Mistakes.

The team who makes the fewest invariably wins the premiership.
This is why decision making and quality of ball use are so criminally underrated -if they are even rated at all- by the Champion Data system and the legions of football followers and so called "experts" who have become slaves to it.

It is paradoxical that the media's focus has shifted more and more towards the mindless appraisal of largely meaningless disposal numbers in an era of football when scoring without the benefit of opposition mistakes has become almost impossible.
If anything the most analyzed stat in the game should be turnovers, or scores from turnovers if you prefer, since this has become the very lifeblood of teams to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
Stats like tackles and pressure acts which articulate a side's ability to force their opponents into error are also extremely important.

Memo to the football media - please start paying less attention to the number of times players touch the ball and more attention to what they do when they have it.

Raw turnover numbers on their own, like every other stat you mentioned, are meaningless without context.

Yeah you could argue all stats are meaningless without context which is why we should never put too much faith in stats in the first place, I agree with you.

Turnovers in the corridor anywhere near the center square are murder these days. Turnovers in the forward pocket, different story.

Correct. I think it was something like 11-3 in the defensive midfield zone in the first quarter on Saturday. Said a lot.

Points scored per team is a big one.

But seriously there's a fair bit of talk on scores from turnovers on the shows.

But not all turnovers are mistakes are they ?

They should have forced and unforced turnovers like tennis, would be interesting to see.

Isn't scores resulting from turn overs a stat? Probably the most telling to see how the opposition played.

Hawks had bucket loads of those on Saturday..

What about kicking straight? How many games are decided by teams having similar amounts of shots at goals and one side being able to convert a lot better?

Fuggin this. This so much.

The amount of times games could have been iced in a third quarter with a team kicking 2.5 instead of 5.2 and then going on to lose in a tight one.

This line of thinking would cost Priddis a few votes ...completely agree with your points

Less mistakes, courage, athleticism, selfless team orientated play and skill do it for me every time.
