Destination clubs - an equalisation loophole?

The thing is by bouncing up to 2nd place on the ladder and having so many players having improved years their should be several players from West Coast's best 22 signing contracts for big pay rises.

Gaff and Shuey had some forms of breakout year. McGovern for sure. Veterans like Le Cras and Kennedy probably out played their contracts. Sheppard for sure. Sheed came off his draft contract with a big year. Welligham, Schofield and so on.

The combination of players keen for success, the talk of 'culture' and egalitarian method of player payments and injuries being a big enough risk to get guys to sign in advance but not so big as to ruin most players earning potentials if they don't lock up a good deal seems to undermine the salary.

By the same token we missed the finals in 2013 and 2014 so salary expectations for players signing in that period would've been influenced by that.

Gaff is signed to the end of 2016, Sheed to the end of 2017, Shuey to the end of 2018. LeCras 2017, Kennedy 2016, McGovern 2016.

The only player I can think of out of contract is Selwood, and he's goneski. We usually have our key players locked away a year or two in advance.

This year we've got Priddis 31 and Rosa (maybe), LeCras, Butler 30. Next oldest are Kennedy & Hurn 29. When it comes time to re-sign Gaff, Shuey, Duggan, Sheed etc. these guys will be starting to finish up.

The AFL is getting more and more like the EPL every year !!!

How long before the gap between the top and bottom teams with the help of new and ever evolving scenario of destination clubs and supported by FA, becomes almost permanent.
Well strictly speaking, we've perhaps reached a point where it's a handful of Victorians clubs anchored to the bottom and Queensland probably not being able to sustain two teams. Look I hate to say it, but if 10 years from now and it's still the same teams. It won't be the systems fault, it'll be that the system will work better with less teams.

So let's hope Melbourne, Carlton and Brisbane keep it together. As currently it looks like they're going nowhere fast.

Who the **** would want to play for St Kilda?

Yeah Nick Riewoldt, Lenny Hayes and Robert Harvey were all held at gunpoint ;)

Frankly you wish you had people like that. Crawford was good but Banger was better, Roughead is good but Roo makes him look like a little bitch and well Lewis and Hayes is probably the closest one, then again everyone loved Lenny, not sure too many love Jordan :p

Should've traded for pick 5. Draft selections are speculative and only succeed 50% of the time at best. They've effectively decided winning games next year is less important than that. Which is unambitious.

They stayed because they were your highest earners.

Much Happier with 1x Premiership player Shane Crawford, 4x Premiership player Roughead, 4x Premiership player Lewis.

Nonsense OP.

Clubs down the bottom have more scope to bring in more talent, both through their salary cap space and available (higher) picks.

As corrected in the following post, we've nailed free agency.

St. Kilda if they pony up will get Carlisle.

Dogs got Suckling.

Pies claim they want to turn an so far unproven how into 'Isaac Smith'

Seems to me a bit of Eddie type chest beating without much foundation IMO.

If you want to blame anyone, blame Essendon for creating an environment where a player like Carlisle wants out and a team like North Melbourne for agreeing to this farce. Don't blame Hawthorn, they just Ninja'd this s**t.

How did this become North's fault?

We address our needs, and * the rest of you.

Pick 15 for a kid that has 3 years development in the leagues best developmental environment, and who by all reports was cruelled by injury/illness; yeah farcial that North would want him. Noting that he addresses the known problem we have, a lack of outside pace.

Whatever let's you sleep at night. North got ****ed on this one. He's a late 20's early 30's pick at best. We'll get Jimmy Toumpas a former pick 4 for around this mark and then you'll realise your pants have been pulled down.

the importance of equalisation is in opportunity, not in outcome

that the hawks are very very very good at what they do in list management is not a "loophole", it is part of being involved in what is supposed to be a sporting competition

The single best sentence I have ever read on the matter.

The sooner that all clubs and their fans understand this, the better. Some people think it is a God-given right to win a premiership, on average every 18 years. It isn't. It takes risk, hard-work and astute people at the top to know when to pull the right levers.

Stupid post. Saints won't get Carlisle because they didn't come to the party with a decent offer. It's their own fault.

Hawthorn are smart and pounced with a much fairer offer and Essendon rightfully want to accept that one.

Carlisle never chose Hawthorn, it's St. Kilda's own fault for it coming to this

Bang on; St Kilda have clearly been in Carlisle's ear telling him how much he could contribute to their side; he's manned up and told his current club that he wants to join the Saints, but when it comes down to it they haven't backed it up by paying the price - if they really wanted him, the deal would already be done.

Strikes me as classic loser's mentality; self-sabotaging so that they'll have some kind of excuse in years to come; "Hawthorn pinched Carlisle, and our #5 never reached his potential due to injuries/poor work ethic/go-home-factor" - whatever; they will have an excuse to fall back on, and they will be content.

What sort of discount are the likes of Hawthorn able to receive because of who they are? Say hypothetically Carlisle was offered 500k per season to go to St Kilda, would he be willing to take 300k to play at Hawthorn?

What utter nonsense.

Crawford was Harvey's equal.

Roo is a great player but Roughead is probably the best pure utility the game has seen in the last decade, alongside Pav. There is little between them.

And if everyone loved Lenny, and Jordan is less popular then where does that leave Crawf vs Banger? People like Harvey whereas they love Crawf.

Whatever let's you sleep at night. North got stuffed on this one. He's a late 20's early 30's pick at best. We'll get Jimmy Toumpas a former pick 4 for around this mark and then you'll realise your pants have been pulled down.

Anderson is contracted.

Few clubs could learn from Crows/Cats/Hawks/North on not how to stuff around, be realistic about the trade situation and get deals done.

Freo are giving up less for Harley Bennell who was a no.2 draft pick and a genuine star, sure he has some off field issues but he's still an elite player while Jed Anderson is a fringe player that is yet to even establish himself at AFL level. To basically give up pick 15 for him is madness imo.

Even the media are writing garbage about this saying how Hawthorn has handed St Kilda a lesson in how to land a player.

Unwilling to part with no 5 in a direct swap with the Bombers, the Saints are relying on the kindness of strangers. Their plan, obviously, has been to trade no 5 "down" for two draft first round picks, keeping one and handing the other to Essendon. Unfortunately, any plan that relies on third parties is fraught.

Erm...Earth to Jake, Hawthorn are relying on North as a third party to get their deal done to get Carlisle and are relying on the kindness of strangers too since North are being extremely kind to Hawthorn by agreeing to give up pick 15 for Anderson and pick 41.

The AFL media are a complete and utter joke.

Even Crawford himself said he wasn't in the same class as Harvey.

It's not like he is going to say he was better.

It's called humility.

There wasn't much between Harvey and Crawf. Would have been fascinating to see them go head to head over 10km. Both unbelievable endurance athletes.

If you fail to recognise that the best player is not always the most important player then nothing I can say will change your mind.

Using Crowley as an example. In no way shape or form could he have ever been considered Fremantle's best player. But he sure as hell was one of their most important players.

Besides which, at this stage it is all academic, it is rumour and inuendo as to what the final price will be for all concerned.

Edit: Apparently we got him. Kid must be a gun, a Brownlow Medalist in the making if ever I saw one. ;)

No disrespect but how do you link North with the Anderson deal with Crows/hawks/cats ? You guys have just taken a huge risk with your pick 15 for a kid who bottom line has not done much, even in the VFL. Its not like Anderson was a dangerfield and you just got s**t done.
