Most of the south west of WA, the wheatbelt and the goldfields have a strong development program.
But the biggest hurdle with the pilbara and Kimberley kids, mainly indigenous kids, is that moving from a lifestyle of close family and towns the size of one city block to the big smoke is simply too challenging.
Academy programs that involve periodic stays in the city should help combat this problem. Perhaps league funded flights for immediate family members several times during the season could be another strategy. Too much talent is lost from the regions of Gascogne, pilbara and Kimberley. Isaiah Stevens is a good example from my own club of a list talent from that region.
There is work being done in the Kimberley involving WAFL club Claremont - WA footy is zoned by WAFL clubs.

... there is much more to the program than football.
“With someone like Roy, we’re talking about as much raw athletic ability as you can get,” Mr Farmer said. “This is a boy who lives out in Looma community who’s never been exposed to that next level of coaching and technique.
“In the past, we've sent boys down to Claremont based purely on their football ability and they haven't necessarily been equipped with the life skills to have a sustainable life down in Perth.
“What we're trying to do now is expose them to that lifestyle and those expectations so if they're able to transition to Perth, it’s smooth.”
The 50 players will be monitored and mentored during the off season, with an emphasis on schooling, community engagement, nutrition and strength and conditioning.
