Past Father / Son - Josh Dunkley

I see he has been selected in the AIS-AFL academy with Swans Academy players Isaac Heeney and Callum Mills.

He is not a defender or forward. A bit of a review from the Mad Monday Show on impressive players in the u16 championships.

J.Dunkley:
A very impressive inside midfielder who is a contested ball specialist and works hard defensively.
Averaged 18 disposals, 3 marks, 5.3 clearances, 9.3 tackles and 1 score assist.

Sounds like a Swans player.

Wow, three AIS players we have first dibs on. Not bad at all.

I wonder how much of the "if he's half as good as his old man...." he gets. I reckon that would be one reason to NOT choose Sydney. Like Garry Ablett & JPK they wanted to shine out of the spotlight of their famous fathers/families. To do so it was a move of club that was required. I think that is what Dunks Snr was going on about more-so than anything else. He'd be just as happy for him to play for any club, not just play under the shadow of Snr's career but do it himself. Also as the family live in Victoria of course you want your family to stay in the same state. Silly beat up by the media though...

JPK just wanted to play senior football, something the Hawks couldn't promise him.

GAB was offered more money than any AFL player had ever been offered before, plus the chance to be an influential player in a start-up club. He'd also already achieved two premierships and the tag of the best player in the comp before he made his move. And the Ablett name at Geelong is a little more prominent than the Dunkley name at Sydney. Plenty of players join their father's club and few worry about living in their father's shadow.

I did say that was one reason and not the reason didn't I? And to say it wasn't also a major factor in GAblett or JPK's choices is wrong IMO.

I live in the town that Josh plays for in Sale, I have watched him play numerous times, last year he played in a Sale senior premiership as a midfielder. He laid the most tackles in the match from memory. Sale is in the Gippsland League which is a major Victorian Country League, Sale boast a remarkable list having former AFL players Matt Ferguson, Dylan Mclaren and Jake Schuback playing as well as former VFL player Luke Collins and also Ryan Pendlebury (younger brother of Scott) who played Vic Country this year.

Josh is a big bodied kid who is a genuine midfielder. He looks at home at playing with men, his defensive skills are excellent, he cracks in, has good speed and size, kicks the ball really well and is a genuine star for the senior side. He is a starting midfielder for Sale and they will be significantly weaker when he goes on to further advancements in the next couple of years. As someone who saw Scott Pendlebury play at that age the the comparison between the two is unfair and different as Josh is someone who has played football all his life and Scott was a basketballer who played Junior football, but I cannot see any reason why Josh will not play AFL, as to how far he goes is up to him. Hope this helps.

So is it this coming draft or next we can access him?

If he is only turning 17 this year then it will be next years. Has to be 18 before December 31st in the year they are drafted.

edit: I just seen his twitter and he has a picture of him with Goodes as well as a picture of him in the Swans rooms, doesn't seem like he'll be in doubt then!

Named in the bests for Gippsland again last week. Picked for the VIC Country squad.
Picked as a bottom ager, nice :) Should be even better next year. We haven't added a high draft pick midfielder to the team since McVeigh? Looks to be two or three coming our way in the next two drafts.

If we do end up getting dunkley, mills, and heeney the other boards are gona loose it I reckon should be fun seeing that unfold.

To be honest i don't really look into potential draftees that much, what is it about Mills and Heeney that would make others rage? and how would we end up with those 2 ahead of other teams who have picks before us?
