Discussion on Pick #35 - Harrison Wigg

Should be playing American Gridiron, he'd have the "wide receiver" position well and truly covered..

Yes, or perhaps he should even join an Australian Rules Football side that is absolutely desperate for runners capable of getting into the right spot to receive the ball, and using it to initiate forward thrusts with the best kick in the entire draft class of 2014.

Either or.

We can't go crying that he isn't an inside player when we actually need good outside player with a good kick and chose one.

We have plenty of ball winners. Last year our lack of outside receivers and our average kicking let us down.

I can't believe there is even an argument.

His dire lack of pace will mean he will be easily closed down at AFL level and it won't take opposition sides long to work that out IMO. Not too many successful "outside" players going around without real pace in the AFL nowadays.

One thing Wigg is going to need is to be able to read the play really well... being a great reader of the play does offset pace on the offensive side at least.

Must say, his one thing he is elite in currently is absolutely gold dust and apparently has good composure as well.

Wasn't excited about this pickup, but it could be a grower.

His dire lack of pace

Hyperbole?

In a nutshell, Wigg can use the ball and he can find it, two qualities that don't go out of fashion.

Wigg is under consideration having proved across the season he's more than adept at both getting the ball and delivering it.

And.

It was also about his speed of ball movement – Wigg has the conviction to go for long kicks and doesn't waste too much time doing it.

And this doesn't sound like he's a plodder.

There's a little bit of Matt Suckling in the way Wigg wheels onto his left side and streams out of defence.....

Perhaps you got a little worked up prematurely and need a bex and a lie down?

Bad news, it turns out our first round selection was actually 0.13s slower in the 20m sprint than Wigg. Presumably this means Lever has a "super-dire" lack of pace.
His extra 15cm in height, kind if makes up for that I think

I love that he takes his Dad's initials into every game with him. And his kick is a thing of beauty it really is. Except for that first vid haha wtf? Must've been hungover in that Vic Country game.

Read an article recently long story short it was about the SA boys being over looked because of the hype in Victoria. 2 years running they have won the national champs but the U18 vic comp seems to get all the attention. I'm not a recruiters bootlace, don't follow u18's.

I remember one recruiter talking about this and the inference was that SA was picking a team to win a carnival, balanced line up, players who would perform now, or could fill a role in the carnival.

Whereas some of the other teams pick the players most likely to be drafted - size, skill, pace, x-factor, competitiveness... whether the team wins is less of a consideration for them.

Just what we need another smart ass, the fact I disagree with your opinion must make me wrong according to you..... you are entitled to your opinion as am I....the passage of time will tell who's right or wrong, if he turns out to be a good AFL player I'll be stoked and happy to admit I was wrong, but at this stage my opinion is just as good as yours until I'm proven wrong. I will not lower myself to making smart ass comments re your opinion.!

And you weren't a smartarse with "dire lack of pace"?

No offence but....

Not sure where this is coming from? In his draft video he was either breaking away from or maintaining a decent lead on most of the other blokes chasing him.

Anyways, speed of the mind and speed of the ball >>> Speed by foot. You need not worry.

Gold Coast must be absolutely furious, they spent an even higher pick on an even shorter midfielder who also ran a 3.06s 20m sprint in Touk Miller. Of course they are known for regularly screwing the pooch when it comes to drafting.

Perhaps you should check out his COMPLETE bio not just his vital statistics, Miller is a big bodied, inside mid who CAN win his own ball, not even similar to Wigg.

1)Where do you get the idea Wigg *can't* win his own ball?

2)Don't we already have a plethora of ball winners and need players with a different skill set?

Can he make it at AFL? I have nfi, but I'm not searching for reasons he can't make it. Are there genuine concerns? Probably, but you are taking some perceived deficiencies and magnifying them.

His dire lack of pace
The more people seem to read sub-par journalism, the more it seems to peer into the musings of their own writ. Truly bizarre.

This is why reading stuff like the football gossip garbage is dangerous.

There was no information in relation to a detrimental foot speed in any of this, yet somehow you've come out of the other side of reading information as finding so *then* writing about it while stating it as fact. Nigel Smart is not the Kingmaker.

This is the kind of wording or incorrect paraphrasing that drives some people to respond in a certain manner. This happens a lot.
Please be careful with your choice of words and what your intent is to say. If that actually was what you were trying to say, maybe find a better way to say it.

Big bodied? He's 2kg heavier than Wigg. They can both win their own ball, by the way. Wigg is just played on the outside because he's so dangerous there.

There are plenty of classically 'slow' players who get out of trouble with superior footskills.

I guess our very own Adelaide draft specialist Skippos must have the wrong info up on his thread, very unlike him with his usual meticulous research. He has Miller a tidy 8.5kg heavier??

Pick 31 - Hawthorn: Touk Miller (178.2 cm, 82.6 kg - Inside MID/FWD) - Links have been strong for a very long time. If EVW is here it's a chance, ditto McDonald

Pick 39 - Western Bulldogs: Harrison Wigg (178.1 cm, 74.15 kg - Small DEF/MID)

Knightmare's thread.

Touk's listed on the AFL website as 80kg, Wigg as 77kg. I think by this point we're kind of splitting hairs, though.
