Just imagine ...

... if John Brumby, just before the beginning of the Desal build, had got the government to pay itself $1 billion and had cancelled the build ...

.. on Telsor's figures that would have been a cool nett $19 billion to spend on schools and hospitals and protection money to the CFMEU.

How about that eh?
Just imagine ...

... if Jeff Kennett, instead of signing a contract with Transurban, had borrowed the money and built CityLink himself ...

... we'd be raking in billions per year in tolls and it would well and truly paid off the investment without being hamstrung from building competing infrastructure and had billions to spend on other infrastructure.

How about that eh?

Kennett didn't have the foresight that Bolte did unfortunately.

Nobody has...Although it's more that politics has changed...Governments changing more often means that they'll only build things they can open during the life of the government (why spend billions only to have the other guy get the political capital from opening/naming/etc?).

But yeah, they had to build the Desal plant..after all, it's largely owned by union super funds...The ALP version of kickbacks to their mates.

This is laughable that it was done for the CFMEU - we all know that Brumby was a big union man and did their bidding at every turn (chortle). More ahistorical nonsense from the Guru - they refused to staff polling booths for him on his re-election: http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/power-station-union-lashes-brumby-20101014-16lse.html

What are you on about Contra? The Desal plant was commissioned by the Bracks government. The same Steve Bracks who was installed as ALP leader a month after the CFMEU staged a walkout from the February 1999 ALP State Conference while John Brumby was speaking.

Aw - Jeffrey shoulda borrowed the lot should he? :D
Then his government should have built Citylink itself should it?:D :D
And then they woulda had billions to spend on other infrastructure would they? :D:D:D
Really and truly and rooly.

Now here's another poster casting his pearls before swine on this board like (moderator) Jiska and the young Pazza ahead of him.
All of them with Masters degrees in Advanced Rustbucktry.
Quite possibly even from Deakin online university.

The CFMEU premier needs you Icewolf. Do not deprive him of your knowledge, your wisdom and your experience in assisting to ensure that infrastructure plays out its full potential in the achievement of Rust Bucket Governance 1 (Hons)

Yep

Yep, funded by the revenue brought in by the city link toll road.
Really and truly and rooly.
Yep, I'm having trouble working out what your problem with this is, it's just simple economics.

Wish he'd they'd listen to me unfortunately they're more inclined to go with Private-Public Partnerships don't know why if it's economical for a private enterprise to do it under a PPP then surely it is more economical for the government to just borrow the money and do it by itself.

Your CFMEU stuff is cute by the way, it's such a successful strategy just as Premier Naptime, oh wait ;)

Oh and it's Mr Ice Wolf to you. :D

Yep

Yep

Yep,

Yep,

But of course, yep x 4.

On second thoughts you probably don't need to advise the CFMEU premier here although one wonders if Lurch would think it a good idea to slug motorists a toll tax for general revenue rather than confine it to paying off an infrastructure road bill.
Goodness even Lurch might think you were stupid, Wolf, but I know otherwise.

Might be more useful for you to head to Adelaide where Premier Weatherill is exhibiting alarming signs of wishing to move his state out of rust bucket status. Badly needs to be set right,.

Again that's Mr Ice Wolf to you.

Using revenue generated by infrastructure to pay for other infrastructure is damn sight better idea than just using it to line private industries pockets.

And how pray tell (I already know i'm going to regret asking this) is Premier Weatherhill exhibiting alarming signs of wishing to move his state out of rust bucket status in your expert opinion? and if your answer includes raising the GST don't bother.

Of course, wolf, you wouldn't have seen discussion of raising the gst as germane to tackling rust bucketry. Of course you wouldn't. That's why you need to hot foot it over to Adelaide taking your experience, wisdom and knowledge to enlighten Premier Weatherill. Rust bucketry must be preserved at all costs
There is also the matter of his Royal Commission into the the nuclear industry.

Now its likely moi might be wrong about Lurch - probably he wouldn't think your ideas on funding general revenue by toll taxes on motorists was stupid. But suspect Weatherill probably would. Even more reason to set him right. South Australia needs you wolfie.

That's Mr Ice Wolf, If you can't even get that right how am I suppose to believe anything you write or even if you're actually a Guru?

I was right I have regretted asking that.

Totally agreed

Somewhat comparable to Kennett scrapping plans for the relocation of Melbourne Museum to Southbank, and replacing it with a big new casino on prime real estate and awarding the contract to his Liberal Party donors.

Stones, glass houses, and all that..

The Desal plant was a Liberal Party initiative and part of their plan to get elected in 2006. After releasing their 2006 Environment Policy, they launched a massive advertising campaign critising the Labor Government for the lack of rain and claimed only a Liberal Party would build a desal plant to save the Victorian people. They even got their medal mongol mates to splash the news with the critisms. As a result, the Labor Party was forced to match the Liberal Party's commitment.

The Victorian public decided which party would actually build it, at the 2006 State Election. I suppose they realised that the Liberal Party hadn't actually built anything since the City Loop was commissioned under Bolte, except of course for Federation Square which was delivered at a cost of more than 4 times the budgeted 110 million; hardly a big infrastructure initiative.

After the BB corruption affair it seems the LNP lapdogs have been ordered by their controllers to deflect any discussion away from the stinking carcass that is the Federal LNP to anything else.

We had the $39 billion Christopher Pyne re-election announcement yesterday, and suddenly the LNP lapdogs are spamming forums and social media to get BB corruption off the front page.

Lots of loot flowing into state revenues from the casino.
Helps prevent rust bucketry but that's not what the State of Victoria is about these days.

Hasn't Adelaide had a casino much longer than Melbourne? Didn't seem to prevent rust bucketry in South Australia.

Ted Baillieu went to the 2006 election promising to build a $400 million desalination plant at Hastings or Werribee.

The CFMEU installed Bracks as Labor leader. He went into the 2006 election rejecting the Liberal opposition’s call for a desalination plant. However he broke his election promise and delivered his union paymasters a $5.7 billion construction project. The pay agreement was so generous the project was known as “Treasure Island” amongst building workers. With ongoing costs the desal plant will cost $22.5 billion over 28 years and might never produce a drop of consumable water. Labor had no mandate to build a desal plant let alone commit to spending $22.5 billion on a white elephant.
