Does anyone have or know how to get footage from WAFL matches, especially from pre-Eagles days?

I know that CL, EF and SF all sell Grand Final winning DVDs, but I have not come across any other full matches or highlights of matches apart from snippets of finals or Origin matches on YouTube.

Surely Channel 7 or other broadcasters would have something in their archives, but I would presume that any purchase through these organisations would involve arms or legs. Does anyone out in BF-land have old VHS or DVDs of WAFL footage. Personally, I would like to find some 1970s and 1980s footage especially involving players who went on to become household names in the VFL as well as guns in the Stephen Michael category.

the ABC in Perth has a 3+ hour highlights DVD which they'll sell to you for $44 plus postage, but the glory days of the league were all broadcast on Channel 7, and actually finding out who to email to find what they've even got is a maze in itself.

Wonder if there's enough footage out there to get a WAFL archive similar to this happening?

See if we can wrest control of footage away from Channel 7 Perth, who seem intent on not letting people know what they've actually got locked away in their vaults.

I'd love to get my hands on the Escort cup game where Claremont took on Hawthorn (1980) and got up by 20 something points.
I'd also like the 1981 Grand Final.....and 1987, 89 and 91.
The 1977 SOO game (inaugural) and the 86 one as well.

Just gotta firgure out who I have to kill.

Claremont sell those GF DVDs through the club office - I bought the 1981 GF through them. That match had some big brawls early on and the Bulldogs lost - two reasons to love it!

Exactly what I mean. The SA one started from scratch only recently and now it is booming.

I got some VFA matches on DVD (not an easy proposition but easier than getting WAFL games) in a similar manner recently in exchange for WAFL Grand Final DVDs.

Just something as simple as some old copies of Seven's Big League could get the ball rolling!

What is the ABC one for $44 about?

I've got a number of swans games/highlights from 1981-1985 plus 1990 GF, I transfered 82-84 Gf's onto a dvd for my old man a couple of years ago, all the others still on VHS. Somewhere in my collection I have tapes of last qtr of grand finals since 1964 which were on TV on a GF marathon a few years back. not sure what year they go up to. I plan to convert them to dvd or save then to my pc at some stage.

I'd also like the 1981 Grand Final.....

The 1977 SOO game (inaugural) and the 86 one as well.

I'd like the first 10 mins of the 81 GF with Basil Campbell running through Barry Beecroft, the rest of the game, surprisingly, i'm not that interested in:eek:

I'd love the the 77 SOO game, just to see Basil again drop Don Scott and to see the other South boys (Max Richardson, Morley, Magro, McKay, Monteath) killing it

I know that a number of EP supporters have VHS and dvds of the 1972 and 78 grand finals floating about. A post on the official or unofficial forums may find you someone willing to make a copy.

I've got a tape at home from when channel 7 did a footy marathon before the grand final one year. its got the 2nd half the 78 GF and most of (if not all) the 77 SOO on it.

I'd like the first 10 mins of the 81 GF with Basil Campbell running through Barry Beecroft, the rest of the game, surprisingly, i'm not that interested in

the tape also has that on it.

What is the ABC one for $44 about?

I got the name recently of a lady in the archive department of ABC Perth, and enquired about any WAFL footage they may have in their vaults. She replied:

"The ABC didn’t have the broadcast rights for WAFL games earlier than 1990, so we have few complete games prior to that year. The segments from the 1970’s that you can view on the web page you cite are all that we have, ie we don’t have the complete games, only those highlights.

In 2008 our WAFL team put together a full 3 hour program of WAFL highlights made up from the various segments we had in the Archive, that I could provide to you on DVD for $44 (+ $5.50 p&h)."

I haven't bought it yet, but will hopefully do so soon. Here's hoping it's worth the $$$!

The 1986 SOO match was on FoxSports last week.

Thankfully it was recorded and made available for download. I'll be transferring it to DVD soon as already there's about three or four family members who want copies.

Such a damn good game of football!!

Those 82-84 dvds, once completed, might be needed!

If memory serves, you can't even get those from SDFC

I'd love to get my hands on the Escort cup game where Claremont took on Hawthorn (1980) and got up by 20 something points.

