First Test for Dan Andrews - Militant union flexing muscle

I don't see how a Union can be bad given their whole purpose is to defend the working class from abuse in the workplace. Wouldn't that mean you are actually for workplace abuse and corruption?

wow

Special laws to sell the Port of Melbourne will be introduced into the Victorian Parliament after May's budget, Treasurer Tim Pallas has revealed.
The Labor government expects to collect an estimated $5 billion-$6 billion from the long-term lease of the port, and has promised to use the money to pay for key transport promises, including 50 level crossing removals in eight years.
But a treasury estimate of much the Labor government expects to reap will be kept "opaque" in this May's budget, Mr Pallas said.
His comments came after stevedore DP World threw the level crossings project into doubt by taking legal action to stall the sale of the Port. The Andrews government has committed to finalising the port lease by 2015-16 but DP World's action could scupper those plans; such is the company's fury over a proposed 750 per cent rental increase for access to the port.
The company has commenced legal proceedings to have port rental rates overseen by the national competition regulator. The case could take at least two years and delay any proposed sell-off of the publicly-owned port, denying the government the billions it needs to make good on its transport agenda.

The stevedore's defiant stance is certain to put doubt in the minds of prospective buyers of the port. The lease price - estimated at about $6 billion - is tied to the income a lessee would accrue through rental rates.

Not that rental rates would be passed on to consumers.

Surprising though with his brilliant Arts degree and extensive experience in the private sector that he should make such a gaffe.

Victoria's Treasurer Tim Pallas remains "resolute" in abandoning the East West Link despite protests from Europe about Labor's treatment of Spanish and French companies involved with the multibillion-dollar project.

Mr Pallas confirmed on Tuesday morning that the French and Spanish embassies had lodged complaints with the Premier's Parliamentary Secretary about treatment of tenderers Bouygues and Acciona.
The two governments made a joint protest to the Andrews government about Labor's plan to cancel the controversial road project, according to a News Corp report.

"We have heard them but we remain resolute in our view, the interest of the Victorian taxpayer will be the prime consideration of this government," Mr Pallas said as he entered parliament on Tuesday morning.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said it was unprecedented for an ambassador to protest at the financial practise of an Australian government. "We are no better than Zimbabwe and Venezuela in dealing with international companies, and that sends a terrible message," Mr Guy said.

Problem is clear for anyone to see it.

The privatisation of our roads for the sake of profits.

The lessons have been learned from Citylink and Eastlink and so this current Government has decided, legally and electorally to end private/public partnerships (see also Peter Mac and the Cancer Centre) and only launch projects where it has the control.

Re: Peter Mac, are the donations conditional on a private ward? What is in it for them whether they donate to the public or private system?
Can't see the point in their arguement that it would attract international patients. The RCH has a number of patients from overseas without needing a private ward.
Further when I had my heart attack some years ago I was asked as I had private medical insurance, was it okay for them to claim off that. I agreed since it would take pressure off the public system. Treatment was the same, the specialist was great, only difference was I didn't have my own room and a better choice of food.
Let's improve the public system before providing for the wealthy and overseas patients.

Did you have to pay the gap?

My late Father in law had private health insurance all his life, but when he had his heart attack he insisted on going public. He was then diagnosed with cancer and given months to live. He continued to pay his premiums until the day he die. I though it was strange as he was a very active ALP branch member.

Straws meds old chap

Lol, Pess he is just another marionette with his strings being pulled by the unions. Its all too typical of the ALP ie bugger all of them have worked in the real world. Hence its no surprise that they make such poor decisions and waste so much cash. Wayne Swan a prime example.

Amusing that you don't think its in anyway relevant.

And I counteresd with a bona fide businessman, not your usual liberal accountants or lawyers, who was one of the biggest failures as premier ever

And it was always going to be the case once consortiums insisted on profits, being compensated for lack of profits, and not bearing any risk

Lol. As if any sane person could put Ted on a list anywhere near Kirner, Cain, Field, Burke, Dowding, Lawrence etc.

Not that your argument has any statistical validity in any event.

The usual SRP muppetry, we can all have a crack at Abbott re his background but not Dan Andrew's non career / joke degree because he gets a free pass.

Aint seen nothing yet, by the time matthew guys slippery or slip shod work as planning minister comes to light hell be looking to be elected and probably go down as the best known opposition leader ever in australia. Not for the right reasons too.

Many have said nothing nout nada happened when ted was in charge, they were wrong. Matthew Guy was busy screwing up the built environment for decades to come

I love this government they have clear vision and a tough attitude towards defending it's policies.

The crappy road is gone at minimal cost and top financial experts are blown away. The rail is getting built along with the rail crossings most importantly, if they keep this up they should be a two term government.

You'd make a great politician.

You have no issue with the constant theft and misappropriation of tax payers money to piss up against the proverbial wall.

Anyone who loves that s**t is a complete bellend.

You fail to understand we saved 17.58 billion from not building your crappy road.

Nothing to do with "my road". I don't live in Melbourne.

We didn't save anything. We lost hundreds of millions of OUR dollars. Only an idiot would try and argue for either poxy party doing the right thing here.

Only an idiot would support spending 17.5 billion on a project with no business case and an abysmal return, not factoring in future unmentioned toll costs. All these facts unfortunately go in one ear and out the other with people like you.

Thank god you don't live in this state and are incapable of obtaining a white collar job. Bizinus kase? Labers mess? bunch of peons really.

I live in Geelong genius.

No.. we're the ones paying for these liberals in this regard handing our dollars over to their private mates, as always. 18 billion of our money your government almost blew on a terrible project, for the sake of your private interests and seats. Everytime your mob are in power the less fortunate are attacked and their living costs raised, all to make the rich richer with your tax cuts that amount to treason. Wreckless disgusting government if you're going to blow money at least blow it on the most sensible projects that benefit the majority. Not just the rich.

And lol Geelong.

You can't grasp the project cost 17-18b. Would you spend that much on a house in Geelong? If you were as wreckless as the liberal government you probably would!

Better to lose your 5% deposit than buy a house in Geelong in general. If you bought a house in Geelong to receive a 45% return you'd be considered a stupid ******* moron as a 2.4% yield is enough to turn anyone off property investing, yet alone have them default on their mortgage the first week. Just because the previous government has billions of our dollars doesn't mean they should just blow it on a useless money pit of the road for the sake of a few miserable rich bogans.

Economically he's saved us over 9 billion considering the return was around 45c to every dollar. You'd think this governments less fiscal than the previous :$

Says the doodlehead Geelong supporter.

Keep ignoring what you don't want to hear.

45c return on an 18 billion project is a dud investment. $1.90 on a 9-11 billion dollar project is a good investment.

I don't understand how you can even function without a brain. It's like someone programmed "CFMEU" into a peanut to protect it in it's shell whenever it's bombarded with real world facts.

Why would you defend such a s**t project over a lucrative one? You're sticking loyal to a party like it's an afl team, at the expense of ******* 18 billion of our money. That's what I don't understand it's sickening to think how many backwards meddling people there are throwing spanners in the works of everything right and correct.

You'd actually fight for a 0.45 over a 1.90 with more capital outlay like some dumb collingwood supporter in the name of loyalty and not financial sense. That's what's wrong with you liberals, always so vile and rabid you'll cross any line to get your way over anyone else. Numero Uno :drunk:
