Toast Farewell Mike Pyke

Seems only yesterday I was googling this

Short career, but quality. A premiership Ruckman, who played better then expected on the big stage

That reaction to the greatest try in Canadian history sums up his whole demeanor.

Mike Pyke, "Well that happened". :D

If pyke does in fact retire

Does his salary count in the cap next year?

I would think so. Cap figure sits there until the contract expires.

Called 'dead money' in the US sports.

It depends. The money for next year would only count towards the cap if it gets paid out. I imagine that the full amount wouldn't be, it would be likely that would be a renegotiation of the terms of the final year and Pyke would receive a lesser amount. In that case, the amount that is actually paid to him would count in the cap.

The AFL has indicated that in the Franklin case such a renegotiation would not be accepted, so we would need to include the full amount of his contract in our cap for the full duration of the contract, regardless of whether he plays that long or gets paid the full amount of the original contract. That is an exception, though, not the rule.

Any player over 30 should be one year deals, not sure who thought it was a good idea at the end of 2014 to sign him for 2.