I don't think you would like the ending.I don't know if they played in 1980,but in 1979 they played at VFL park. That was the game Claremont looked like they were going to win and all of a sudden the sprinklers came on just as Phil(might have been Jim)Krakouer was having a set shot on goal. After a while sprinklers turned off,Krakouer missed and the Hawks won by 20 odd and said no to a rematch.

Loved watching the 86 SOO the other night. What a pleasant suprise to see it on Fox.When Buckey kicked the winning goal I was jumping up and down in my lounge room along with Macnish in the goal square.

I have a copy of the Clash of the Premiers game between $ubiaco and Hawthorn played in 1986.Good game of footy with the Hawks getting up by 2 points.

I also have 1983/84/86 SOO games on vhs and swan districts defeating collingwood in the 1982 escort cup.

Watched the last qtrs of gf's from 1974 - 1980 on the weekend, I still dont like watching 1980 so I only watched a bit of that one

The 82-84 gf are already done - did a dvd cover using the grand final budgets they turned out quite good apart from the fact that there was a bit of a delay in the sound ie player kicks the ball and about 3 seconds later the commentators say "...kicks the ball" so I may re-do them and see if I can correct it.

Would love to know how or where you got your hands on that 82 escort cup game? I have been after WAFL games from the early 80's for ages.

Recorded it back in 1982, its been sitting in video collection since then, watched a few times but not for quite a few years.

I have about 100 hours or so of vhs to go through - gonna take some time i reckon to tfr my my pc.

From memory all games bar i think 82 final series are swans games, mainly highlights.

I am going to have a go at getting the DVD from the ABC in the next few days, so I will let you know how I go when I do (if someone knows the name of the ABC archivist, please PM me). If someone else has a copy, shout up and let us know what it is like!

Anyone else got WAFL DVDs? I have club purchased copies of Grand Finals from 79, 80 and 81, plus 78 from a friend who gave me a copy (origin unsure - I am still to watch it but will so soon).

Unfortunately, that is it for now but I have a tiny bit from the SANFL (video reviews of season 1981 and 1990, plus a Norwood GF win - 1984? - DVD purchased from the club) and the VFA (one or two DVDs with highlights and a couple of Division 1 GF's).

I would also love to see the escort cup game SD vs Collngwd. I've only ever heard about it. Claremont also played them that year I think, but went down by 30-50 points....

Ahhhh, that game was a year or two before the one I was referring to. That year Claremont also played Geelong and beat them (1980).

I have just ordered a copy of this DVD through the ABC and once the archivists make a copy for me from their master copy then I will have my own copy.

If you are hunting down a copy, ring the ABC reception on 9220 2700 and ask for ‘WAFL footage archives’ and they should put you right.

I collected the DVD from the ABC yesterday and only got to see the first half hour of it due to rampant children at home at bedtime, but it seems to be a State of Origin DVD to celebrate 150 years of football in 2008.

So far, I have seen brief highlights of WA-Vic from Perth (1979 Carnival) and extended highlights of WA-Vic from VFL Park in 1980.

With about 2 1/2 hours still to watch, it bodes well for some decent amount of footage of the 1986 game!

I have a few old vids, which I have transferred to dvd. I had the 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1991 SOO matches on VHS but cant find them anywhere. Also had 1979 GF. Cant work out where it went, either.

Anyway, I do have 1969, 1975, 1984, 1990, 1995, 1999 and 2003 GFs, along with That Was The Season That Was for 1981 and 84 and a few other random matches and highlight packages on dvd, including some from the 50s and 60s. I even have a 1930s package featuring the 1934 and 1935 finals series and some footage from the 1936 State game.

Anyone willing to take the lead on a WAFL project similar to the SANFL one? I would be happy to do some of the transfers from VHS to DVD...

I've got the 1979 GF between EF & SF on DVD.

If anyone's got anything else that you think might be good to watch, let me know and we can work out a trade. Mainly looking for stuff from what I consider to be the golden age of WAFL footy, 1976-1985... but throw ideas to me and I'll listen to them with open ears.

Don't have the time or resources to get an Archive site up and running ala the SANFL one, but it would be great to do and I'd be fully involved (as much as I can be) in getting footage out there.

UFG, I have a heap of highlights packages on DVD from the period 1978-1987. Most are about 20 mins per game. All WP games, though. Im sure we could organise a trade if you are interested?
