Strong batting order but geez the bowling attack leaves a bit to be desired.

Jo Angel played 4 tests for Australia and led the WA attack for over a decade, he wasn't exactly an obscure 90s shield player.

Duncan Spencer was an obscure 90s shield player for WA, he had big wraps on him as he was quick but he was also erratic and only lasted one season.
Faced him in a grade cricket game off a short run after he buggered his back. He was still ridiculously quick and swung it a mile.

At that stage Blewett and Martyn were handy enough medium pacers and there was Bevan. From memory Reiffell started off in the A's but got added to Australia.

Yeah Blewett was seen as a genuine all-rounder in the limited-overs format back then.

Didn't Reiffel get added to the main team than made 12th man? From memory he was bowling well and really the one guy that could've threatened to see Australia A beat Australia and cause a few red faces amongst selectors.

What would be your states "No Test XI" from the 1990's?

.

WA

1 Mark Lavender
2 Murray Goodwin*
3 James Brayshaw
4 Wayne Andrews
5 Michael Dighton
6 Darren Wates
Wk Ryan Campbell
8 Kade Harvey
9 Ken Mcleay
10 Tom Hogan
11 Peter Capes

That was a lot harder than expected, on account that WA was an Australian test team factory in the 90's. Anyone half decent got a gig. Non test playing fast bowlers especially were incredibly hard to find. There were plenty who were only flash in the pans at test level, Chris Matthews, Jo Angel, Matthew Nicholson, Brendon Julian and the like.

Murray Goodwin is cheating as he played tests for Zim, but not for us. Aaron Mullally could get a gig on the same basis.

Ryan Campell has to keep on account of Zoehrer and Gilly being ineligible

Peter Gonnella, one of the few blokes that used to bat in glasses

Wayne Andrews, remember he used a Grove bat which was pretty unique

Peter Cantrell. Queenslander who took 2 screamer catches as a sub fielder in an ashes test. Went on to play for the Netherlands
If we're going 80's, Steve Milosz, WA leggie; Peter Clough, old school workhorse came to WA via Tassie

Found it interesting that looking at the scorecards, Australia A's two leading wicket-takers for the tournament, Merv Hughes (12 wickets) and Paul Reiffel (9 wickets) didn't play for them in the two finals against Australia.

If the whole point of an A side is that it's meant to be a proving ground for or stepping stone to the first team, why not allow it to be properly used as such? If the A team is good enough to beat the first team, then maybe some of the players from the A team should get selected in the first team (eventually every one of them except Greg Rowell and Shane George did play for Australia anyway, but still).

And this guy...

Mark Harrity
One of the funniest things I've seen in any cricket ever was at a 2001 ODD d/n game at the WACA v South Australia where Harrity was spending the evening patrolling the boundary. This group of about 4 pissed guys just kept following him around waving their arms and bowing screaming "FLAANDEEERS, FLAANDERS, FLAAANDEEEERS!!!!" Just like Homer Simpson lol. It was relentless and really loud standing out with only a very small crowd there. And if that wasn't funny enough Harrity eventually actually completely lost it (just like Ned lol) turning around and coming at them towards the fence firing back with a volley of abuse with foul language.

Never ever seen a sportsman sucked in by someone like that in the crowd before or since :D

Cheeq's was captain when I was at Randwick, good guy, very good eye player. With the benefit of 20 years experience since those days, he probably had too many people blowing smoke up his backside and had some pretty big technical flaws in his game that were never touched on. He had a lot of pre ball movements that were very jinky - but when he was on - carnage. There were some seriously good players floating around grade cricket in those days that could not get a look in for NSW or were at best bit part players.

I remember sitting in on selection one night, where a guy was dropped to the 3rds after he started the season in the 1sts. He was possibly the cleanest hitter of a ball I've ever seen but his form at the time was cavernous. Within 8 months he had changed clubs to be closer to home and was playing Mercantile Mutual Cup for NSW. A young lad come up for his first grade debut after being a sensational under age bowler and came up against the clean hitter and opened the bowling, his match figures were 1-0-0-36. The Batsman's name was Kevin Geyer.
