After getting the idea from the following article ( http://footygeek.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1932&Itemid=83 ), I decided to use it as the basis to work out how many times clubs just missed the finals over the first 100 VFL / AFL seasons (from 1897 to 1996):
Anyway, it turns out Fitzroy was pretty unlucky, finishing 1 spot out of the finals on 14 occasions in our 100 seasons in the VFL / AFL.
(Number of Seasons played b/w 1897 and 1996 in brackets)
GEELONG 15 (97)
FITZROY 14 (100)
CARLTON 11 (100)
S.M / SYDNEY 11 (99)
COLLINGWOOD 9 (100)
MELBOURNE 9 (97)
RICHMOND 9 (90)
HAWTHORN 6 (72)
ST.KILDA 5 (98)
ESSENDON 4 (98)
FOOTSCRAY 4 (72)
NORTH 2 (72)
ADELAIDE 0 (6)
BEARS 0 (10)
FREO 0 (2)
UNIVERSITY 0 (7)
WEST COAST 0 (10)
