger so he'll no doubt become a regular in no time." Williams said he was impressed with the squad and preseason thus far, having scoring quite high while reducing the opposition's scoring power.

Richmond hold off dogged Collingwood

Collingwood has lost its second consecutive match, this time by three points at the MCG. Anthony Rocca booted four goals, but 28 disposals from Scott Pendlebury saw the young midfielder best afield. After a poor game last week, Shane O'Bree bounced back with 19 disposals and two goals while Gary Ablett, Luke Ball and Paul Licuria were all busy. It was an unlucky loss for the Pies who now sit at 2-2 after such a great start to the season and they'll be keen to bounce back next week.

Kinder boots seven but Pies lose Ablett for season

Collingwood bounced by with a 24-point win over Hawthorn at the MCG, but are sickened at the loss of Gary Ablett for the season. After losing Scott Burns and Travis Cloke early last season, the Pies were hoping for a bit more luck in 2007. It wasn't to be, with Ablett injuring his back and will miss the entire 2017 season. The current Best and Fairest leader will be a huge loss for the Pies after such an impressive start at his new club. On the plus side, draftee Edward Kinder's move to full forward worked wonders, booting seven goals from 14 disposals and six marks. Meanwhile Luke Ball was fantastic in the middle with 32 touches.

Collingwood 18.12 (120) defeated Hawthorn 14.12 (96)
