Dawes has to go, enough is enough is enough!!

MMD, sorry for so long in giving my view on Brown as back up ruck. I am sitting in a lounge in the Taipei airport, just checked the teams , Big Footy etc.
Reasons for considering Brown in this role..
He can do worse than Dawes
His is physically of sufficient size, pending his knee being OK. He has some aggression too, has better hands than Dawes.
He is versatile in that he can pick up a resting very big, and when there is no real matchup for his he offers little drive and really tends to unbalance the side. I can recall him, at odd times admittedly, going forward and having a presence.
No way do we want to try 2 ruckman, unless they are very high class players it does not work.

WHat are our other immediate options? Ceglar would appear to not be ready at this stage.

I think he is the sort of bloke that would respond to this challenge.

How do Richmond do it with Maric?

Looking at their lineup they don't look like they have a back up option.

Perhaps Jolly will cover the middle and back half of the ground and allow Cloke to just compete in the forward 50.

Maybe the fact that Maric is younger and more athletic, on a serious note I reckon your Ruck situation is probably one of the more important matters that needs addressing before next season.

Forget the age, Jolly runs his heart out week in week out. His body is hardened and seasoned.

I still want to know how Richmond do it and what set up they use. Does Maric ruck 100% of game time?

There is no doubting the effort that Jolly puts in but after 200+ games and rising 32 he can hardly ruck all day not that Maric does even though he's some 5yrs younger but he's certainly able to be used for longer periods.
I'd be interested in your thoughts on the other part of my post

I think it would be dependent on whether Jolly feels fit to go on next year. If he were, we'd pickup a 2nd Ruck/Forward type (possibly the Q Stick from your mob), and blood our young Ruck stocks in Ceglar and Witts next year. It would give Jolly some games to rest and set up Ceglar and Witts for 2014.

On the other hand, if Jolly hangs up the boots, I think we'd throw the kitchen sink at Hamish McIntosh or someone similar in addition to the 2nd Ruck/Forward who can be useful for a couple of years. It's clear from this season that Dawes has no future in the Leigh Brown role and that Wood probably has no future at the club at all.

We also have Keeffe who can possibly play the 2nd Ruck/Forward role if he can't break into the team as a key defender.

Based on his last couple of games when he was holding the backline together without Tarrant, Reid and Brown - I think he'll be in the best 22 next year.

The last couple of weeks they have thrown Luke McGuire in the ruck to give Maric a spell. Prior to vickery's injury he was a backup. In between this time I can't really remember Maric not being in the ruck - he must be a supremely fit man if my thoughts are correct?

I dont see Keeffe as a ruck back up, i think he is a specialist defender.

The way i woudl envisage it structurally with Brown is that he would not start a back with a specific match up. He would be used as the chop out ruck, enable a rotation of a tall back ( i see Reid and Keeffe as the KPD's) and create a miss macth forward. If side went tall or NicNat/ Cox go forward he could cover.
This to me, gives more mobility and creativity from the defence, allows Dawes to find from perhaps, and ceratinly cannot be a minus in terms of ruck support.
It does assume his knees are ok.

I love a good bump.

Given the spirited conversation taking place in the 'Pies made mistakes' thread I thought it would be interesting to have a read of this classic thread from The Distributer. General consensus seems to be that Dawes is hopeless and needs to be dropped. Even Manic Magpie stated that he should be traded. Props to HFF for his view that Buckley was to blame for playing him in the ruck. You might have been on to something!

It's just thread bagging another premiership player. Seen it once too often. It's surprising we even won a flag given how crap our premiership players were.....

All premiership sides require role players to succeed. Sometimes the needs of teams change and those players are no longer useful.

I'd hate to be a hindsight hero but geez, looked pretty unanimous.

What's changed?

Is it a case of selective memory or confirmation bias?

Yeah and how one tackle this year gave Dawes air time for a week and then...well.....pretty much nothing.
Plenty of premiership players live off being a premiership player rather than a consistently good footballer.
Oh well, as long as there are people who think that premiership player means untouchable and superstar, Dawes will always be an out and out champion.

Chris Dawes 2014:
18 games, 20 goals, 11 hit outs, 54 tackles.

Jesse White 2014:
18 games, 20 goals, 108 hit outs, 38 tackles.

But Chris Dawes is totally awesomer because Wayne Carey said so.

Only player in the history of the game that got a $500k per year contract on the back of a 30 goal season playing as a second string forward.

Good luck to him. Champion bloke, but way overrated.

Clinton Young is a premiership player too. Are you a fan simply because he played in a winning GF team?

So was Q Lynch for that matter.

Looking at this thread, it makes me think that there are still a few people who need to change their nicks to cover their tracks...
