I would suggest that his Lawyer advised him to claim the habit didn't start until he was exposed to the stresses of being an AFL player and due to home-sickness etc. etc.
I would also suggest that the Judge probably fell for it !!!

FALLEN WA footballer Dayle Garlett has filmed himself speeding at more than 200km/hr and posted it to social media — on the same day he was charged with driving a stolen car.

i got flamed by hawthorn supporters when i said they shouldnt touch him with a 10 foot pole this time last year and said it was a massive red flag when both freo and wce wouldnt go near him. even had some specifics

but i was told it was all hear say and the hawthorn recruiters knew better
