Strategy Confronting the challenges of 2016

If you listen to all the Hawks boys and Clarko speak, they all talk about family, culture and leadership. They have built success from doing the basics to an elite level but sustained success comes from a really strong club culture that encompasses these things. I think we have a strong culture but missing a bit of leadership and experience.
I like what the CEO was saying about trying to get 2-3 games at the G in 2016 and also trying to get to train there throughout the year. He mentioned spread due to the wide ground and swirly winds etc. He sounded serious. This is in addition to trading aggressively. Crank it up Eagles.

I'm finally over the hurt of Saturday, I haven't dared venture outside of the Eagles board, & the FJGD board. It's now turned more into feeling like we missed a massive chance to win a flag (stating the bleeding obvious there)

It's so hard to not only finish top 2, which I reckon a WA side needs to genuinely contend for the flag, and then to win 2 massive finals to make the GF. I feel like the 2016 GF will be so much harder to make than this year. This year we saw some of the better sides drop off a bit, and some of the up and coming sides, still not quite there, we bolted ahead of so many teams, and I don't see it being as easy next year (not that it was hugely easy this year, but a lot of things seemed to fall into place for us) teams around us will get better, Crows, Dogs, Tigers, Port, maybe Norf for one more season, and Hawks will still be there abouts, with a tougher draw, and much more pressure, can we make it back to the GF and take our chances this time?

was at the game and boy the pressure west coast was under was huge. we did not handle the situation and our usual disposal turned to s**t. we will be a better out fit next year for sure. we add our 2 injured back men along with some quality trades and west coast will surely improve as will our younger players from this year.

Some of the challenges I see in the next year:
We want to develop less reliance on Priddis as the inside mid/clearance player, and more focus on Redden/Yeo/Sheed/Nelson//////Hutchings
We will potentially loose some rebound speed from our backline if we go back to McKenzie and or Brown in the starting line-up (may need Schofield to drop weight again)
The battle for the second ruck spot. If NN misses any games I would be keen to see Lycett play main ruck ala Goldstein, with a chop out from McInnes.
Where to play McGovern (makes a big difference to the previous two points)
Hill maintaining the form he showed this year
Barrass to take KPF every week in the two's
Get a couple of senior games into Brophy, Lamb and Adamson
Rosa and Butler to be depth players by the end of next season

EDIT: And return the wings as our home ground jumper

I think the boys played their GF in the QF. Lucky to get past Kangas, then Hawks put us to the sword.

Totally agree..we got a couple of favourable decsions when we had our backs to the wall..got it back on our terms and just got over the line..but i dare say NM played the better footy all night....but if you finish 9th the year before & no matter how the PR guys spin it ,do you really believe the players thought theyed finish second & would play off in a GF this year ??..I seriously doubt it..they where menatally shot just getting to the GF..Hawthorn believed thats where they would end up at the begining of the season..the result only prooves mental conditioning plays a big part of any outcome..bring on 2016 and lets get effing serious this time..

I really like my idea of having the surface of the new stadium ready for training by about the middle of next year.

The playing surface will be about 5 meters longer and ten meters narrower than the mcg but you could simulate the dimensions of the mcg on it for training purposes.
The Eagles ended up being Subiaco oval specialists towards the end of the season. We had three away games in the last eleven weeks of the season and were terrible in all.The dimensions of the ground were the main reason for the ten goal difference between home and away in my opinion.

Not a bad idea.

I thought it was strange that the boys didn't fly in until Thursday night only giving them a single session on Friday to get a feel for a ground they had only seen once in the past 12 months.

likewise, i thought they would have gone over a day or two earlier ... should have!

I think playing Brown and Mckenzie goes against our game plan. Only mckenzie will play with schoey and shep plus mcgovern to be a swing man. Hill to be replaced by Jetta (of to years ago when he wanted to play) Rosa will be pushed out.

Understand that we may be looking at giving Sinclair to Sydney for Jetta, I hope not. IMO sinclair is a better 2 ruckman and lycett is more of a 1 and wont push NN out.

Looking forward to Lamb, Duggan, newman and Anderson (if we get him from Hawks)

Don't quite agree with you on the Sinclair bit. Sinclair's best work has been around the ground, and up forward, which usually, for a number 2 ruck is fine, but Nic doesn't ruck as much as most first choice rucks, so our second needs to be a good ruckman more than anything else, that's where Lycett has it over Sinclair. Whenever Sinclair was in the centre, we got beaten, whereas Lycett can actually ruck well, his forward work isn't as good but that's less of an issue for us.

Agree with you though on the first part, Brown won't play next year unless we get an injury to Emac or Schoey. Think those 2 play the KPD spots, with the smalls around them, allowing McGovern to play CHF, a spot we have missed badly since Lynch left. That also frees up JD to play the 3rd tall, and dominate a smaller, lesser defender.
