Hi all, now the Brownlow is out of the way, time to get on to the really prestigious award that everybody wants, the Freo BF Player of the Year Award. Here's a quick summary of our top 10:
1st Place - Nat Fyfe (97 points, 20 games)
BOGs: 7
Top 3: 12
Stand-out game (most % votes): Round 6 vs Nth. Melbourne
Scored votes in 19 of 20 games played
Last Year: 1st
No surprises on our winner. Well done to Fyfe who is comfortably back to back winner of our best player award. But for some bad luck with the MRP/Tribunal, would have topped just about every individual award going around. Cemented his name as a star of the AFL last year, has backed that up with arguably an even better season this year adding a touch of consistency to an already elite level of play and brought his on field leadership to the fore too - so glad he's a Docker.
2nd Place - Aaron Sandilands (60 points, 23 games)
BOGs: 2
Top 3: 4
Stand-out game (most % votes): Round 12 vs Adelaide
Scored votes in 17 of 23 games played
Last Year: 20th
An injury free Sandi is a scary Sandi for the rest of the comp. Following a strong finals campaign last year, brought his from into 2014 and influenced games like no other player in the league can. Was declared the AA ruckman this year and rightly polled well in our voting too. His tap work in key ruck contests was as good as it's ever been and he would often work hard to make himself dangerous around the ground too. Well done 211.
3rd Place - Michael Barlow (58 points, 19 games)
BOGs: 2
Top 3: 7
Stand-out game (most % votes): Round 20 vs Geelong
Scored votes in 13 of 19 games played
Last Year: 4th
Barlow just goes about it, no fuss, no hype, just "gets it done" as Ross likes to say. That game against Geelong in Geelong was truly memorable and showed the heart of the guy, almost single-handedly willing us to a come from behind victory. Loves the club and we love him.
4th Place - David Mundy (52 points, 24 games)
BOGs: 2
Top 3: 7
Stand-out game (most % votes): Round 21 vs Hawthorn
Scored votes in 15 of 24 games played
Last Year: 2nd
Mundy had an interesting year. His very best was that top quality footy we've come to associate with Mundy, but he did have some down patches. His form in the middle part of the year was his best when he was playing ripping footy. He popped up and had a stellar game in the home game against Hawthorn too. Not as consistent as last year, but still a top player and a good year's work.
5th Place - Stephen Hill (51 points, 20 games, 1343 votes)
BOGs: 3
Top 3: 6
Stand-out game (most % votes): Round 3 vs Hawthorn
Scored votes in 12 of 20 games played
Last Year: 9th
Hill is growing into the truly special player that we all hoped he'd be. Is still picking up some tough tags from time to time, but he's maturing in his ability to deal with them and is now arguably our most damaging player with ball in hand. Has steadily improved every year with the club and that continued this year. Well done to the young man.
6th Place - Hayden Ballantyne (51points, 20 games, 1194 votes)
BOGs: 2
Top 3: 7
Stand-out game (most % votes): Round 13 vs Richmond
Scored votes in 11 of 20 games played
Last Year: 12th
Great year from Balla. It's usually tough for small forwards to poll well in these sorts of voting systems, but he managed to do just that being our most dangerous scoring threat for much of the year. His 6 goal game against Richmond at the G was a highlight of the year, but he was good throughout the season. But for some untimely suspensions and injury, might have been even higher in our voting. Well done to the little man.
7th Place - Tendai Mzungu (45 points, 23 games)
BOGs: 1
Top 3: 3
Stand-out game (most % votes): Round 22 vs Brisbane
Scored votes in 11 of 23 games played
Last Year: 6th
One of the hardest runners in the AFL, this guy works his backside off and is a bit of a jack of all trades for us at times. Occasionally a run with, attacking winger, HBF, link player - he pops up and does a bit of everything. He's durable, strong in the body and skilled enough to get any job you want done on an AFL field. Stand out game against Brisbane late in the year, but has had a fairly consistent year across the board. Great stuff Zu.
8th Place - Lachie Neale (43 points, 23 games)
BOGs: 2
Top 3: 4
Stand-out game (most % votes): Round 7 vs West Coast
Scored votes in 10 of 23 games played
Last Year: 21st
Neale is coming people, and making it into our top 10 is indication of that - keeping in mind who else runs through our midfield, to poll well in our voting is saying something. What a young weapon this guy is turning out to be - and he's no flat track bully either, often polling well in big games like the first Derby and the important Port game in Rnd 23. We talk about the 'big 3' often enough, but little Lachie is sneaking in and under and is now a valuable part of our midfield unit.
9th Place - Matthew Pavlich (42 points, 22 games)
BOGs: 0
Top 3: 5
Stand-out game (most % votes): Round 3 vs Hawthorn
Scored votes in 12 of 22 games played
Last Year: 29th
Like Sandi, benefited massively with an injury free run this year - our captain was fantastic this year. It's a sign of our maturity as a team that we can still have good years without Pav dominating, but he's still a quality footballer that when he shines, really shines. His form in the first half of the season was particularly strong with back-to-back multiple goal games against quality sides in Hawthron, Essendon and Sydney in rnds 3-6 respectively. One of the greats is still getting it done for his club - well done Pav.
10th Place - Michael Johnson (27 points, 18 games)
BOGs: 0
Top 3: 2
Stand-out game (most % votes): Round 4 vs Essendon
Scored votes in 9 of 18 games played
Last Year: 3rd
MJ had a great year last year, selected into the AA squad and all - and was on track to do really well again this year before hitting some real issues mid-way through the season. His polling early in the season was very strong and it was enough for him to get into our top 10 despite playing under-duress for the later half of the season and missing the final games altogether. He's so good at controlling the HB line and he reads the play both defensively and in setting up attacks better than just about anybody going around. Hopefully he's back fully fit and firing next year.
There you have it, our top 10 for this year according to BF voters. I'll post the complete table soon.
