Problem for Rich though is he is the one that can be curbed the easiest. So even if he is the 2nd or 3rd best mid, he may still get the tag, because players like Hanley and Mayes will probably have the athleticism to not be too affected by it. Rich won't ever be an elite runner, so he needs to have flexibility - either move to the backline, or play more of an inside role - to mess with their match ups.

Might be a problem for Rich but not necessarily the team. The designated tagger distractor perhaps. Especially as he can still do some considerable damage with an 18 possession game.

I reckon Rich suffered from being in the first 22 from day one. He never had to develop any other strings to his bow in order to get a game.

He also makes himself more vulnerable to a tag by being so very one -sided. Makes life easier for your opponent when he knows exactly which direction you're going to run.

A bit worrying that Rich again didn't work his way through a tag, albeit that it was the combined efforts of two Suns players (Lonergan and Martin). I know it is his first hitout of the year but 16 touches from 75% TOG just isn't enough. He's never going to rack up touches like Rocky but his challenge has to be to get those numbers up closer to 24-25 touches a game, irrespective of the defensive attention from the opposition.

Still, he started last pre-season on fire and then struggled in the early rounds - maybe this year will see a reversal!

Seemed to play mainly forward after quarter time.

Inside Football Player Rating - BLvGCS - NAB Challenge 2.
5/10 – Didn't exert himself but worked into game in second half for 16 disposals and a goal.

-- Ben Casanella, Inside Football Thursday, February 27, 2014, Match Review BLvGCS

"Just being in games more. Not in the position to be 30, 40, 50 points behind and come back and try for a miraculous win," Rich said, when asked what his club’s goals were.

"We'd rather be closer (to our opponents), whether the game is more low scoring that doesn't bother us, we just want to be more consistent."

......

Rich said the ball movement and forward line set-up was something they would work on ahead of the round one trip to Launceston to play Hawthorn on March 22.

"It's better that we find out now rather than round one, two or three," Rich said of the offensive struggles.

"It’s definitely something we're going to work on at training and improve before round one."

Milestone men Rich and Redden tread the same path to success
25 March 2014
Michael Whiting

THEY were drafted on the same night more than five years ago, and now Daniel Rich and Jack Redden will play their 100th games together for the Brisbane Lions on Sunday.

In what was a successful 2008 NAB AFL Draft for the Lions, they grabbed West Australian Rich with pick No.7, then followed up with South Australian Redden in the second round at pick No.25.

With his flowing blond hair and thumping left-foot kick, Rich burst on to the scene with a 21-disposal debut in round one of the 2009 season against West Coast that earned him the Rising Star nomination. He ultimately won that award and has since been earmarked for great things. On the field Rich is flamboyant and eye-catching with his style of play. Off the field, both Rich and Redden are quietly spoken, but two of the first Lions players to approach fans and media for a chat. "I'm pretty excited and honoured to run out in my 100th game with one of my good mates," Rich said after a skills training session on Tuesday. "It's going to be a pretty special occasion. "It's pretty exciting we can share this first little milestone together after having been through a fair bit together."

Brisbane devastated as scans set to reveal star Lion Daniel Rich requires full knee reconstruction

A “DEVASTATED’’ Daniel Rich and the Brisbane Lions are praying for a miracle on Monday when scans should reveal the nightmarish reality that the midfield star requires a full knee reconstruction.

Rich’s season-ending injury headlined Brisbane’s horror story from the Demolition Derby on Saturday night when the Gold Coast thumped the Lions by 53 points in QClash7 at Metricon Stadium. In the aftermath of the worst injury in his 101-game career, Rich posted a message on Twitter thanking supporters for their “kind thoughts and best wishes’’. “Fingers crossed with the scans. Stay strong and support the boys!’’ Rich tweeted.

Brisbane football manager Dean Warren said Rich was understandably upset and the club faced a nervous wait on the results of the scans. “Richy is obviously devastated but until you get the final word on the scans, you always hold a bit of hope,’’ Warren said. “However, the doctors seem relatively certain it is an ACL.’’

Lions captain Jed Adcock said Rich would leave a massive hole in the Brisbane line-up because he was a genuine matchwinner. “I had a quick chat to Richy after the game and the diagnosis doesn’t look good but you can only hope we get some good news tomorrow,’’ Adcock said at a sombre Brisbane recovery session yesterday.
